Frankly, I think the use of the term iPad was a last second decision and Steve was thumbing his nose at all the vendors at CES using the word slate for their crummy product introductions.
Perhaps you should learn something about intellectuality property law before you post.
If Fujitsu has a registered trademark, Apple took a calculated risk in using the name knowing it could incur legal cost. Further, Apple's cost for a Trademark violation will be minimal. It likely will only be ordered to not use the name.
Finally, I was kidding about the losing part, sort of. The name is lame.

The iPhone name was worth fighting for, iPad, not so much, lol!
Btw, Apple should just go ahead and name it's tablet the iBook. Even though it doesn't fold like a book, it still has a virtual bookstore as one of it's most important features.
Apple will win out somehow, and they should. Who ever heard of the other iPads? I much prefer iPad to iSlate. It will cause some amusing confusion though. Yesterday Jobs said, "That's the hardware for the iPod."
A way out for Apple who obviously screwed up HUGE with the iPad name.
TurboSlate is way cooler.... who here wants to kick ass on a TurboSlate 3000?
Woot.... i sure do.
I don't want to carry a pad in my man-bag... i want to rock a TurboSlate in my backpack.
Seriously, I think Apple is funding the Fujitsu lawsuit to get out of this major brand/marketing blunder.
Watching the keynote, you could tell everyone who came on stage wanted to puke every time they said iPad. I think Steve wanted it and everyone was noooooooooooo. But Steve gets what Steve wants.
I'd agree, but using that name to sell it to consumers may have people thinking that's it's just an ebook reader. Also, there was already an Apple iBook.
That's sort of the point isn't it? Apple already owns the iBook name. It has been retired for many years. Now they can release it as the new iBook, a natural evolution of the original small carry around computer. The orginal iBook wasn't just an eBook reader either.

1. "iBook" would be so much better. "Newton" being my favourite.
on a side note:
2. iBookstore does not sound as sexy as the "app" store. Just call it "book"store, it is easier to pronounce than "ibooks" store (notice the hissing of the s'es).
The problem with calling it iBookstore is that you just shot yourself in the foot. They should have called it the Printstore. That way, they can sell everything that's in print such as magazines, comic books, newspapers. Now, everyone will have to create their own app which will suck as it takes onscreen real estate.
So to reiterate, call the device iBook and called the new store Printstore.
Books fold, we've been through this. The MacBook hardware physically folds, that's why the nomenclature "book" makes sense.
The original iBook had nothing to do with books either. It was just called that because it's something small that you can carry around with lots of information on it. This new tablet would be a natural evolution of the iBook. It marks the next generation of their smallest notebook.
Personally, I was hoping that the moved away from the iThing structure. It's played out. If they wanted to keep the "I" around then a name like Apple info would have been better.
actually I'll ait until they have an HDMI output and I can stream Netflix on it.
and what about making a VoIP call? then again - not as conventient as an iPhone to toss in your pocket and go - unless maybe you wear cargo pants all the time.
Why not prefix every product with a? Such as aPod and aPhone and aTV - but then I suppose if you told someone "I just got aTV" they would mistake that for "I just got a TV"
Apple TV sounds okay - but Apple Pod, Apple Pad, doesn't quite work.
Or maybe they should go with mePad, and mePhone the way they changed .mac to .me
Or maybe they should go the way of many auto makers lately and instead of an Apple MacBook Pro and an Apple iPad they could have the Apple RL and the Apple GT and GTS or the Apple 5 and Apple 5L - and then you would need a brochure to figure out what is what.
Isn't it obvious than an "IPAD" released in 2002 might have been inspired by the name of the iPod, or by the iMac and all the subsequent i-stuff since 1998? Apple shouldn't have to fight with people who jump on its bandwagon and then claim to own the wagon.
Apple shouldn't have the right to stick a letter in front of a generic word and then claim to own it..
Remember "e" How abut "x"? Apple was just copying an existing meme of putting a lower case letter first in order to appear hip. It was nothing new.
Everyone hated the iPod name when it was announced.
Everyone hated the MacBook name when it was announced.
Everyone hates the iPad name when it was announced.
Maybe, the word pad will finally get some respect? Just don't spill any blue liquid on it!
wut?
I remember the world cheering at the iPod name. Everyone wanted a pod. Pod is a cool name, cutting edge, futuristic... branding companies took note of it and thus the i everything revolution really took off.
Pad is worse then horrible.
It's such a bad name that I'm almost positive Apple will use the Fujitsu lawsuit to battle Steve over the name.
Watch the keynote again... you can see all the other speakers have a moment of horror and embarrassment when they say iPad. One of them even calls it a pod at one point. (i'll have to watch it again to figure out who).
I'm almost positive that Apple fought Steve over this name, and won't be surprised if the product is released as the iSlate or Newton, or iLike, or something that doesn't give half the population visions of bloody hygiene products being thrown in the garbage,... and the other half of the population visions of something they just don't want to think about or go near at all.
Apple is insanely arrogant and stupid to think that they can change the world's psyche of the term pad. Nobody will call this product by it's given name.
It is literally begging for the product to fail with their target consumer audience.
As noted by the big Boooooo's at the keynote when the name dropped into place. When was the last time you heard booing at an Apple keynote?

That was Steve Jobs freudian slip referring to it as an iPod...
Note to Apple:
"Change your tablet name. Not that big of a deal.
Me
Sent from my iPad"
Remember that? It's what Steve said to an app developer when told to dump Pod from his app name so instead of "iPodRip" it is now, based on the advice from Steve Jobs, called the "iRip"!

I hope Apple loses, as the name stinks.
No I like iPad way better the iSlate!
Look iPod, iPod Classic, iPod Nano, iPod Shuffle, iPod Touch and now the iPad! Dude it fits!
Thatsyour argument. So I could have a product called iMasturabte and Apple could just
5 years down the line release a shit product and say I stole the name? that they can take anything AT ALL once it has an "i" before it!
Apple is a shit company who strong arm people to get what they want. Having said that.
Love the iphone and macbooks (have one of each).
In any case anyone who puts an "i" before their product is a NOB!

...I am really hoping that the iPad name gets blocked for them like the iTV name got blocked (which later became Apple TV.)
There you go, a precedent for renaming the iPad the Apple Tablet.
Hmm, that does sound a bit feminine actually.
I liked the iSlate name better anyway. I say dump the iPad name if it gets too sticky.
I agree, iPad, though I see the meaning is so ummmm, hygienic. iSlate is much better.
Same.
YAY!!!!!

I wonder how well the Fujitsu iPad has been selling?
And how well it continues to sell today with an eight year head-start?
I bet more than the Apple iPad since it isn't for sale. How is your comment relevant that they own the name?
