Putting aside the fact the guy is a colossal bigot, what's wrong with trying to encourage bringing industry home?

It's stupidly idealistic to say have it done 100% by tomorrow, but something like "50% USA-based profit has to come from USA-manufactured goods by 2023" or something is more realistic, and impose a tax penalty for those that don't - the proceeds of which go towards aiding in funding US-based manufacturing.

Why not just outlaw foreign trade altogether?  Foreigners don't deserve to have jobs, and we need to bring home all low-paying jobs, no matter how much the rest of the economy has to pay to make it happen.  /s

    Typical Trump.
    Sound bites to garner attention.
But little or no details on implementation.
Just like how he would build a wall on Mexican border...."with good management"

China has invested heavily and intelligently in becoming a mecca for manufacturing. For the US to build the facilities, massive infrastructure, talent, and neighborhoods that revolve around manufacturing would take decades. Those of us who have visited and dealt with manufacturing are in awe at what China did, and therefore can produce. Politics and taxes are another thing. Hate as much as you will, but the stability of Communist China's political/industrial focus is close to impossible for the US to replicate. We get a new party with new agendas every 4 to 8 years. Taxes is another issue. A Chinese company, such as Foxconn, can hire 3,000 (Three thousand) engineers in two weeks!!! Tim Cook phrased it accurately in last month's 60 min interview. "Tim Cook: Yeah, let me-- let me-- let me clear, China put an enormous focus on manufacturing. In what we would call, you and I would call vocational kind of skills. The U.S., over time, began to stop having as many vocational kind of skills. I mean, you can take every tool and die maker in the United States and probably put them in a room that we're currently sitting in. In China, you would have to have multiple football fields."

First of all, Foxconn doesn't manufacture anything. Foxconn ASSEMBLES the iPhone. The distinction is very important. Manufacturing involves taking raw materials (e.g. steel) and creating a component out of it. Companies all over the world MANUFACTURE the the individual components that go into the iPhone. They're shipped to Foxconn, which takes those components and assembles them.

Apple doesn't own any production factories. Apple pays component manufacturers to build them to its specifications. The company has no choice but to simply go wherever the best manufacturer is located. If the best manufacturer can't be found in the USA, it's not Apple's fault. Apple has sourced things from American manufactures before. If GT Advanced had worked out, it would have been a great partnership.

Show me what Apple can do to "bring manufacturing home" when it doesn't own any of that manufacturing.

When Apple tells Foxconn to turn on the production lines for a new product, Foxconn can hire 27,000 industrial Engineers in less then a month, and have them on site and working in days after they are hired. That would be an impossibility in the U.S. It would take months even a year or more to pull that off here. And it's that surplus of trained engineers and their desire to do whatever is needed (live in a dormitory, eat fish heads, have no social life, etc.) that separates Chinese workers from USA workers...

USA engineer wants to relocate their family, study the local schools, find a house to buy, negotiate a moving fee, and a process that goes on and on... The Chinese engineer is interviewed on Monday and is hard at work on Tuesday. End of bullshit. The USA hasn't seen that kind of ability to build up production instantly since WWII.
Then again, a Chinese worker in a factory cannot sue their employer for discrimination, join a union, or a long list of other legal threats that undermine the viability of US-based businesses every day.
What you say is true. However this country just doesn't have tens of thousands of engineers unemployed and ready to relocate on a few days notice. In China that is possible and Foxconn can assemble a huge work force of skilled workers in such a short time, it makes it possible for Apple to pull the trigger on a new product and have full production by Foxconn in time for an expected ship date only weeks out...8 to 10 weeks. It's not just in our culture to make such a commitment to change.

I miss the old forum format that allowed blocking posts from certain typically rabid members, hence reducing the number of seconds spent daily on having to scan hyper-inflated opinion fluff...
Apologies, I take it back. I just figured out how to "ignore" a poster. Yay!
Oh thanks for that, I will have to research that myself.

If it wasn't such a horrifying prospect for the rest of the world (and for a large amount of Americans) I would almost literally laugh myself to death if Trump got elected. He is the epitome of a bankrupt politcal system.

This guy is a dangerous idiot. You need to win first Trump. And even at that they are a company you moron. You don't have the authority.
He's a populist. He's just saying things people want to hear in this case.

Surely you mean "He's just saying things some people want to hear..."  I'm not sure that qualifies as populist.

In a campaign speech at Virginia's fundamentalist Liberty University on Monday, Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump tangentially promised that he would force Apple to manufacture its hardware in the US instead of looking to overseas labor

"We're going to get Apple to build their damn computers in this country instead of other countries," Trump said

Everyone has the right to say something idiotic occasionally. Apparently Donald Trump is making it a full-time job.

He has found a winning formula for his fans though, he doubles down on every stupid comment, to his followers being doubly stupid is impressive it seems.

