I really can't say I like it. Was expecting something more "futuristic" or slick. This looks like Ikea furniture....I just hope it grows on me!!

Unbelievable. I should never have checked AI or any of the Mac sites for that matter, until the keynote. It's only 5 hours away, why couldn't I have waited? Oh well. I needed something to do at work this morning, and browsing AI had to be the first site I went to.

Any way, that new iMac is amazing if what we know is true!

    G4s across the line? Amazing! Looks like the consumer machines are finally growing up. &lt;sniff&gt;

A superdrive in the iMac? How could it happen? Is it slot loading or do we have the first ever 'tray loading' iMac where the drive does more than pop out at you when you push the button?

So if the iMac is going G4, the Power Mac line has to be getting a big update. If it didn't, the iMac would actually steal sales from the Power Mac line (that hasn't happened since the original! )

so i'll add my opinion too... first, i found it weird, then i started to like it.... and now, about 4 hrs later, i love it!!!

right now I've got a Cube and a 15" flat panel screen. I bought it because I wanted something

    a) with a G4

    b) with a small footprint

And this was my only choice. Now I see that I can have the same things with a faster processor and a superdrive. Dang. I'll never be able to sell my cube...

    Gimme a break already.

This machine sucks, plain and simple. It looks like something right out of IKEA (the new bedside lamp Kalkulatør or so), not like Apple.

Ives has moved constantly away from the bold designs (the smurf and the original iMac) towards boxy objects much like Dell & co with some finishing applied and in white instead of beige.

Now this looks apologetic, it tries to be small and tries to hide instead of the "Wham, here I am"-attitude of the first iMac. Bathroom design, anyone?

With an entry price of $1300, this will do lots of good to Apples marketshare, I am sure. So there is hope that a CRT-model will stay.

I think that the idea *is* for the iMac2 to steal sales from the pro line. I do believe Apple will update its Pro line but if it goes too far it will cut into sales of the iMac. For now, it is best for Apple to push iMac sales over the pro line otherwise the iMac will be seen as a flop and no one will buy it.

As I posted in another famous thread, I have a feeling I saw this Ive/Jobs picture somewhere before some time ago, but with the cube on the table?! Someone with me?

I must admit it looks to be very functional, but at the same time I really don't like the design. It looks to clumsy to me, and we're gonna hear from the PC-users about this one - so many things to laugh at. Not that I care about what they think, but it is much cooler if they are in envy..

But I hope that when I see it "live" i will start to like or even love it. So my final judgment will come after I've seen it at heard the specs.

I think it is adorable and playful--just like the original iMac. Inventive and surprising--just like the original iMac. If you don't like it, don't buy it, because it's going to be a hit--just like the original iMac. Apple's got one sale right here!

Yeah...might not get too many more....HAHAHA....just kidding. I hope they sell a billion of them, for Apple's sake....just hope it turns out to be a TIME/Apple hoax just to snub their nose at everyone!!

...dudes - it looks awful! Someone wrote "iDumpling," that right! By the pictures of the new iMac (TIME and the other) Mr. Jobs has just giving us a 'dump!' <img src="graemlins/hmmm.gif" border="0" alt="[Hmmm]" />

The chrome steel back of the iPod was definitiely a hint at what was to come. I love it! A very slick, new, design language, with the new iMac at the center.

I think it would be decidedly un-Apple to run a bunch of wires to the machine. I'm thinking wireless input - can't wait to see what they've done about speakers too.

I'll tell you, when I first saw it I didn't like it very much but now that I have seen larger pictures of it, well, I absolutely hate it. Its ugly. It looks like a lamp from IKEA or something. Sorry, but I guess like no other Apple product before you either love it or hate it. There doesn't seem to be any middle ground.

Okay - it's awesome. Harks back to 1950's and 60's mini TV sets. Looks like an alien from War of the Worlds. Small and powerful. beautiful display - and THEY NOW HAVE A FORM FACTOR WHERE THEY CAN INCREASE THE MONITOR SIZE IN THE FUTURE. this is big.

    YAY!

And if the imac is a G4, whither the desktops?

The thing that has me most conflicted is that it's modern and cool, but I don't think anyone would call it "cute," you know? The old iMac...dunno, looked like something that wanted to be hugged by little kids - it was fun. In fact, I keep picturing the kid's area at the Apple stores and I have a real hard time seeing this fit in and survive (physically!) there.

What gets me is the balance of it. I can't quite describe what I mean but the display looks so delicate and thin contrasting with the bulbous base.

They kinda contradict each other. I think maybe seeing it in the flesh would be different.
