Three new iPhone models expected in fall, half of production going to less expensive LCD v...

In line with other analyst consensus, investment firm RBC Capital sees Apple releasing one LCD iPhone model and two with OLED screens in the 2018 fall release event, with production beginning on all three in the very near future.

According to the report authored by analyst Amit Daryanani and obtained by AppleInsider, in 2018 Apple will release one 6.1-inch full-screen LCD Model with 3D sensing and two OLED models. RBC also expects that iPhone production will include 80-90 million units in the second half of 2018, and of that production, the LCD model will consist of about half.

While that would represent a decline from the more than 100 million expectation of the iPhone 8/X cycle from earlier this year, RBC attributed the decline in orders from parts suppliers mostly to "supply chain partners managing inventory levels more diligently." In addition, Daryanani writes, Apple is insisting on "incrementally tighter cost management," which RBC is attributing to an increasing amount of features, like Face ID possibly making it to the entire line.

Daryanani expects a "regular production ramp schedule," which should begin in May. In 2017, the iPhone 8 began construction in May, with the iPhone X not seeing large quantities off the production line until September and early October.

These predictions are roughly in line with previous supply chain-derived expectations about the next iPhone cycle, including a Digitimes report in March that also predicted three new iPhone models, including an LCD product that would include about 50 percent of the production. Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities had predicted three new iPhones in late 2018 in November 2017, and maintained that prediction earlier this year.

The upside scenario, according to Daryanani, would entail faster-than-anticipated growth in Apple's services, leading to gross margins over 40 percent, while the downside would involve Apple losing market share in both smartphones and tablets.

"We believe AAPL's current stock price creates an attractive entry point for investors to benefit from its ability to generate revenue and EPS growth in FY18," Daryanani said in the report, also calling Apple's valuation "materially sub-par to what we anticipate is its long-term revenue and EPS potential."

Daryanani attributes the optimism to several things: The ramping up of the iPhone release, the refresh cycle of Macs and iPads, the potential launch of a new Apple streaming service or any other major product line, and the passage late last year of tax reform legislation, which Tim Cook said in January will cause Apple to repatriate $350 billion in cash back to the U.S.

RBC Capital maintained its Apple price target of $203 citing a "host of tailwinds - capital allocation, services growth, gross-margin upside and attractive valuation" with an upside scenario of $230 and a downside of $140. Apple's stock opened Monday at $169.88 on the NASDAQ. The firm cut its price target on Apple from $205 to $200 in February, ahead of Apple's quarterly earnings.

Daryanani's predictions are based on "supply chain checks" and supplier visits.

I see where you are coming from. It's the same story where I live (eastern Europe) - but well, Apple is a synonym of quality and luxury (at least here). Brand awareness and perception are one of those factors that lets them set the price on such high level.

Analyst Amit Daryanani doesn't have good track record of his own original research. He Peggy back o others and still come out wrong.

Blame your government for imposing tariffs that only benefit their corporatist supporters.

His upside of $230 hardly unimaginable. Phones and paraphernalia are about as vital today as food. Apple penalized compared to consumer staples companies like P&G in Wall Street view. Sooner or later they’ll come around.

    Dear ,

IF YOU DO THE ENTIRE IPHONE LINE WITH FACEID YOU WILL LOSE A LOT OF SALES!

If you think you can shove face recognition down people’s throats think again.

There are many like me that won’t swallow it. TouchID is brilliant and enough.

 is losing its Steve Jobs way going down the 1984 path it promised everyone it would shatter.

I DON’T CARE IF IT IS STORED IN THE ENCLAVE! There are no unbreakable strongholds in the digital age, it’s a matter of time to break them. I WILL NOT TRUST ANY CORPORATION WITH MY FACE to the best of my abilities and strength.

And I just know there’s an immense silent mass that feels the same.

Probably sales of iPhone 8 going up in late 2018/2019 if this all FaceID iPhones scenario happens. But the blind :s will think it’s some price thing going on or some other dumb take on the matter...

So go on being the hip company Steve Jobs did NOT create and you’ll see.

    Sincerely grateful,
    Your discerning  client

I'm sure Xamax has sample data of the 100,000 plus people he polled to get a reasonably accurate statistical model ... hahaha of course I'm joking, he's pulling from a pool of one person for his claims. Oh, and unless he has no form of state ID, passport, driver's license, never been arrested, etc -- the government and many other entities already have his photo. Funny how that doesn't matter, only it being stored and encrypted on a local device is a horrible pox that will ruin the company --no doubt because of all those headlines showing how easy it is for people to steal and use your FaceID (oh wait, that's Android). Just like how easy it was for people to steal and use your TouchID -- oh wait that never happened.

That said, I personally doubt there will be three FaceID phones in the fall. Generally speaking, analysts are the worst about indulging in wishful thinking, and there's been no indication that the companies that make the FaceID integrated system are expecting a tripling of orders for them, though it is still early days. I would expect that Apple will incrementally improve the line with two FaceID phones (the current iPhone X and the new iPhone X Plus) and one or two Touch ID phones (the ... um, iPhone 8S and maybe 8S Plus?).

Bring back the "S" phones, dammit! :)

Good that you have an opinion, and emailed Cook about it, but wow, there's a lot just plain not correct here.

if you replace the word Face ID with Touch ID, the AI forums are littered with missives like this from back in the day. And "hip company" -- Apple has always been this, intentionally created that way by Jobs.

Apple's well crafted front placed touchID is undeniably well received. iPhone users are so used to and love it that they don't want to try new paradigm for Phone security. Those who bought iPhone X and using daily are just fine, not complaining but in fact like it. Those who don't have courage to try or not like to spend extra for iPhone X is complaining.  Though one observation is Apple should continue offering slightly improved touchID based iPhones for the next two iteration until FaceID is well entrenched. Let users who are slow in tech adoption take there time to move on to FaceID at own schedule..
