First look: Hands-on with the all-new Apple Watch

At the conclusion of Tuesday's keynote presentation, Apple opened up the doors to a hands-on area built specifically for the event, where AppleInsider was able to get a first peek at at the new wearable Apple Watch.

Members of the press crowded around tables and displays where the new Apple Watch was available to view. Customization is a key selling point for Apple's new device, which comes in two sizes, three different styles, and with six different types of swappable bands.

We were able to test out a few of the bands, including a metal clasp style that quickly comes undone to remove the accessory.

In one demonstration, Apple showed how we could double-press the watch's touchscreen display to give a graphic representation of our heartbeat. The Apple Watch uses advanced sensors on the underside of the device to gather biometric feedback for health and fitness purposes.

Apple's fitness-focused applications were also on display with a tracker that measured goals for moving, exercising and standing throughout the day. Applications on the Apple Watch can be interacted with via the touchscreen as well as a "digital crown" dial on the right side of the device, which can be turned and pressed for various controls without the need to block the screen with touch input.

While hardware samples of the Apple Watch were made available to view on Tuesday, the device isn't yet in full production. Apple plans to ship its new wearable device in early 2015 with a starting price of $349.

that is really ugly, it looks so boring. i dont understand, why they hired that expert from LVHM. so my summary from today is that nothing innovative introduced, so now it will be real test, whether customers will buy this.

I was really excited for the "iWatch" before the event but I have to say that I am rather disappointed with their design.

I wonder how the lefties are going to be able to reach the crown without obscuring the display (which was the stated reason for not using pinch to zoom).

I'm wondering if it's interchangeable for left handed people. Can it be swapped to the right wrist and have the display flip 180? I know the digital crown would now be on the lower left instead of the top but that shouldn't be too big an issue.

i wonder how many years do i need to be here not to be "newbie". So i dont try anything it is just my personal review of new products. Earlier this day i read here that today it is last chance to buy AAPL below $100. But maybe today is the last day when AAPL was above $100.

My interest in buying a wearable was 0 out of 10, especially after seeing everything else out there. My only interest in seeing this unveiled was technical curiosity: what would Apple do in a new category I don't care about?

Now it's 7 out of 10. Give it a SOLID day battery--not 8-12 hours--and it would reach 8. No product will ever have the huge market of smartphone, but this IS a worthy new category after all.

I'm hoping I can hold out for the second generation before my interest reaches 10 :) But this thing does SO much more than I would have expected, and seems to do it WELL.

Now the competition will scramble to take their half-assed attempts to copy this on rumor alone... and will add some bullet points that sound similar. But will they deliver real functionality and usability? Will developer support come close? History says No.

Looks? This looks the best of any I've seen (and with far more customization) but what I'd probably want: the matte black or matte silver, with a third-party band (expect many). I'd consider the chrome, with the right band, but probably not. And I lean toward the smaller size.

P.S. Never thought about wanting maps on my wrist--until I saw that it will direct you WITHOUT needing the display or speakers, by using different taps for "walk left" and "walk right." And I can only imagine what the new haptic stuff will do for the vision impaired.

The UI can apparently invert. Wear it with the knob on either side you wish.e knob on either side you wish.

I gotta say, I'm impressed by how the relatively few options create the impression of vastly different watches. Change the band and the face graphuc and it's a whole new watch. Very cool and should be really fun. A watch that can be dressed up or down depending on the venue, go anywhere, look nice with any kind of dress. People will probably eat those designer bands up and I can only imagine how many third party bands will show up in time. Neat new category for a quality Apple device, and the OS looks very thoughtfully-designed, as we of course expected from Apple.

I'm kind of amused, by the way, by what a majority of the rumors have turned out to be true. I remember being surprise by how many details the "leaks" and "analysts" got right with the 5c and 5S, same this time around. Even NFC. I'm sure there were many that didn't pan out but generally there were few surprises today, and that's not necessarily a bad thing. ????

Feel free to short AAPL if you really believe that.  Check back in in 3-6 months and let us know how that worked out for you.

I wouldn't be surprised of you can't rotate the orientation, but I don't expect it will be a problem either way.  I'm a leftie and a watch wearer, and it seems easy enough to reach over the top of the face to interact with the knob (assuming it turns easily and doesn't require 2 fingers).

I'm a leftie, but my watch is still on my left wrist, lefties are used to working in a right handed world, it's just the way things are. If it has an 'upside down' mode then does it matter if the crown is below the button? That's only a software setting.
Think the magnetic straps look great and inductive charging is the way to go. Now we can see how half the rumours fit together and the whole is certainly better than the sum of its parts!
