At what point is Jaguar necessary

I joined the Apple 'world' in Sept 2001 with a 'classic' IMac 500 and have been running OS X pretty much from the start. I currently run 10.1.5 and have no real problems or complaints (what a breath of fresh air after my years on the Windows world). I am not all that demanding of my computer - mostly just e-mail, word processing and internet access. Is there any reason I need or want OS X Jaguar? I have looked at its list of features and don't see anything that will help me. Am I wrong? Will it make my computer run faster (I don't think that I can benefit from Quartz Extreme, given the video cards with the classic IMacs.

Well, until some software you use requires 10.2, I guess you don't need 10.2, but I would strongly recommend it to anybody who's running OS X just for all the improvments it brings.

However, backing up all of your files, wiping out your hard drive, and starting from scratch might not be on your list of priorities. I like to stay current, and many of the OS X changes bring improvments that are vital to my work and also make my games run faster/smoother.

I did not realize that installing 10.2 would require those steps. That makes me hesitate more.

Incidentally, my purpose is not to slag 10.2. I am sure that it offers some great new features - I am a fan of Apple, and OS X in particular. My point is just that I am not sure that the features of 10.2 - over and above those of 10.1 - are ones that are necessary for those who use computers for realtively simple purposes.

It doesn't require any of those steps... You can simply install 10.2 right over your existing install without reformating your drive.

That being said, you should ALWAYS keep backups of all of your files before doing any major OS update. Murphy's law being what it is...

The latest version of Jag is superior to all previous ones. In order to get to it you really need to use the upgrade paths provided free by Apple.

Frankly, if you're happy with 10.1.5, you might as well save your money until you want a new machine that will come with Jaguar (or later versions). Don't feel compelled to buy the OS if you're hapy with your situation.

Jaguar has been a great experience for me, much better than even 10.1, but to each his own.

I think getting Jaguar's a good idea unless you don't have the money. It should increase the speed on your iMac at least a little.

I am starting to get sick you and everyone else saying that the reason why you aren't upgrading to Jag is because they don't have money. How do you know how much money someone has, there are reasons you know. Geesh!

I don't see why I need Jag, 10.1.5 does everything I want it do. I don't need all of those apps. And just for you EmAn, yes I can afford to buy jag. <img src="graemlins/oyvey.gif" border="0" alt="[No]" />

After just a day, I have to say OS X 10.2.3 is the best version of OS X yet. I used DP3, DP4, Public Beta, and OS X 10.0 through 10.2.3.

With Jag, I finally started encouraging the non-powerusers I know (mom, sister, friends) to make the switch. It's faster, although not double speed or anything like that. It is more stable for me than any previous version.

The little features are starting to build and make the machine just more useful. I don't use any iApps, except I've just started to tinker with iCal/iSync. It's the other little pieces that add up.

That said, make sure your old software is upgradeable. I would also encourage any 500 MHZ G3 users out there to chime in and give us your opinion. I'm now using an LCD iMac so the experience on a G3 Mac will be less than it is for me. Still, I can only encourage users to switch to Jag.

I'd go for it, seeing the improvements on my iBook. Its much more optimized, and a cleaner interface overall. Also, the new Mail.app will help you out, and Sherlock 3 for searching.

First of all, you need to stop being such an ass about things. And I love how you just signed off of aim the way you did, real mature.

and i'll say it to you again, all i meant by it is that i think it's a good invesment, nothing more. if you don't like what i say then ignore my posts.

Edit: OK, Mac Man, I guess you can just forget about what I said since we've worked things out

My friend just upgraded to Jaguar, it runs faster, smoother, and it solved ALL his networking problems.

I agree that 10.2 is a vast improvement over 10.1.x. I would highly recommend doing a fresh install though. I tried on two different machines to do the upgrade but both had problems with random shutdowns. Finally, I blasted the hard drives and started over. I haven't looked back since.

Yes, if you have the money handy, you really should go for the upgrade. There are oodles of fixed bugs (major and minor), new features, brand new technologies (such as rendezvous), and optimizations across the board. Even if your graphics card is not supported for Quartz Extreme, there are numerous other optimizations that will make the system faster in other areas.

The *only* upgrade problems I remember seeing were from users who either didn't install it properly, installed over one of the pre-release developer builds, had some kinds of hacks or themes installed, or were tooling around with fink and xfree86. None of these are common situations.

Seriously, why are people like you (Mac Man) so hesitant to make the upgrade? If the $130 is not an issue, then what is?

If your computing needs are pretty light here is how I'd try to evaluate it.

-If you are using Mail in OS X then upgrading to Jag is very attractive. Mail has gotten several bug fixes and most importantly it has the new spam manager (Junk filter). This works extremely well. If you are besieged by spam this really worth looking at.

-The new Address Book is very nice. It works well with Mail enhancing your email productivity.

-General speed of moving windows, resizing and such is substantially improved.

-Stability of the system is improved. This is hard to evaluate. In your case you might not encounter any of the trouble areas so you might not see a change. OS X 10.1.5 is probably already quite stable for you.

-Against this you have to balance the cost of upgrading. This is roughly $100. List price is $129 but I think you can find discounted versions available. If you want to wait a while (six months?) you could probably skip ahead to OS X 10.3 for the same price (just speculation on my part).

MacMall has Jaguar on sale for $73 bucks after rebate. Seems like a good time to fork over the money if anyone hasn't done so already.
