Tim's not being paid nearly $75 million per year to be a human being. His job is to be the relentless promoter of Apple, full stop.

There's an old technique used in interviews when the interviewee is asked something other than what they are promoting and they still manage to redirect the line of questioning to what they are selling/promoting.

Tim Cook is not important. Apple is important. He needs to keep the focus on Apple, always.

Exactly. Probably what bothers me most about this is it takes the focus off Apple and puts it on him. I've been watching CNBC this morning and that's pretty much all they're talking about. To be honest I wouldn't mind if we didn't see or hear from Cook for a while.

The problem is that there's nothing else to talk about that's particularly interesting.

The Apple Watch has been acknowledged by Cook to be a niche accessory, and Apple will be reporting it as an accessory and not providing sales figures, much like every other technology company (Blackberry being an exception).

What else is there to get excited over? There have been incremental improvements to existing products. Apple Pay is nice, but boring. No Apple tv . No music overhaul. IBM partnership. Worthy, but boring.

    Nature abhors a vacuum.

Current and future stock holder's might not agree with his personal choices. This subject matter could lead to the detriment of Apple's leading position in the tech world. Forget about Samsung, Google and Microsoft. Mr. Cook's "gay agenda" could negatively affect the stock price and the public's perception of Apple as a whole. Right or wrong, Mr. Cook's "personal life" should be kept personal.

Yep. To be honest though Apple's board has been subservient to the CEO since Jobs reorganized it in the '90s.

... then you'll understand the courage it takes to tell people who you are and that you are proud to be that person... for the sake of all people that are just like you.

Surely his objective is that all people, no matter what their race colour or creed are just accepted as people. But all this shouting from the tree tops simply enforces the notion that Tim "is" different.

Despite being from a deeply religious household I was always taught tolerance of others and their views. I may not agree with someone's life choices, but if it doesn't affect me I'm more than happy for them to carry on.

    Very well put.

I fully agree and am a bit confused by this as well. He talks too much political issues, but rarely (except keynotes, of course) technical issues. Although I agree with Tim's political views – that's not why I want to listen to him.
Steves baby was apple. No doubt about that. While Tim is obviously very very pro apple, he also has a wider view and probably wants to use his position at Apple to do more than just sell Apple stuff. While the bottom line is always porting in a company if you have the chance to do more I think you should. For Steve it seemed to be making things work the way they should, and he did a fantastic job and left us with the best legacy. However got Tim it may be a little different. He seems just as set in trying to make the world a more fair and equal place for everyone, whether you are a manufacturing plant worker, customer and now just someone who might stuggle being gay if they are in a 'community' or 'environment' that does not accept that. Maybe Apple could expand their tag line from think different to something that encompasses this new direction. It is NOT a distraction just someone trying to make things a little better. Sorry rant over! ????

Odds are you've never been physically threatened for being straight, told you were going to burn in hell for being straight, had to fear you might lose your job (or never land one) if anyone found out you were straight, had your parents kick you out of the house and disown you because they found out you were a straight teen... The list goes on.

So no, you don't need 'straight pride'.

Ok I'll bit....?Watch is being reported in the "other products" category so Apple can keep as much about it private as possible. They get to choose what to disclose and not disclose. They don't want anyone more easily figuring out ASPs or product mix. Cook even said it may not stay in "other" forever.

Much like Eric's characterization of me or many of your IMPLIED characterization of pedophiles!

    Just saying....

You didn't hit a nerve, you were insulting. People are not proud of everything that makes them who they are. We all have behaviors and habits that we aren't proud of, and certainly nobody demented enough to be a pedo is going to be proud of that fact. To suggest that homosexuality is in the same category is insulting. If you can't see that, then you have a very small mind.

The point is that we're past the point of needing to be ashamed of sexual orientation.

Yeah, this is clearly all about what's cool. Tim's totally just trying to fit in. /s

Again, what has any of that to do with Apple? Apple is not a platform for gay, straight, black, white, women's, men's, or anyone else's special interests. Their niche market need not be narrower. As a shareholder, I want them to be the company for anyone and everyone who wants quality and is willing to pay for it. There is no need to go off message.

Tim's placement was earned.  It's probably more a statement of Tim's resilience and capability, since Tim was not a old school 'Steve Guy' (he was not a NeXTer), but was one of the earliest exec hires (Jony Ive is the only outsider  I remember [jon rubinstein was ex-NeXT] after the NeXT merger and Tim's hire).   He was Steve's operational Yin to the 'creative' 'Yang'  Steve had assembled around him.

Except Apple had been defying the market trend up until now. What changed between yesterday and today except for Tim's announcement? Nothing.

This just proves that sexual orientation doesn't matter. Being gay didn't stop him from becoming CEO of Apple. Because sexuality has no bearing on whether someone will be a good CEO or not.

Right... Just like racism is also over just because we elected a black president.
It proves nothing of the kind, just that you have to be twice as good to over come it in this society.

Eddy Cue and Phil Schiller aren't NeXT alum either. I think Cue came to Apple a few years before Jony Ive did.
