to see if these other companies can get enough production up and enough devices into the market given the challenges that Apple had getting their supplies to market as well.

With all the production issues that the various sources have reported - freighting them further with more demand for different devices will be a bit of a problem?

It must gall them to have to do this. Whether it sells in great volume or not, the reality is Apple is forcing them into it.

They just can't sit back and let Apple take total control of a mobile market that they were supposed to excel in.

This mobile pad market is going to be huge. Something is better than nothing is guess.

If it were priced $150 to $200 less then it would have a chance to do well.

For 150 or 200 less they would probably have to give it an inferior screen, less battery life, etc.

Interested to see if they actually managed to convince carriers of free coupling with a BB phone. You can bet Apple would do it if AT&T let them. That is really the only thing that may attract some people to it... don't see it really putting a dent in the iPad though.

No, it doesn't at all. What relation would and investment in Blackberrys have to tablets? Their only advantage is BES, and that would be basically irrelevant in a tablet.

I think this is good. The more viable platforms we have, the better.

    1) How is it so easy? You didn?t explain why a company whose business model is similar to Apple?s (meaning, the produce the OS to go with the HW), yet has a weak app store, lacks the integration and technological know how of Apple, and deep pockets and brand recognition of Apple is going to make it ?easy for rim to beat apple?. An explanation would be nice.

    2) I?m sure Apple will eventually fall from being the most valuable tech company on the planet and will no longer make the products that all others are compared to within a set category, but that time doesn?t look to be within sight nor ?easily? achievable, especially for a company like RiM.

    3) If anyone will ?beat? Apple in any way on tablets I?d say that it will likely be Android OS, and that will be across all devices running that OS, not from all devices per each manufacturer or their revenue or profit, things companies and investors actually care about.

Unfortunately, they should have been investing in this idea 3-5 years ago. Scrambling to do it now when Apple is already seeing a huge swath of enterprise groups moving to the iPhone and iPad it's just a matter of time when they finally move a portion to Macs.

One of the most important entry barriers -- and one of the least talked-about -- that Apple has created for new entrants is its ability to combine perception of quality with high profit margins. They have hardware profit margins that competitors would kill for but cannot match, and yet manage to do this with (generally) high-quality components, esp. the ones that are visible and more expensive.

Competitors can't match Apple's prices since they cannot match its product differentiation, so they are left with only one choice in their quest to match Apple's margins: offer lower quality to offset the required lower prices.

Some might ask: why should RIM bother with margins? I can bet you that financial markets, and as a result their CEO and Board, will look at any new product intro through the lens of Apple's profit margins; anything less would be internally viewed as a second-class product, and be punished by the financial market (as Nokia and its CEO discovered to their peril).

Bottom line: Companies like RIM are trapped on both the cost end (inferior quality) and the price end (lack of product differentiation). The only way forward for them is to create a product category that Apple has not yet taken on, instead of these feeble me-too attempts.

It probably WILL crash and burn, but there is a chance that Blackberry really catches on with the corporate types. If they can replace laptops with ARM powered, super long battery life tablets that can run e-mail and Citrix, it would be a huge hit, IMO.

Also, RIM's experience with corporate security would give it the credentials needed to really break into corporate use, something that Apple has lagged in doing (Apple has been picking up the pace in this regard).

I know that many corporations have at least allowed their employees to use iPhones. Still, security is an issue. At many major law firms that take security more seriously than other organizations, iPhones are still shut out.

Why? (Tablets are computers, not phones.)

Why? iPhones are as secure as Blackberrys. They're also not subject to gatekeeper failure.

How about the Graspberry? ( get it? )

or the Juice ( the result of touching a blackberry )

I'm joking of course, but do you realize that real marketing people sit around and have conversations like this all day long?
