Unlike Microsoft, Apple will release a "tablet" when they get it right. And in case you are confused, Microsoft and Dell and HP, etc., have not come close to getting the tablet right yet. I'm a computer systems analyst have have to deal with those pieces of **** every day.

What I would like to see is a iPhone / iTouch twice the size of the current one in exactly the same form factor. No physical keyboard. Maybe the only change I would do is for the machine to be able to fold in half with no screen on the outside. You would open it like a laptop except that both halves would be touch screens from edge to edge.

What about typing? If you were around during the Palm Pilot days there was a company (that still exists) that makes an infrared virtual keyboard that shines onto a flat surface. It can then see where your fingers are. Sure there is no feeling of keys be depressed but I found that I could type 70 words per minute using this with a Palm and the infrared virtual keyboard.

Of course this would be a 3rd party product and by default you would do like you do with the iPhone / iTouch and type on the screen itself. I would hope that it would be a full qwerty keyboard with numbers, etc.

This sounds like a Microsoft Tablet? The difference is in the software, not the hardware. Ok, it's both. Just remember that for the most part a Vega and a Porche are basically the same until you account for engineering and taste.

The idea to walk through the presentation as if we are walking in Maddy shoes was lame. Then it's topped off with statements like, "Maddy's cool iPhone" and "Maddy is now the envy of her friends." I don't even care that she messed up a few times. Who thought that trying to get the audience to connect with the an imagined person for the demonstration was a good idea? The fact remains that while I think the tech is cool, I'm not going to buy this app and ultimately don't care about this app because I'm not diabetic. If you are diabetic or know someone that is you surely don't need a fake person to relate to about the disease.

    (end rant)

Why is that? They probably just converted a typical glucose meter USb cable over to a 30-pin connector. I'm sure there will be plenty of devices with that setup, but with the 30-pin connector now open in the SDK there is no reason why it can't be more elaborate and/or stylized for the iPhone/Touch.

I agree that the presentation was silly. But on the Apple platform there is only one OS X diabetic product. Which, IMHO stinks and I'd rather use pencil and paper! (check VersionTracker for diabetic software ) Two os 9 that haven't been update in years. I've requested for years to have Life Scan/ Johnson & Johnson make a Mac app, to the reply of "there is not a large enough Macintosh user base to create an app." Well the presentation may have been silly, but the announcement of an app that could possible lead to a Mac desktop app, is as big as copy and paste for the dibetic community.

    I agree, Smule was COOL!

While I'm not really good, I blew away my relatives playing a few songs on the currently Smule. The best part was how much my wife's nephew loves Apple products. His mom works for Microsoft and he knows which one is better.

He is pissed that his mom won't let him by a Mac because he loves Garage Band and makes her very mad because he won't shut up about it after he's been to our house and created some ones using it and burns them to CD (as well as posting them on his website).

I, too, thought Apple would want to start an MVNO. Mainly so they could have the control they wanted. Considering the data traffic the iPhone needs it looks like it Apple made the better choice.

The iPhone OS probably wasn't ready for the abuses of being hands on but they may not have had enough physical models for a hands on setup or didn't have a method of securely affixing them in a way that they could be assured one wasn't stolen and given to an Arthur Slugworthian character wanting to steal Apple's secrets before the launch date.

The simplest answer seems to be that the SW was too unfinished, but that doesn't make me that it wasn't expected to be ready by June. The iPhone uses Leopard and surely points to added effort at Cupertino to launch the iPhone first and foremost, but I think Leopard would have been delayed anyhow. I think Snow Leopard will be delayed, too.

The point of that demo wasn't to get consumers excited about J&J's software (oh boy, when can I buy that!), it was to get developers thinking outside the box in terms what they could do with the iPhone.

Surely J&J didn't slap that app together in two weeks though, right (as the intro suggested: "a couple weeks ago we asked some companies to see what they could do with the new SDK")?

You know all those cars with iPod integration. Maybe next the cars can start communicating back (diagnostic information, tracking mileage on your iPod, hmm).

I agree, I hope I didn't come across as if I was trivializing the potential for this app.

As both the Mac community and iPhone OS community grows I think you'll see a lot more Mac apps coming after iPhone OS counterparts appear.

Brilliant news and the potential for the future in so many other medical fields is exciting. I just hope M$, RIM and Palm leave well alone and don't see copying yet another thing from Apple as key to their survival, medical uses are too important to be dumbed down for profit. Keep up the excellent and quality work Apple.

The problem is that this is ALL that they know how to do is copy. At least once the devices were purchased by big companies. Most big companies couldn't innovate themselves out of a wet paper bag.

Is it really necessary to use Christian language and imagery like this in a story on a new iPhone feature?

There were other companies that took Amy's plea to heart, notably Adaptive Path. You can read about the Charmr project here: http://adaptivepath.com/charmr/

I am glad to see people taking this seriously.

I'm done with AppleInsider. Is there some other website that provides timely rumors and updates about the Apple scene without the peddling to Apple stockholders, propaganda and BS journalism?

I mean seriously, the person asked for a redesigned, stylish blood glucose monitor, and somehow since the iPhone 3.0 SDK allows connecting an ugly external device with a bulky cable it's the "second coming"?!? And then there are the morons on this site who think that this is Apple innovating, because they're apparently too dense to realize people have been interfacing external devices/sensors to mobile computers (including the Newton) for over a decade (including for medical applications)? Something that a proper journalist would've researched and acknowledged?

A few of the articles on here the past week or so have been bottom of the barrel. Are there new writers, do the owners of AppleInsider have too much invested in Apple stock, or what's changed?

Oh, I don't know if there is another website, but as an Apple shareholder and consumer, I am here for exactly what you seem to consider 'BS' journalism. I love the stuff that is being 'peddled' here on AI. Eye-of-the beholder type of thing....

Some advice: (i) Chill out; (ii) Go somewhere -- anywhere -- else.

I wish Apple would open a design consultancy like Porsche.

I would love to buy other products designed by Apple but sold by their respective manufacturer.

No, instead there should be a convergence of all technology into the iPhone. It would give the haters things to complain about for years!

    iPhone missing features:

    - Integrated glucose meter/insulin injector (Palm has had this since the '80s)

    - No geiger counter

    - iPhone's Taser to low-powered (don't phone me, bro!)

I think you will find the article was about debunking the use if that 'Christian language'. I agree with separation of church and technology! If not we'd still be in the dark ages!

I'm being somewhat facetious yet there's a an element of truth in the statement "Journalism is dead" I don't aim this at AI writers but I think writing in general has devolved contentwise and was on the decline before the internet.

I didn't read it that way at all. I read it as the' Jesus' thing was said by others mocking folks like me who loved the iPhone from the start and this was debunking that and the use of the 'second coming' was rubbing that in a mildly sarcastic way now it is a proven success. As to having concerns about AAPL, I for one share those and it is totally necessary to have a relevance to that in some AI article. Sorry you don't agree and feel in necessary to leave such an excellent resource to us Mac users.

Jesus... give the woman a break. The closeups on her hands showed that she was really nervous. You'd have done better?

And if you can't see past your own parochial needs to see what a breakthrough this kind of device is going to be for a TON of people, then I just feel sorry for you.

Go back to playing your sophomoric games.
