I kind of feel like the success of the iPod is kind of the same as the success of Google. The name has just become synonymous with what they do. When someone tells you to search for something, what do they say? "Google this" or "Google that." Even if another search engine comes along that's better, Google's popularity will still drive it's success.
Same with the iPod. At Christmas, my mom said she wanted to go to best buy to "look at ipods" for my little brother. She called them all ipods. She's not alone. I've heard people do this all the time. iPod has become the name of all mp3 players for a lot of people lol.
So I'm not bashing the quality of the iPod or Google searches, it's just something odd that happens that I've noticed, and something that adds to the continued success of a dominant product.
edit:
Just thought of another one: Frisbee. The toy is called a flying disc, but what does everyone call it? A Frisbee. Frisbee is a product name. See where I'm going with this? Am I making sense?
Abster2core is either stupid, stubborn , ignorant or all of the above. How many times have I posted this link? This current shuffle is the worst iPod ever made. See this link by the premier iPod review site.
I have avoided looking at Sansa, since there is no claim of OS X compatibility?

Nope, not correct on either point. I seriously looked at a Creative Zen when I bought a video player (this is before the iPhone came out) but decided against it because it required WMP for managing media (FWIW, I bought an Archos 704, and it's great). WMP isn't just the most pathetic excuse for a GUI ever, it's also horribly insecure and supports embedded IE, and I'd never use it.
The Sansa players can mount as a Windows Media client, or can be mounted in hard drive mode. I've never plugged my Clip into a Windows machine, it's always been managed by my Mac; create folders for your music and drag and drop files from the Finder. (Again, I still prefer using iTunes)
The only thing I can think of that would require a Windows client would be Audible and Rhapsody support.
"slavishly following the masses" is dumb for anyone to say about the reasoning behind consumer purchases. People don't slavishly follow the masses when they buy Windows, it's just the only other real option besides OS X (which apple won't let system builders use.)
I disagree. By far the vast majority of people I know buy Windows machines because that's what they know (a few do because of price and don't understand the better experience they receive for their money). Those who have tried the alternatives usually switch.

I knew a guy like techstud a long time ago. If I remarked that the sky was blue he would argue that it was not. If I said I liked to eat strawberries he would come up with reasons I should stay away from strawberries altogether. If I offered an opinion on what flowers smelled the best he would ridicule people who went around smelling flowers. He was a control freak who demanded everyone tow his line. People like that are just phalluses walking around pretending to be human beings. They are to be ignored and pitied.

And you support that based on one review that stated, "It’s the lowest-rated iPod we’ve ever reviewed”

He also ignores the positive comments iLounge stated. Like how it sounds better than the previous Shuffle, which should be a plus to him considered how much he complained about the 2G Shuffle despite apparently buying another.

As the AH always does.
Love his comments on the iPhone. Doesn't have one, says he never will.
Not that the screen and playlist functionality (never-mind the additional 2GB) isn't worth it but the 4GB clip is $80. You need to compare the 1GB Clip @ $40 or the 2GB Clip @ $60.
I was comparing the actual price someone would pay for these. Amazon sells the 4GB clip for $51, and the 1GB 2G shuffle for $45.

I know osx, I know Windows, and I know that Apple computers cost too much for people like my friends Matt and Lisa. They recently bought a gateway for 400 bucks from best buy. I helped them set it up, load up mcafee and spybot, and they couldn't be happier. For another 100 bucks or so they can get a video card and start buying games. So let me ask you, were they slavishly following the masses, or making the most practical purchase decision based on what they need/could afford?
On the other hand, I have geek friends who have macs and pcs and actually prefer Windows over osx. Are they following the masses, or making an informed decision based on their own personal preference?
Finally, there's people like me, who build their own systems. I enjoy ubuntu, but Windows is my only main option for an OS that takes full advantage of my hardware. If Apple sold osx to people like me, I'd partition my drive and use it. They don't, so I can't. Am I following the masses, or using what I'm forced to use because one company doesn't accommodate my needs while another one does?
I think you'd be surprised at how often someone chooses a Windows PC for reasons other than "everyone else did."

Interesting. Like you I too am forced to use a Mac because it is the one company that accommodates my needs while no other does.

I said nothing about his being right or wrong. I was making a comment about his persistent negativity and relentless aggressiveness.
As to the Cube, I must be the only one I know who thought it was one of Apple's finest products. Ever.
The Cube was a bit too far ahead of its time. It turned into the Mini, and people were ready for it.
BS as usual. We have gone through this before. Again, show us the proof. You couldn't do it before and I defy you to this time.

Since the shuffle sells like hotcakes, you apparently have a different definition of "compelling" than the majority of buyers.
The fact that an Apple product is not compelling to you is not a "chink in their armor."
You missed the part where I said "remove the blinders".
