I first saw it and thought, "yuck that is one ugly imac." But since I've looked at it a third or fourth time its already growing on me. And if you dislike the base, what would you want to see there? I little square thingy? I think it is much more impressive as a half sphere. Also the 26.4 cm diameter is roughly around 10 inches and only about5 inches high is absolutely amazing that they could fit all the insides in. And another thing if the dimensions were in metric, quite possibly or maybe bout 50/50 the price was in Canadian, (what say you Canadian macsters?) If this is true I figured out that *gasp* the high end's price would be about 1299 US! We can only hope but I doubt this

Like others, I stopped for a second and said whaaa??

But it wouldn't be a cool design if it wasn't a little shocking.

It sorta looks like a futuristic lamp. But retro at the same time. Retro and futuristic? I think it's because it reminds me of the way the future was always portrayed back in the 1950s.

    About that $1800 high-end price:

Try to find a PC with a flat screen and DVD-R. I did it at Dell, the price king, and it came out to $1700 at minimum.

Also, remember what you currently have to pay for a flat screen and SuperDrive from Apple. Over $3000.

I can tell you that it will win design awards. The design is spectacular. A person may or may not like it as a computer, but the design is (dare I say it?) elegant. Sophisticated. Futuristic. Revolutionary.

Just because some people have no eye for aesthetics....well, I can't help that.

Its like a picture frame floating in the air, when extended forward all you will see is the screen floating in the air!! It will fit in with any home and takes a step forward to the future when we wont think of a computer box in the corner. I cant wait to see what new goodies will orbit this hub! If only the screen detached and the mouse and keyboard were wireless, hey maby they are, aaaaaaa time for bed, leave some surprises for tomorrow

sawtooth, that's exactly right. that's the brief that steve gave about making the computer look like a nice piece of furniture rather than an embarrassment that you stick in the corner and try to minimize. this is his approach from what i heard about the briefing of the ad team when they first got the account.

Anyone else think the screen looks detachable?

Also, I think it'll need a longer 'arm' in case someone wants the unit on a shelf while the monitor floats in front.

I like it. It does what it is supposed to do, or rather it doesn't do what so many other computers can't do: Be un-intimidating.

This thing looks almost natural and organic. And sure, it does look a little like someone could have done a mock-up of it in photoshop. Ives did a sketch of it the day after he and Jobs took the walk through the garden. But, it took them TWO years to get it all in there. Making a mockup is one thing. Making the actual computer is something else altogether.

You'll never see a PC that beautiful. Sure you may find one with a nice blend of black and silver plastic - supposedly "futuristic", but not one that looks like this.

    whoa..

i still hate you jerks for spoiling it for me (WHY DID I MAKE APPLEINSIDER MY START PAGE!?!?!?!?!?!)

but seriously... when i first saw it, i thought it was much less huggable (and loveable) than the original iMac.

That said, immediately, I saw it fitting onto my crammped desk.... and suddenly I wanted one.

It's as simple as that, I want one.

    now.

    on my desk

    I will

    throw

    away

    anything

    to accomodate

    the 1/2 cantelope

    of apple

    goodness

There was an internet appliance for email that looked something like this... but the specifics are failing me.

I'm overall dissapointed. Innovative form factor, but no technological innovation. THIS is the "innovation" to take us out of the slump? Real mistake.

The prices quoted in the article are in U.S. dollars.

The story almost certainly was not given to TIME Canada. TIME Canada is a "split-run" publication which combines Canadian content with that from its U.S and international counterparts.

Besides, the prices would be too low for Apple it they were in Canadian dollars...

    Cheers,

    Mark.

Sawtooth: exactly! It is furniture. it isn't to be hidden in a den, in a corner or behind some desk with doors. It sits on the kitchen counter, on the side table, etc. I still think it looks like Jetsons furniture even more than the original.

I can't believe that this is what they've come up with! That thing does not appeal to me at all. That whole LCD on the arm thing just does not seem the least bit forward thinking.

Disinformation. I won't believe it until I see what Steve announces tomorrow. Hoping against hope.

Unfortunately, I'm gonna say it's probably featuring American prices.

Because the 15in flat panel display now is CAN$929. That leaves less than CAN$400, or US$250 for a G4, combo drive, etc.

--lol!! there is a guy on BBC News24 talking crap about what Apple will release tomorrow, coupled with some horrible stock footage of a guy with a dodgy 90s hair-cut using an old preforma, ohhh lovely zoom to the rainbow logo on the front of this cream cigarette stained performa!!LOL we have come a long way.--

Im really warming to this imac, starting to see it animate and hop around cartoon like. Any one in Europe will have seen the SKY Digital adds where the little cute minidishes hop round the screen.

Actually I cant believe all the stuff's inside that.

    HARD DRIVE

    GRAPHICS

    MB + G4

    SUPERDRIVE

I bet the HD & SUPERDRIVE take up about half the room, then you have the G4's mammoth Heatsink,

I HOPE THAT THE BASE ISN'T A RELAY FROM ANOTHER UNIT

Just for some perspective, I built a current system similar to the probable specs of the top of the line new iMac (867G4/256/60 GB/15" display/SuperDrive/GeForce2MX)

    Price: $3,198

Say what you might, but this is quite a price cut for Apple...
