The US also has a big car industry and the supporting part manufacturers (they are a key component); this isn't the case for consumer electronics.
It is not really about the Asia parts sourcing or cheap labor. It is about speed. A single Foxconn production line can produce 10K iPhones a day and within a week or two, they can switch over to a completely new design because human assemblers are really adaptive, where as reprogramming robots is very tedious and time consuming. US factories would be unlikely to keep up that pace. With a fully automated production line the US might be competitive on price and maybe even speed, eventually, but what is the point if it doesn't create any US jobs?
Donald Trump is a Buffon and a clown and anybody who votes for him is nuts.
he is a million times better than Hillary or that commie Sanders. Let's see how well Apple will do when it will be nationalized by Sanders.
Sorry, I'm not even a Sanders fan- how exactly will Sanders "nationalize" Apple? And you make this absurd attack in order to defend someone who just said that he will "force" Apple to manufacture all their products in the US, even thought any rational and sober person that's an utter impossibility? Sanders is not the one that announced he will make Apple do anything, that's Trump.
While the Mac Pro is made in the USA, nearly all of the componentry is not and never will be.
Meanwhile Trump's campaign merchandise is produced in China, despite 100% USA sourced and made options being readily available. A choice that bucks the trend of presidential candidates producing their merchandise in the USA.
If Tesla can do it, Apple can do it. It's that simple. The Forbes article is right on ! If they need Trump to convince them of it - so be it.
Tesla is still in the red, they lose money for every vehicle they sell, their vehicles are subsidized by the US gvt, their marketshare does not even make a blip on any graph, and their manufacturing dynamics, compared to Apple, is utterly incomparable, because of the type of product they sell. Tesla (or any other US car company) does not manufacture in the US because of altruism, but because it makes more financial sense for them. And that's just the start of what's wrong with your insane comparison.
But sure, "If Tesla can do it, Apple can do it. It's that simple".
I can't stand the level, and quantity of stupidity on this board anymore. It's just so over the top. To think I used to come here for intelligent discussion.
You're a fucking idiot, as are all the other vacuous Trump supporters in this thread. This is not an insult, it's a statement of fact. People like you have so little regard for anything approaching truth or reality, anything goes in order to push your twisted ideology. Not sure how you manage to get out of bed in the morning.
Who are you supporting, you genius?
Is it that disgusting woman, serial liar, incompetent, corrupt politician Clinton, who is currently surrounded by deep and troublesome scandals on all sides or is it that maniac Sanders, who is a fully blown socialist who dreams of a 90% tax rate? He's a complete nut job.
Those clowns have no chance at all. I predict a lot of sad and angry little fucking idiots running around and whining and crying come November. I even predict some politically motivated suicides. It's happened before. It's going to be so awesome! I can hardly wait!

Lie.
Trump mentioned specifically that his "Make America Great Caps" are made in the USA.
He even commented on that the other day, when he spotted a few fakes in the crowd.
Maybe if Apple could bring home the money that it already paid all the legal taxes on overseas and was not facing double taxation if they did, they just might manufacture more here. IDK, just a thought. I stand ready to be flamed as it's not a subject I know much about.
There would be no double taxation. They would get a credit for any taxes paid overseas. Since they have paid only 1.8% overseas, they would have to pay a sizable difference - which in the end amounts to the same level of tax as domestic earnings.
Why is the issue of repatriation of overseas moneys by US corporations so willfully misrepresented to make it seem as if it's a huge impost on companies when it's not? There should be no need for talk of a tax holiday or special deal.
Correct, no double taxation, just a whopping penalty (35% minus overseas tax paid). That is Zero Incentive to "patriate" the profits (not the misnomer "re-" because the money would be coming in for the first time -- How Many Times Must This Be Explained??).
After reading the PDF's provided from earlier posters, I better understand the procedure that Apple, et al are being investigated with (Apple charges outside of US subsidiaries so much for products / services that eat up most of the profits equaling very, very low taxes thru Ireland).

