Apple has literally gone insane. True video editing professionals & graphic design professionals & professional programmers need a LARGER SCREEN, such as the now-discontinued 17" MacBook Pro. But instead, they keep making things smaller. There was once a time when professionals could actually be MOBILE PROFESSIONALS with Apple's laptops. Not anymore. I sure miss the Steve Jobs days.
Calm down Ace, the new Macbook isn't replacing their other laptops. And you can connect an external monitor to all of them if you need more screen space.
The Magsafe power connector was/is the best hardware design feature of the Apple 'book lineup in my opinion. It has saved my power connector at least 100 times and may have saved my MBP dozens of times. It is a mistake to eliminate it. I suspect it will be back.

Switch to decaf for crying out loud.
Calm down? I don't think he's upset enough. I'm serious. The latest Mac Mini is another example of Apple making things WORSE with every new hardware revision. Fewer upgrade options, slower, and the list goes on. They are so, so arrogant it's ridiculous. Thank god there are "whiners" out there making some noise. They are the only ones who are honest about what Apple is doing. Sure, this may become a big hit...but Wal*Mart is a big hit too. So is McDonald's. Appealing to the unspohisticated "masses" does not mesh with what Steve Jobs believed.
Nice device, but I'm a little unsure how the Air, Pro, and this tier out, especially as it's actually more portable than the Air.
Is the Air always going to remain non-Retina and be the "cheapest" option? This is going to be there new mid-range, and the Pro will remain the top end?
Part of me would have preferred to have this basically be the "new" Air, but I'm guessing they want to remain having a sub-$1000 line.
I think they're getting rid of the Air as we know it and going back to MacBook and MacBook Pro. They might get rid of the 11' and 13" Airs and go to a cheaper sub-$1,000 non-Retina, slower, 12" machine-but if its heavier, how can they brand that an 'Air' and this MacBook?
I think the new MacBook 12" looks amazing, but I don't quite understand it's role. I mean, the top-of-the-line 12" version is $1799… but if you configure the 13" Air, you seem to get a better CPU, Intel 6000 (compared to the 5300 in the 12"), and a bigger screen and more ports. Am I missing something, or does it feel like they want to get rid of the Air and replace it with the new 12" MacBook?
Sure. The Air has more ports (for them as uses 'em, and you can use more than one at a time), and as long or longer battery life, and likely better performance in most cases. The Macbook costs more than the 13" Air unless you max the Air's memory and mass storage, at which point they cost the same. The Macbook does have a retina screen.
The new Macbook isn't replacing it (yet), and won't if Air sales don't take a big hit.
The Only Thing that I would change is the 'Macbook' writing on the screen. I prefer to have it written at the bottom case, like they did with the Macbook Pro. Right now it is a bit of a disturbance of what would otherwise be a pristine experience.
I'm really curious what the real-world tests will make of the fanless design. I bought a Macbook Pro back in September after years of being a die-hard MBA owner. One reason being that I was utilizing my machine more and more, and the poor MBA was just running hot. Those fans would really make some noise at full tilt.
With no fans to disperse waste heat, the aluminum chassis can only do so much. I'm really curious. I don't think I'll be a good candidate for the new rMBA, but I do like where it's going. A lot of that great tech will certainly trickle down to the MBP's as well.
I'm not sure getting rid of the MagSafe was a good idea. That was great tech and save a lot of ports from being busted out. I suspect a lot of AppleCare visits on those.
They should change the wording of the 'Force' Click. It sounds very brutal and drastic. Like 'Force' quit or 'Force' reload ... things you only do in desperation/frustration.

OH. My. WORD. Flipping great, get in, get in, get in.
So the Ipad Pro turns out to be a retina macbook "air".
Yup.
Great machine, definitely want one but....that price is all wrong. Why does it have to $1299? This should be $999.
Hopefully it will be once they phase out the Air product line?
Also, no-one here cares that we've lost MagSafe?

I want one, but I don't really want one.

I could not agree more. I need a 17" Macbook Pro with lots of ports.
And SCSI and a JAZZ disk slot.
WAIT WHAT? THE AIR STILL EXISTS?

disappointing that there's no plan for a usb-c to ethernet adapter for this, was waiting for this macbook to come out

At least one anti-Flash talking point is moot.

One More Thing:

I liked it, until I realized that each refresh adds to Safari's page history. I guess that'll be an old habit to break.
