Android is actually fairly secure if the user follows proper security protocols. As far as the open debate is concerned, that's a matter of opinion, some require structure and others to dictate to them how a device should be used. For a programmer, tinker, hacker, an open platform can be very awarding, I use an iPad for certain tasks but I couldn't imagine just having an iPad. Not to say it isn't good, it's very good but also has many barriers and is missing some traditional OS components that drive people like me crazy. I can make an Android device sit up, roll over, play dead but I've also been using the OS since the beginning and compile my own builds. There is no such thing as the perfect device so I like having the best of all worlds, which means owning devices that use iOS, Windows 8, Android, Linux, Sail OS and Chrome OS.
So you're saying these cheap-ass Android tablets are secure-it-yourself hardware? Shouldn't be a problem for experienced techies who read Slashdot, know their way around the Darknets, and can hack into their own Linux-based LAN servers. In other words: Not recommended for ordinary people. Got it.

That's not what I'm saying at all, your twisting my words to fit some black and white world, though your probably right, an Android tablet other than say a Kindle HDX or Nexus tablet where everything is setup properly upon intial boot is probably not recommened for the average consumer, to much responsibility. An OS where everything is setup for the user, especially security settings and anything that has to deal with system customizations is removed like iOS would probably be much better for your so called, "ordinary people".
Though securing an Android tablet is a remedial task, even replacing the shipped ROM within these crap tablets can be done in about 10 minutes. The avarage person isn't going to do that so their better off spending a little extra and buying a Kindle HDX or iPad. Better hardware and user experince all the way around.
This actually highlights a serious, or should I say, several serious issues, with Android as a whole. I have a friend that works at a Best Buy subsidiary chain in Canada, and she pushes these like no tomorrow, and guess what, the cheap skates buy these up. In fact, she's admitted she often lies to consumers under direction from her department manager to tell customers it's "every bit as good as iPad". I've already scolded her for this, but she doesn't care, because it gives her the paycheque...
Sorry, but your friend sounds disgusting, and lacking in all integrity. And I'm not being extreme in saying that. In my business, I make dozens of decisions a day that result in me making less money from customers, but preserves my honesty and my integrity. I just can't sleep at night if I overcharge someone, upsell them to something they don't need, or am not completely honest about a service, even if I know they'd have no clue if I wasn't. If you're friend knows better, and is blatantly, knowingly lying to customers about a product in order to sell more, knowing full well what she's saying is complete horse-shit and that they're probably going to buy the wrong product and have a bad experience, then your friend is a terrible human being- no matter how much of a bonus she makes.
People often call me for advice about tech purchases, and I give them honest advice after careful and meticulously asking about their needs, and explain why it would be best for them. And very often, after wasting my time, they tell me they decided to get something completely different (and not at all what is right for them) because "the salesperson convinced me and told me it's best". People like your friend are the problem, and no matter how much she justifies it to herself, she's a liar and doing the world and consumers a disservice.
Someone I know who uses a Mac and an iPad, and has everything in iCloud, yesterday ended up getting an Android phone (against my advice), and excitedly told me "The Bell guy told me it was way better than an iPhone". Well done, agenda-driven reps.
The saying, "You get what you pay for", has been around for as long as products have been available for sale. Cheap shit products have also been around for as long as products have been available for sale.
If people are willing to buy cheap crap to save a few bucks then that's up to them. It's not like they haven't been warned. jmho
Yeah, but back in the old days, when you bought a cheap product, it usually meant you were only out of the money you paid for the product, if the product no longer function after a short period of time. And many people were willing to take that chance, even if they were forewarned. Now of days, buying a cheap product may mean you might lose your life savings and have your identity (or other personal data) stolen. I don't think many people would take that chance if they are properly warned. It's one thing to warn a buyer that the meat in the $2.00 hamburger may have more fat in it than the meat in a $12.00 burger. (and that may be expected even if the buyer wasn't forewarned). But it's another thing to warn that the meat in the $2.00 burger may have came from cows that died of Mad Cow disease. I could see people still buying the $2.00 burger if it were the former case but not the latter. Unless they weren't properly warned at all.
I’ll take the fatty burger; enough to saturate the senses.
... when I think of Android, a combination of these words immediately enter my mind: welfare, unemployed, cheapskates, third world, mud huts, polluters, bottom feeders, not tech savvy, self entitled and ignorant.

