A flat panel iMac is not "big." Why? Because flat panel peecee's have been available for awhile.
The G4 breaking the gigahertz barrier is certaintly news but not "big" news.
To me, "big" MWSF news is a brand new butt kicking G5 computer 3X as powerful as any peecee available today, unveiled after the announcements of the G4 flat panel iMacs and speed bumped powerbooks and iBooks.
Here's the corrected link (Apologies to MacAgent for reposting your link, but this seemed easier than waiting for you come back to this thread and notice that it didn't work...).
I don't need a new product to consider the show "big." Significant upgrades to existing product lines is just fine. That means new iMacs, new PowerMacs, and so on. Man, I would just go nuts if they suprised me with a higher resolution screen on the TiBook. Absolutely nuts.
I'm telling you. Look at how they are hyping this thing! It's like no other MacWorld before. Having those words on the front page of their web site? Has that ever happened before? Something's up at 1 Infinite Loop!
While that AMD idea is not something I'd support, your thinking is in line with what I'm saying here: we might be completely suprised on January 7. As TigerWoods said, this has never happened before, but Apple has (obviously) released some amazing products in the past.
So is this Apple just caving to the media pressure that demands more and more hype, or is it that we are about ot have our minds blown?
So is this Apple just caving to the media pressure that demands more and more hype,
I posted this in the other thread about the hype, but I think that Apple has learned not to drum up too much if they can't back it up, given the post MWNY reaction and the subsequent "No New Hardware" anti-hype annoucement. I think the question is 'Does Apple consider just having a new iMac enough to justify the hype.'
Apple really screwed up the last Macworld and Steve knows it. I'm sure he went into overdrive pushing everyone to create some awesome things to show. Apple needs some major announcements and bragging rights very badly. Whether it is one huge and amazing announcement with other small ones, or lots of significant ones... Apple needs it, and we are going to get it. This is it people...
How about AMD being contracted to fab the G5 processors?
If this is unsubstantiated hype, they will seriously alienate a lot of people. I think even Steve Jobs felt the disappointment after MWNY and knows that they need to do something to avoid 2 of those in a row.
If memory serves me, a lot of the disappointment came from people dreaming up a bunch of unrealistic scenarios that Apple couldn't (and never said they could) deliver on.
There's the danger with all of the rumor hype.
Also, something to keep in mind is, who is more innovative in the industry? Certainly not any of those Windoze hardware or software companies.
Apple *must* have something special to show, they know the disappointment after MWNY, they know alot of us are itching for G5's and G4 LCD imacs, I cant believe they would deliberatly say something like this if they didn't have both available. Its beyond comprehension that they would add fuel to the fire if they couldn't deliver. Not to mention all the stockbroker/layer wienies that would be after their blood if they bummed this time. I tell you G5's and LCD imacs are coming, but yesterday I wouldn't have thought so
I think what with the tons of g5 speculation around THESE boards, and other boards and webpages and basically EVERYWHERE, apple knows we are more than just itching for g5s but more of desperatly anticipating them(except for the skeptics and realists
why would apple go through the trouble first to announce something "revolutionary" was coming at MWSF, then to say it would be big, even by their standards, of course no one really knows their standards cause MWs in the past never hold a recurring theme of bigness, and the biggest thing to come out of apple in 3 years was the iMac, if thats what they are refering to then this is huge, I'd say they have a trump card up their sleeves, I have a feeling I personally WON"T be dissappointed,
Its almost as if steve-o is REALLY excited(genuine excitment) and WANTs to tell us now, but can't so instead he's throwing us these bones,to simaltaneusly increase the hype factor, and to indirectly tell us "your speculations are on the nose" but thats the nice guy corporate facade that so many people believe about apple, when in truth they can be just as ruthless as any other company.
or its all just a big fake hype pump that apple is fueling, and we will see marginally faster g4s and an LCD iMacs that really aren't that special
This went up because Apple just got confirmation that Moto can deliver enough G5s to announce new G5 Powermacs...probably 1.2-1.6 GHz.
I bet we see the Apollo G4 in the iMac as well, speeds of 733, 867, 1000 MHz. And of course, a new LCD display form factor for the iMac.
This IS going to be huge, and Apple just said so.
Let me put it this way....if Apple wasn't going to announce Powermac G5s at MWSF, then wouldn't they want to lower expectations? Wouldn't they want the rumors to STOP, so people don't hold off buying powermacs based on some false rumors?
Instead of ending the rumors with an announcement, Apple remained silent. Moto announced that the G4 has plenty of life left in it...which means nothing about the G5 powermac. It could mean that iMacs get G4s, or even that there will be a consumer tower that uses a G4, or the cube will be ressurected with a G4. In any event, the G5 rumors kept mounting, and have even been reported on major news sites like CNN.
Clearly, there is already enough hype for MWSF, if it were a typical expo. And now, a week before the expo, with Powermac G5 rumors swarming around the internet, Apple drops this bomb on us about MWSF being BIG, even by Apple standards. In other words, Apple usually speedbumps a few lines, and introduces ONE new product revision.
So instead of putting out the blazing G5 rumors, Apple threw gasoline on the fire.
Exactly what I've been thinking, I'm stoked about all this, cuz even if new g5s aren't released at 1.2-1.6 ghz at least there definatly WILL be buff new iMacs, and though I'm wanting a tower, a really buff new iMac may be enough for me
If there is one thing that Apple didnt want to do was to have anyone say that the G4 was eol. Would you put a G4 in an iMac and say, oh geez, this is really yesterdays technology and has no real life left.
exactly, JYD. if you plan to have bad news, you do NOT blab to every press network to be at the keynote on jan. 7th. i think, though, apple's concept of "big" may be optimistically skewed (i mean, everyone on these boards has pretty active imaginations, so just putting out teasers can do a lot of damage). heck, apple even thought blue dalmatian and flower power were good ideas.
so, all in all, apple believes it has the ace up its sleeve (or aces) -- only a week left.

No more dependence on Motorola for chip fabrication, and fast chips now!!!
Not 64 bit, but seriously closing the Mhz gap.
So is this Apple just caving to the media pressure that demands more and more hype, or is it that we are about ot have our minds blown?
