Late last year, it was said that Apple was developing its own open embedded SIM card that would work with multiple carriers. That change would have allegedly allowed customers to shop for mobile service directly from an Apple Store, eliminating the need for users to work with the carriers. . .
But Apple was said to have abandoned those plans after carriers in Europe allegedly threatened to cut subsidies. Mobile operators reportedly accused Apple of trying to wrest control of customers away from the carriers. . .
Well this news today came as a surprise. Rather than Apple developing it's own SIM card, it's Google. Apparently they're buying bulk service from cooperating EU telecoms, allowing Google to "control more of the phone experience"( taking cues from Apple?). Just a small program now, but where is Google going with it? For now simply an interesting development IMO, but I suspect there will be more to come.

Sim cards can be cut down to the size of the contacts and still work which would be 50% smaller than the micro sims. Surely that's small enough.
Cutting it down to the contacts would certainly not be 50% smaller than microSIM cards...