It's not an act, the guy is a rare breed, a bigot and racist with true passion in his ideology. Pure filth, to be accurate. It's clear from his posting history that he would happily slaughter any non-caucasian, or non extreme-right wing lunatic, (or anyone that doesn't look like him) in the streets, if he was given the "freedom" to do so. He often and consistently wishes death, pain, and suffering to black people, poor people, mexicans, muslims, liberals- and the list goes on. It's sad moderators put up with this garbage (while I get banned on calling people out for trolling), but it's clear they need his traffic, and the responses that his bigotry generates.
The most incredible thing about Apple ][ is how much he hates on the under-privileged for being "leeches", while the majority of these people are no doubt working 10x as hard as he is, often holding multiple jobs to make ends meet- while Apple ][ is content spending most of his time on this forum, hating on people like this, while pretending he is somehow a productive member of society and looking down on anyone who didn't happen to be lucky enough to pop out of the right vagina, like he apparently is. I can at least have a smidgeon of respect for those that bash the poor, but spend their days working their asses off to make money. But Apple ][ is a very special breed, and no doubt his hatred and bigotry stems from his deep hatred of himself.

You're quite right, and perhaps using the term "friend" isn't the best way to describe her, as we don't often socialize... Perhaps "acquaintance" would've described it better.
And like I said, I did scold her for it, but being a single-mom of a young son living on just the sales, she uses that as an excuse to make ends meet. I was actually starting to believe her, until I suggested she start working for Apple at a newly-opened location just 2 blocks from her place, that she could get benefits, better ours, no commission BS... She declined saying she won't work for sales if she can't get bonuses. That's when she proved she's got no ethics...
I too have lost count how many people have come to me, asking for advice on what they should get, only to turn around and get a POS Samsung junker because "the sales guy told me it's better than iPhone, plus he gave it to me for $0"... I just shake my head in utter disbelief and tell them to return it ASAP because they've been conned. They then look at me and say "You're too sensitive and just being a fool", at which point I tell them "there's the door, get out".
I've also gone to these stores and stopped customers many a time from buying some of the junk they sell, only to get scolded by the sales rep, at which point I tear a shred off them in public and make sure no one believes anything they have to say.
Just as Tim Cook's true passion lies in politics rather than Apple devices, your true passion seems to lie in venting on fellow posters, rather than discussing the contents of articles.
TC's passion for politics? Please, just stop now, you're really making yourself look truly foolish.
I think the OEMs and retailers have a lot to answer for regarding this issue. They are in it for the money. Most folk hear tablet, many can't afford the pricier ones or maybe just want it for a child and go purchase the cheap crap that Best Buy and the like promote. I work at one of the retailers mentioned and I see them displayed in the electronics section and I ask myself who buys this stuff? People like us who comment on tech blogs sadly do not make up the majority purchasing these items. I guess consumers can shoulder some of the blame especially if you believe you can get 'cheap and secure' in the same package. A lot of these devices are running versions of Android that are so obsolete it's ridiculous. I'll stick with my 'expensive' Apple products thank you very much.
Demeaning someone soley on their choice of technology has to be one the dumbest things I've encountered on this forum. Wbo cares if someone uses Android, Windows 8, Linux, etc., if it does what the user needs it to, what is the problem. So many people here act as if they are some how above the rest just because they use an Apple product. Grow up, it's just technology, not a religion, not a way of life, doesn't make you smarter and certaintly doesn't make you a better person. In fact in a lot of ways using a single system is hurting our younger generation, my niece is 14 years old, knows how to work an iPad like nobody's business, sit her in front of another system and she's completely lost. My kids grew up with multiple OS's, my daughters first computer was a SunRay dumb terminal connected to a Sun Terminal, Unix, she brought up Windows programs through Citrix, she was 7 when I installed it in her room. Our house hold consists of almost every type of computer their is and their better off for it. They can switch devices and know their way around them in seconds, so when they go out into the world nothing will hold them technology wise. This biased attitude towards systems like Android is nothing more than entertainment for forums such as this, in the real world no one cares.

I personally use a variety of OS's in my day. I have a Windows machine at work (windows 7 through a cloud based system) My home PC is also Windows 7 but my laptop is Chrome OS. My MP3 is iOS and my phone is Android. We are all entitled to use whatever OS we want if it does the tasks we need it for. I think we should also have the right do that without being insulted for our choices.

Most of the time the "better" and "not locked in" refers to the ability to pirate things.
No it's not a yes, the statement was to ridiculous to warrant an answer. I use and enjoy products from many different manufactures, not just one, people here just can't fathom that concept because it's Apple or die. Apple is just another computer manufacture to me, I use them when their products serve a purpose, which means I don't just buy something simply because the name happens to be a brand I like. There is also no such thing as the perfect computer, everything that I own has it's issues, let it be my 3 iPads with their tyrannical controlled OS, Surface Pro 3 or Panasonic 20" 4K TouchPad with their inconsistent OS or even the Nexus 9 with it's, oh that's good enough build quality. That being said their still great products even with all of their faults.

I can't believe how many typos I have in this thread. Yikes. Slow in-flight WiFi and an iPhone do not make help me become a better proofreader.
Don't worry.
They make about as much sense with the typos as without.

I'm pretty sure you've done that for years for those that prefer Apple products.