YOU WANT CHANGE IN OUR NATION? YOU HAVE GOT IT, BY VOTING FOR DONALD TRUMP? This is the epitome of what Democrats and the GOP Syndicates is doing to this sovereign country and only Donald Trump, a Conservative that the two parties are livid about? Just remember Donald Trump is disliked, because he cannot be bought by the wealthy special interests. It means change for the American people, as they have been ripped off long enough by the politicians that are in the financially dependant on the deep pockets of the affluent, which is the dark side of this government; very few are innocent of taking money. They are happy with their pockets full of cash and it's not only for their campaigns, but their own personal use. JUST REMEMBER DONALD TRUMP IS UNTOUCHABLE, AS NOBODY CAN BUY HIS ALLEGIANCE TO THE US PEOPLE. THE REST ARE PUPPETS OF THE POWERFUL, THE INFLUENTIAL WHO HAVE THEIR LOBBYISTS HIDING IN EVERY CORNER OF CONGRESS WITH A BLANK CHECK. ONCE SEATED IN CONGRESS MAYBE MONTHS OR YEARS LATER, THEY WILL RECEIVE A PHONE CALL...IT'S TIME TO PAY THE PIPER? SO MANY ISSUES CAN BE RESOLVED BY THIS BUSINESSMAN AND NOW POLITICIAN ON BOTH SIDES WILL DO EVERYTHING IN THEIR POWER TO DESTROY HIS PARAMOUNT REPUTATION FOR GETTING THINGS DONE. King Obama is to blame for the lax enforcement at the border, but the House of Representatives also must carry the REAL BLAME, as they let pass the Omnibus budget and funding everything that this extreme Liberal President wanted. This includes taxpayer money for the resettlement of Syrian Refugees, which should remain in safe zones in their own country guarded by neutral troops and BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to house, educate and offer benefits to illegal alien entries throughout our nation. ONLY ONE MAN, ONE VERY TOUGH GUY WILL BEGIN THE DEPORTATION OR REPATRIATION OF THE MILLIONS OF ILLEGAL ALIENS SQUATTING HERE. AFTER INAUGURATION BUILDING THE WALL, FIRST ON DONALD TRUMPS LIST AND THEN THE PINNACLE OF INTERIOR ENFORCEMENT MANDATED E-VERIFY. THE DEPLOYMENT OF 1000 OF MORE ICE AGENTS, TO IMPLEMENT A NEW PHRASE OF E-VERIFY TO SEEK OUT THE UNKNOWN NUMBERS OF ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS, OVERSTAYS AND MIGRANTS, USING DIGITAL E-VERIFY. AS A FULCRUM IN THE WORKPLACE, TARGETING TO SEE WHO ARE HERE LEGALLY? AGENTS WILL COME DOWN HEAVILY ON BUSINESSES THAT PROVIDE WORK FOR ILLEGAL NATIONALS, AND THEY WILL BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE WITH HARSH PENALTIES. "Every immigrant who comes here should be required within five years to learn English or leave the country." A Quote from President Theodore Roosevelt California issued more than a half-million driver’s licenses under a new law granting the identifying documents to immigrants who may be in the country illegally,” the Associated Press noted. “The Department of Motor Vehicles announced Wednesday that 605,000 licenses were issued since AB60 took effect last January. That’s out of 830,000 applications.” MORE STATES ARE BEGINNING TO ISSUE DRIVERS LICENSES TO FOREIGN NATIONALS WHO ARE STEALING AMERICAN JOBS AND TRUMP WILL END IT. Issues that matter: Donald Trump has said: 1. Illegal immigration: Trump said it is one of the most important things to talk about, and that the United States cannot take chances. 2. ISIS: He said it reflects the greatest Trojan horse ever, and must be stopped. 3. Second amendment: "It is very good and will be totally protected if I'm elected." 4. Super PACS: He said these groups are running politicians and must be gotten rid of to get a clear vision of what's really going on in America. 5 Common core: "It's very bad, and children should be educated locally." 6. Military: "It is the least prepared it's been in generations. We will build it up again so no one wants to mess with us. We are protecting countries so rich, but they are paying us peanuts." 7. Border Issues: He said he would build a safe zone. 9. Corporate Welfare: Trump will renegotiate all the foreign countries fleecing America, and take back our jobs and businesses who have flown the coop, and will be given the opportunity to use FREE TRADE and not play America for a easy victims. 10. Health care: He said he would repeal "Obamacare." 11. U.S. Veterans: "They must be taken care of. In many cases, they are treated worse than illegal immigrants." 12. Senior Citizens: Older citizens who are retired should be treated with respect and enough money to live a comfortable life. They have earned that right.. UNDER A DONALD TRUMP PRESIDENCY IMMIGRATION RAIDS WILL BE FOR REAL, NOT THESE CONCOCTED LIES BY THE WHITE HOUSE. RED FLAG WARNING: IOWANS FLOOD THE CAUCUSES AND VOTE FOR DONALD TRUMP. IN NEW HAMPSHIRE GET OUT AND VOTE FOR TRUMP. NEVADANS AND EVERY AMERICAN WHO WANTS CHANGE OUR NATION FOR THE BETTER, THE LIKES WE HAVE NEVER SEEN BEFORE IN OUR LIFETIME. VOTE FOR TRUMP!

I like that he's in there, saying stuff that everyone is thinking. We wouldn't even be talking about walls and immigration / refugee issues without him bringing these issues to the fore. At least not the same way. He says things without thinking them through. That's classic Trump behavior. He should have watched Tim Cook explain why Apple uses China to built their phones. Where else can Apple find the engineering labor that will be willing to work in those factories? Seems like drudgery and maybe the Chinese are more adept at that kind of work. In a utopia, it would be grand to have all Apple's money here, all the manufacturing here, etc. But free trade is about tradeoffs. We get superior products at fantastic prices. China gets the iPhone labor. By no means does America get the shit end of the stick. You have to look at all the variables.

If Donald Trump is to win, I have fear that US economy will go the other direction and in turn affecting global economy. The world has changed much and realising the globalised economy is important.

Maybe if Apple could bring home the money that it already paid all the legal taxes on overseas and was not facing double taxation if they did, they just might manufacture more here.  IDK, just a thought.  I stand ready to be flamed as it's not a subject I know much about.
I bet the main concern for Apple is how much they spend on assembling a single product.
    1. I doubt it will be the same sum for products assembled here, in the US comparing to what Apple has to pay for that in China.
    2. I doubt that bringing taxes and paying them in the US is going to help alleviate 1) problem.

Hon-Hai ("Foxconn") would disagree. It sure appears they manufacture products in addition to assembly.
