You are out of your effin' minds if you think Nest is worth $3.2 Billion. That's a joke and Google is willing to dump tons down the drain knowing with an inflated stock price now is the time to strike on such frivolous buys.
Holy crap folks! Wake up.
AT&T, Verizon, GE, CenturyLink, PG&E and others are going to own the Smart Home space in 3 years.
Nest knows this or they wouldn't be shopping for a buyer.
By the way: "We're thrilled to join Google," Fadell said in a prepared statement. "With their support, Nest will be even better placed to build simple, thoughtful devices that make life easier at home, and that have a positive impact on the world."
============================
Fadell was never core to Apple's success.
Exactly
ADT sends me a placard every single month about their HA/Security services. I'm surprised AT&T isn't pounding down my door along with Comcast. This field is going to rapidly heat up as the big companies align themselves. Nest wasn't going to survive without offering Subscription Services and a lot more products. Smart move from them was to sell.
Please explain to me why Apple would be interested in buying a company that makes thermostats and smoke detectors? What interest would Apple have in this? iStat? iSmoke?
Because Apple needs to buy every company even if they aren't part of Apple's plans.
Now that Google bought Nest, they can track you in and out of the house. "I see you moved up that flight of stairs slowly, may I suggest a gym membership?"

A post full of ignorance. Do you seriously believe that?
Heck, Apple should buy tripadvisor today and incorporate it on Maps, otherwise google will do it.
Dwolla is the purchase you want if you're talking financial transactions.
Hmm… had never heard of Dwolla before. I checked them out, was impressed, and decided to create an account. Until it got to the point where they wanted my SSN.
Look at last year or even the last 2 years stock performance. Google stock return has trounced Apple over that time frame. Don't be a prisoner of the past (or at least don't cherrypick without adding anything substantive to the discussion).
Makes me think Google is more interested in Fadell for his hardware talent more than just Nest products. As long as Google doesn't plan on collecting Street Views of the inside of people's homes.
it's about energy data collected. I think Google is going to re-enter this market and see the energy consumption analytics - so they can sell you products based on how "green you are".
There is a lot of good here for Google - hopefully they don't blow it.
Yes, Fadell is moving to Google as is Matt Rogers according to their press release, but the way it's worded Nest itself will continue to be operated independently from Google.

Hogwash. Google is overextending itself into seasoned industries that will crush them. They'll write this experiment off in 24 months.
It seems Google is going full speed into comprehensive home automation. This is something that suits their strategy well. They are completely content to support the services that make disparate hardware communicate seamlessly, even when they don't make the hardware. This strategy is key for home automation since one company is unlikely to be the best at making every piece of hardware in the house.
I wonder if Nest has useful patents or if they were acquired simply for their human capital.
I own a Nest thermostat and I love the product. I am really disappointed to hear that Google bought them. I feel like they were really disrupting the home automation space and were poised to be a great stand alone, entrepreneurial company. Now, you can bet that the Nest's focus will change and their products will start to suck. I hope Google and Nest prove me wrong.
As far as other comments go - it would not have made sense for Apple to buy Nest, and I am not at all sure why Apple would want to buy Tesla. That is just insane.

AT&T finally showed its hands with the latest round of smart homes that it is testing in large markets presently. The Telcos will joint venture with the energy companies and get special structure with the PUDs to own the Smart Home.

No way. Stopped right there.
I don't remember them asking for a SSN. Also didn't mean to poo poo Square. Dwolla is a hidden gem because of it's fisync technology. They going to get swallowed up by some larger outfit just like ebay acquiring Braintree (financial backend company).
One thing you can say about these acquisitions. In a decade we'll look back and laugh at how byzantine our daily tasks were back in old 2014

When I saw this I just groaned. Just got a Nest for Xmas and quite like it. Was going to get the smoke detector when v.2 comes out. Now not so sure. Apple keeps perfecting the phone and tablet while Google acquires the rest of the world. Depressing.

I bet they'll be pulled from Apple Retail Stores soon....

Apple up 550% last 5 years
Google up 315% last 5 years
don't be a prisoner of the moment

This is only true if everyone owns one.
That's a long ways away...

Like all buyouts of such magnitude, they will be contactually bound for a specific period, before they split.

I wonder if Google with do anything with Nest property myenergy.com
ATT would hardly be an improvement over Google if privacy is a huge concern to you. In fact I'd consider it a step backwards. Unlike Google ATT really does sell customer information.
