High-margin accessory makers have high hopes for Apple's iPad

Is kind of interesting when you look at the higher end model of the iPad at 829.00 then if you have to buy the case at 70.00 and a BT keyboard at 70.00 that would total 969.00. Which is 30.00 less than getting 999.00 worth of chocolate bars.

You're absolutely right. Had it been pretty much anyone else making that comment I would have concluded my post differently. He has toned down the anti-Apple rhetoric a good deal so I recant my previous comments and will try to be more open to his next post.

Apple has a "Made for iPod" licensing program. This gets you the ability to put that logo on your product but Apple does not want a piece of your pie in the process. Since some companies seem to only make accessories and no other platform is as consistent to allow for longterm accessory development it does seem to be a gold mind for them and Apple.
I'm not sure about the intricacies of what you can and can't do, but it appears Apple gets 10% of the wholesale price and you can only makes the female connector, not the male. The latter I assume because my Mophie Juice Pack Air has a mini-USB with included cable when it would have been nicer to just have another 30-pin connector on it as it will sync and charge through the Juice Pack.

skater, here's a different scenario. (and as your full post pointed out, some people might want this, some want that, different strokes...)

I'm using a 13" MBP. It goes with me almost everywhere, but at a weight cost i sometimes regret. Once I get an iPad, the iPad will go on the overnight trips, the trip to a friend's house, the 3-4 day trips. Everything I do under those circumstances on my MBP, I'll be able to do on the iPad, too. Because i'll no longer need to worry about the MBP weight on an almost daily basis, I'll be able to upgrade to a 15" MBP. When I'm at home, using my laptop as a desktop computer, the 15" MBP will offer benefits including the much larger screen and a few other niceties. I'll only move the new, bigger (nicer-to-use) MBP back and forth when i move between my summer and winter homes or on infrequent road trips where i know i'm going to be doing intensive photo editing or word processing, if it's a major article that's due.

So I have much greater mobility on trips, with arguably no loss (with a keyboard) in functionality. It could even be argued I have greater functionality, because i'll have the added usefulness of the many iApps that are and will be available on the iPad but not on the MBP.

Plus I'll have a household tool I think i'm going to use a lot around the house-- sitting on the couch, in bed, on the patio. There ARE times I choose not to move the MBP with me (how many times an evening do you get up from the tv or from reading to go to the computer to look something up, or make a note or add a calendar item? It's at least several times an evening for me. And yes, I could do those things on my iPhone, but let's face it, not as easily or elegantly). I actually think i'll start throwing the iPad in the car wherever i go: I might not use it on most of those errands and short trips around town, but when I'm moved to stop at a McDs or Starbucks to browse something for a while, or when I want to check prices before going to a store, it'll be with me, when the MBP undoubtedly wouldn't be. I think I'll become dependent upon it.

Certainly, many people won't want to spend to have an iPhone, an iPad, and a computer. Those people won't buy the iPad. But I think millions of people, not necessarily the type who populate these forums, will find the iPad an extremely desirable electronic device for home and travel, in some instances in place of a MB or MBP, in other instances as a complement to a fixed iMac or Mac Pro.

    Just mho.

Sure - the point being that the user experience can and will be a lot better on the iPad for many tasks due to the nature of the apps. As an example out of the blue - Flixter - whats on when where you happen to be, etc etc. (Look and you shall find)

I was also talking about members who feel like they need to add a keyboard if thats the case and you need to carry around an iPad, case and BT keyboard how is that easier?

Its not easier but you got to broaden your perspective. You go on a business trip and you bring a keyboard because you anticipate inputting a lot of text. It doesn't mean you always will bring a keyboard. Just another option.

Maybe an iPad is perfect for you, I didn't say it wasn't in fact I was asking you why you felt the iPad would suit you better. My needs and your needs could very well be different which is why I ask you the question.

And I repeat - there are tons of uses at which the iPad will be better because of the 'user experience'. MANY of these uses have been thrown about in here for weeks. Some of those will apply to me. I have no doubt there will be more than one iPad in my house by the end of the year. The iPad is not a computer and should not be thought of as such. A laptop is and serves different functions many of which overlap.

All this "I know you are but what am I" stuff has all the subtle dynamics of a kindergarten at recess. Just stop. Don't respond. Don't even react in asides in another post. This is easy stuff if you have the skin for it. The rest is easy.

Also, $30 less than a full featured MacBook that does so much more! But I am sure some will fall for that one and realize later they should have bought a new MacBook instead.

In which case, they can turn around and sell it on eBay, and recoup a portion of what they paid for it. Or, if it turns out to be a blockbuster in short supply -- which is certainly not improbable -- more than what they paid for it.

    What's the big deal?

The iPad will fit very nicely into a standard backpack or standard size notepad wrap. A beautiful leather wrap for the iPad would be a great accessory. Treat it nice, manufacturers!

There are many, Mac and Windows users, who want an iPad. I expect Apple to sell 6 million this year and much more next year.

Wow. Do you really believe the stuff you write??? The iPad could very well be the next G4 Cube. An overpriced dud in which other Apple products do so much more. 6 million in a year? You live in a dreamworld.

The big difference between the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad is portability. The iPad is NOT portable like the iPhone/iPod Touch. You can take the iPhone/iPod Touch anywhere in your pocket, but you have lug around an iPad. It may be light, but it is not small.

It has already been pointed out that the high end iPad with accessories is $30 less than a full-featured MacBook that does far more than the iPad. Only an idiot would buy an iPad over a MacBook when there is a $30 difference (A MacBook refurb would be even less). That was the Cube's failure. The Power Mac G4 was faster, did far more, and in that case, cost $300 less. That was a no-brainer...the Power Mac G4 demolished the Cube in sales.

Do you take a backpack or notebook to work everyday? I don't. However, I do take my iPhone.

With the iPhone having a dozen different types of connections from a dozen different companies, you can bet accessory makers will get a good boost once iPad goes on sale.

As I see it, the iPad will fit into a wide swath of needs and markets, so talk about "work" as if it represented the only market may be premature. However, I occasionally take a backpack, occasionally a notebook, occasionally nothing. I foresee carrying an iPad occasionally.

I am not the only one saying that. Most analysts predict four millions.

Doesn't matter. It doesn't take a genius to notice that the iPad is not intended to be carried in your pocket. However, it is smaller than a Letter size paper, thinner than a portfolio, and as light as most books making it better alternative than carrying a laptop and/or books for many people. The iPad is not meant to replace your iPhone nor you laptop/computer.

It is more than a $30 and for most people the $499 is adequate and %50 less than a MB.
