This is why Cook is not the man to lead Apple into the next tech revolution. Politics is his game, and it will be Apple's bane.

Good to hear he avoided any photo op. Sounds like Cook wanted to appease and minimize the meeting.

Cook has good intentions, of course, and I'm glad a "minority' is running Apple. He has compassion for others who face discrimination.

Not sure if I fully agree that Apple is a magnet. As a corporation, I'm sure they carefully consider their actions like a carefully orchestrated Kabuki dance.

Their jobs are easily replaceable and not much skill is required to carry out their jobs.

They should be fired. 0 dollars an hour is certainly lower than 20 dollars an hour.

Compassion, dude. A lot of people are working hard and living hand to mouth. People are human beings and are not widgets.

With so much cash, shame on you Apple! for not paying hourly people reasonably and for not paying your US taxes!

Yet, people may wonder why America is divided. For a county of such privilege, we are a unhappy and hateful bunch.

There have been a lot of stupid things said in this thread, but this one takes the cake.  Apple is doing great, Cook is flying around the world attending to Apple business, and you're using this trivial local protest as an excuse to dismiss all that?

(Assuming/pretending that you're a well-off professional who owns a nice home.)  Since you're making lots of money do you pay your lawn care guys 50% more than they charge your neighbor, just because?  Do you decline to take the mortgage interest tax deduction (saving thousands in federal income taxes each year), just because?  And if, so that's your own money, so good for you.  But I don't see anywhere that Apple shareholders have asked Apple to pay more taxes than they owe and to pay higher than market rates for basic services.

Its B.F.  Almost everything he says is a pure troll comment.  Just add to your blocked list and you will enjoy a much better forum experience.  If more persons did this, he would get very few responds/comments, and eventually move along somewhere else.

Maybe gim-bat can respond with his tax filing, so we can see how much extra he pays into tax beyond what is legally required.  Surely he isn't a hypocrite that criticizes others for what he does himself.

Tech & automated solutions are certainly a trend that will disrupt many occupations.  You may see the pay of security occupations rise, but only for those that can do more (e.g. manage some of the technology, enhancing productivity), so you will end up with higher pay for few persons.  Not sure that is what the union is looking at though.

Not sure this can be found on the web today, back in the early 90's Apple outsourced all it cleaning service trying to cut cost. They open it up for bid and finally award it to a small SJ base minority owned, non-union cleaning company. Well the bigger union controlled cleaning company cried fowl. They claimed this non-union company was under paying its workers and did not provide them any benefits and a long list of things to make Apple look like they hired a wetback sweat shop.

With the permission of the new cleaning company Apple published the details of this company award, and show that in fact this company paid competitive wages and their full time works got benefits day one unlike the union company which required their works to be with the company one year before they go any benefits. The list went on, in the end the union look really bad and this little company had more people knocking on its door trying to get job or do business with them.

People need to stop glorifying the military. The people that glorify the military are probably people who would never sign up and never did serve their country.

No glorification intended on my part, just a valid comparison. I served for 6 years in the military and have several family members who have also served, some for over 20 years. I fully understand how tough it is for junior military families to make ends meet when they are stationed in a high cost of living area like SF Bay, San Diego, DC, and Seattle. If living gloriously includes needing to obtain food stamps to feed their families then I guess you could say they are living the high life. It's only after factoring things like housing allowances that junior personnel begin to approach income equity with the security guards in question. You also have to factor in the challenges that spouses of military members face when trying to sustain a career when they are being reassigned every few years. With the tax burdens and cost of living challenges faced by most American families today, having two income earners is a necessity, especially in areas like California. Today's all volunteer force offers little more job security than any other career. Service members have to perform or they will get tossed, just like they would in any other job. The military has also been downsizing and forcing involuntary separations. Yes, you can get laid off from the military.

I do understand where you're coming from about people who love to wave the flag and espouse patriotism but would never consider serving themselves, much less, allowing their children to serve. This applies to almost all of today's conservative radio celebrities. Nothing would solve this problem better than having compulsory national service for all US citizens, be it in a military service or social service capacity. I'm 100% behind such a model rather than the free ride by birthright that all Americans are gifted with today.

There's been claims of unfair treatment of tech contract workers for a long time, and not just at Apple.

It's not about paying 50% more it's about paying what others(not well-off as apple) are paying for similar services.

The comparison you make is ridiculous, a well-off professional is paying more taxes than apple who's not paying what they are supposed to... A well-off professional does not have a hoard of cash that doesn't know what to do with

Companies have greater restrictions than individuals when it comes to the use of cash. There is no comparison.

Yes they are certainly DUMB, they aren't approaching this situation  intelligently.

IMO $20 per hour is fine to stand around being a witness.  They need to get better educated to get a higher paying job.

So again Apple is a target for those wanting to dip into Apple's hard earned profits.

Suppose to? They pay all US taxes they are legally required to pay. Don't like the laws? Change them.

As for hoarding cash, many people hoard cash to save for retirement, children and rainy days.
