It is not an assumption. AirPrint is not a part of this build of 10.6.5. I have checked everything over and over. My only guess is they pulled it for shared printers.
AirPrint is all the rage nowadays. Nobody cares if the new release feels snappier anymore.
Nah, it's all about finding something, anything, to bitch and whine about. It's all about coming up with some criticism of Apple's policies. As long as it's a negative it's okay and important/
I am running 10.6.5 on my mac. I am also running 4.2 GM because i have a developer account. IT DOES NOT WORK. My iPad & iPhone 4 can not find my shared printer that is attached to my mac.
That's fine. I am going to see if airprint will allow me to print to the printer I have hooked up to my airport base station. I am running the 10.1b2, 10.6.5, and iOS 4.2 GM.
Apple appears to be taking an interesting direction as it relates to things that we have in the past associated as an OS framework. Case in point? If you have a new AppleTV and want to stream a movie from your desktop systems library, iTunes must be launched on that system.
I'm betting that Airplay and Airprint are functionally built around iTunes and not a direct hook to the core OS. Granted, there might be OS level frameworks that are a prerequiste, but the key functionality is in iTunes.
There are lots of possiblities. Air print could be downloaded later as a software update a la most printer driver updates for example...
Or it could be a secret pact between Apple and HP to sell more printers and then it'll come to other shared printers in a few months after early adopters have gonenout and bought new printers...

Yeah that should be a good test. Currently the printer is share over the network and is connected to my mac. Even windows PC's can print to it over the network. I am running 10.6.5 that was just released, iOS GM 4.2 on iPhone 4 and iPad & iTunes 10.1b2. So I am curious to see if they restricted it to those newer printer models from HP or directly connected to a Airport Extreme or Express.
Shared printing would have been nice but its not that big a deal. Just more of my OCD coming to light.
My hope is that it will have nothing to do with a Mac, a PC, or iTunes. I want to print to a printer connected to my AirPort base station. I'm waiting for that functionality.
Confirmed here as well via iPhone 3GS 4.2 GM & 10.6.5.

But if it were able to be hooked up like that, what would there be for you to buy at this point? I don't expect to see that enabled any time soon.
Your best bet may be to replace the AirPort's printer with one of the new HPs - that way you would have the best of both worlds. You would be able to print directly from your iPad, and you would continue to use the AirPort as a print server too.
Clearly the new HPs are the future tech, and combined with your iOS device, they will just work. Toss out the obsolete printer. You won't be sorry.

Maybe they pulled the support from Mac OS and instead are going to implement it into iTunes like the PC version. Perhaps that is easier since they already put it into iTunes on the PC side. Hopefully, they will release the final version of iTunes tonight and we can find out.
Am I the only person in the world who can print with OSX 10.6.5 with 4.2 GM?
It works!! Do I need to post a video?
Well are you using a build that came out before today? Because that is the build i am referring to. I mean i know mac developers had access to the earlier builds and it worked. So i guess were talking about the build that came out today and iOS 4.2 GM.
I guess Apple didn't want to hold the release of 10.6.5 back any longer and removed AirPrint for the time beeing.
Maybe it is rolling as separate update or even bundled with iTunes.
I hope the ActiveDirectory improvements include fixing SMB so CPU doesn't spike all the time, it's a known bug with version Apple used in 10.6.4 yet Apple won't even acknowledge to me they ever heard of such a thing occurring. Guess that's proof they never read their own discussion boards

I believe you. But it would be better if you can post a video because I wanna share this news with my friends in Korea who wouldn't believe nothing until I show them a proof.

We shouldn't make assumptions at this point.

That sounds like quite a kludge. I don't see how it makes sense to put yet another layer between the device and the printer.
What else should be eliminated?
On the iPad? Nothing. On the Mac? the Finder.

I would agree but it seems like a kludge to have iTunes running on my Desktop to stream from it instead of accessing the file or a system framework.
Based on the new page posted on the Apple Website...
http://www.apple.com/ipad/software-update/
Its obvious Airprint is still live. It also says printing to printers over a network which would imply a connected non specific printer...