The comparison was published by Forbes ;-) And I agree, that's exactly what we want Apple to do again in the future and they shall have a financial benefit for having manufacturing in the USA, provide jobs and feed families locally. I rather pay a few dollars more for a Macbook proudly Made in USA, wouldn't you do the same ?

^^^ben20, you still don't get it? Tesla makes cars. There is a car-making infrastucture in the US that goes back to the beginning. It has suffered somewhat from offshoring, but you can still get manufacturing engineering and technology here.
This is not true of electronics. The US threw away nearly all its electronic manufacturing to Asia starting two generations ago. Asian electronics mfg. dwarfs the US's. If there were even to be a lousy assembly plant like Foxconn has in Brazil, the engineering of the construction and the production would all have to be imported from China, Korea, Taiwan or Japan. Apple engineers would have to stand idly by and hope to learn how it's done.
You children just have to grow up. Apple can create, design, program, prototype, but when it comes to producing 25 million phones per month, they have to turn to the process experts with two generations of deeply embedded experience.
How in the world could this work? I can't imagine any way that they could manufacture the enormous numbers of Mac products in the U.S. Besides, lots of countries contribute parts to the Apple product line - is he going to demand that Apple make everything in the U.S.???? really... Trump is full of it.

And then he admitted that actually he does get his merchandize from China. But it's OK - it's apparently China's fault, and he had no choice.

"Feed families locally"? Apple isn't a fucking charity. Also, if you think the only difference between manufacturing in China and the US is "a few more dollars", you're insane. Why can't people like you do an ounce of research before confidently spouting such garbage, and attacking Apple at the same time? You're obviously absolutely clueless about the supply chain, making it sound like it's trivial to do in the US whats done in China. There's a million and one insurmountable complexities, beyond selling products for "a few more dollars". There are entire CITIES in China devoted to manufacturing, with deep supply chains involved in everything from the raw minerals to the final product, and which employ hundreds of thousands of people- not to mention a shitload of expertise. Spend less time trolling, and more time learning about the world. Your posts in this thread have been utterly moronic, to say the least.
This is a brilliant idea. I think apple's profit margin is very high, the manufacturing cost of a $500 iphone is less than $200. When the tax is applied, apple will be forced to manufacture in US. I think the end result will be less profit for apple an somewhat increase in the price. I think even the price might go up a little, it will benefit the whole country by doing so.
Maybe Apple is considering a manufacturing switch to the US also. But this must make financial sense, because the shareholders demand that. They could have spend the 200 billion dollars they burned to easily create all the factories and robots needed to do all the production in the US. But Apple instead made a symbolic (and very very very very costly) gesture to its shareholders. Even if they had spend the money in a sensible way it would take a long time to build all the factories and robots and to get it running smoothly, maybe 10 years or more. But this would have a huge repercussion, Apple thinks the biggest market by far will be China, if they shut down all factories and create an army of unemployed Chinese, China will probably kick Apple out and people would have a lot less to spend. In short, Apple will kill its future (and current) market.

Apple has a lot of coporate social responsibility in the United States ! Providing jobs and carreers where your make most of your coporate profits is big part of that, Apple does btw a lot of charity here and we respect that very much and it certainly impacts our buying decicions ! I am sure you will agree with me, don"t you ? And we sure had a good laugh with your feedback ;-)
I'm not a Trump supporter, however in his defense, the Trump Organization is a global business so there is nothing hypocritical about using global resources. Furthermore, in the link you provided, Trump said that "he beats China all the time", as meaning, striking favorable deals for his organization, which by inference he would extend to the US/China trade deals that are generally viewed to be mostly unfavorable for the US.
Not sure who blows more shit out of their respective asses- Trump or Cook. This is actually comparable to Cook's sad 60 minutes ramblings of why apple was dodging billions in taxes. Or maybe it was the diatribe about the lack of vocationally trained workers in the US, hmmmm, either way same insane ramblings from men that share ridiculous comb overs.
