Promise debuts first internal hard drive sleds for new Mac Pro

Storage specialists Promise Technology has unveiled a pair of internal bays for the Mac Pro, designed to mount up to four hard drives internal to the new computer.

Promise Pegasus R4i for new Mac Pro

The Pegasus R4i is a RAID module for the MPX Expansion slot, used within the Mac Pro. It contains four swappable modules that contain four 7200 RPM hard drives from Promise, pre-formatted. The unit is powered by the MPX bay power header.

The Pegasus J2i is a more conventional drive sled. Promise calls it a "direct-attach internal storage enclosure" and will ship with one SATA hard dive pre-formatted, with the ability to add a second drive. It appears at present that the J2i will connect with SATA cables to the internal header in the new Mac Pro, with what Promise calls a "custom internal cable assembly."

Both the drives and the sleds are covered by Promise's three-year warranty.

AppleInsider has requested pricing, with none presently available. The company says that both the modules will be available later in 2019 at the Apple Store, resellers, and Promise's distributors.

There's a rack mount version coming. The RAID would still provide plenty of bandwidth for a file server or archive system.

It's too bad Apple has do heavily deprecated the Server app.

Literally laughing out loud, as I was thinking the exact same thing. Anything associated with the new Mac Pro should be jacked by 50% premium.

I did and built a HP Z8 workstation with as close to possible components and the price came out to $8400. He is correct! try it for yourself.

Lighten up, I think he was referring to the $999 stand. Regardless it was a funny joke. I hope there's going to be an SSD option.

Another apologist post to defend Apple against legitimate criticism. The joke was clearly at the expense of the stupidly expensive display stand.

Why is it so upsetting when people express how much they do or do not want Apple products? Literally nothing Apple makes is necessary in living a long, healthy life. Therefore if someone wants to spend thousands of dollars buying whatever they want, what is the problem? If it was your money and you were paying the bills then and only then would you have a say.

I disagree. I think we should criticize people who spend money in ways we don't approve. I could criticize people who buy lottery tickets. Or who smoke. Or who buy alcohol. Or who take vacations. Or who watch sports. Or who watch TV or listen to music. Or who buy overpriced Apple products. All of these things are condemnable by some measures. We could even pass a constitutional amendment to ban some of the worst items, like the consumption of alcohol. Oh, wait.

You can get various kinds of SSD storage on PCIe cards (SATA, M3, etc), I assume any of those would work here.

What would be great is if a third party would release a new chassis to put the components of the new Mac Pro in (logic board etc....) and allow you to expand it to add modular bays in the front along with more ports. Really don’t know why Apple didn’t add two bays in the front to swap out modular drives or IO etc...

For example a dual SSD drive bay to insert SSD drives straight from a camera to ingest or to clone SSD drives etc...

Given this is design to slot in the PCIe area of the machine why not go and include a PCIe raid and drive interface as well, instead of a header cable to plug in serperately?

Isn't that what the two TB3 ports on top are for?

I wonder if there are needs for both the graphics cards and massive internal storage together, as this would take one card out for 32TB of HDD.

The four-bay one goes in the PCI-e area and has some kind of interface. The latter two-bay one with the custom cable harness looks like it goes above the PCI-e area, in the open space.

Yes you can. $6000+tax can be paid as 2 years no interest ended up $250+tax per month,

Which I think not that bad.

I think Best buy and other retail store will give you 36 months no interest deal for this product.($166.67 + tax per month)

iMac Pro comes with 5K panel but not easy to upgrade anything..

If you want easy upgrade ability then Mac Pro is only choice at this point.

I am waiting on rackmount version.

I wonder next year iMac refresh design will take same XDR monitor case.

I think iMac Pro might take that design and if give us back door open to easy upgrade then I would buy iMac Pro.
