New 3D prints are showing off a trio of sizes for Apple's forthcoming 2020 "iPhone 12," and allege that the company is bringing back some familiar design features.

Images and video of a trio of purported "iPhone 12" mockups have popped up. The three mockups are broadly similar to the current range, with what may be an entry-level model like the iPhone 11, then a Pro version, and a large Pro Max.

Details of the mockups are described in a blog post by Macotakara. The site claims to have received them from sources within Alibaba, but it isn't clear if they were purchased from one of Alibaba's retail aspects, or from other sources within the company.

"From Alibaba Sources," says the blog, "I obtained 3D print mock called 'iPhone 12/5.3 inch' and 'iPhone 12/5.9 inch,' and compared it with current iPhone 11 [and] iPhone 11 Pro."

Each of the new mockups has a flatter side than the current iPhones, however, and this fits with previous claims by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. He's said that the 2020 phones will resemble the old iPhone 4 in terms of its physical chassis. Also not clear if the prints are derived from Kuo's information, or if details have been sourced independently.

Most recently, other supply chain rumors have said that the "iPhone 12" will look like a slimmer and taller iPhone 11.

Macotakara's blog post and the 3D mockups match this. Specifically, Apple has been predicted to make iPhones with 5.4-inch, 6.1-inch, and 6.7-inch screens.

"When I measured the screen size of the 3D print mock of the 'iPhone 12/5.3-inch' model, it was 5.3 inches," says the blog in translation. "The screen size of the rumored next 'iPhone 12' is 5.4 inches... but if it is, it seems to exceed the 3D print mock size. However, if the screen is all the way to the edge of the housing, it may fit into the corner."

The mockup with the 5.3-inch screen has a physical height of 131mm. In comparison, the blog says, the iPhone 11 Pro is 144mm. The mockup's width is 64mm, as compared to the iPhone 11 Pro's 71.4mm.

Similarly, the 5.9-inch screen model is 146mm compared to the iPhone 11 Pro 144mm.

All three phone mockups feature a similar imbalance in the number of microphone and speaker holes as seen on the iPhone 11 range, but here the number varies between models.

"The number of holes on the left side," continues the blog, "seems to be two for 'iPhone 12/5.3-inch', three for 'iPhone 12/5.9' inch, and four for 'iPhone 12 Pro/6.4 inch'."

Notice the different number of microphone or speaker holes.

On top of Macotakara usually uneven success rate, this blog itself says that "the authenticity is unknown."

Apple is expected to stage its regular unveiling of the next iPhones in September, but Ming-Chi Kuo has said there may be four models instead of the normal three.

I'm a big fan of the flat sided designs and the iPhone 4 is a classic.

I'm not sure if it would work on a bigger sized phone in terms of comfort, though.

What I don't like are big side bezels and they look big in this mock-up but that could be due to the nature of the mock-up.

I also think that come 2021, the notch may look a little dated. Right now I'm leaning towards hole punch displays or, if face detection elements are required, having them in the bezel itself.

The notch looks HUGE in 2020.  Apple should go pin-hole or use all the notch real-estate for something...

Hopefully ‘unobstructed’ 1080 or higher playback on the displays of all models.

Yeah everything looks great except dated notch. It makes sense why they would use older design, 5G antenna module haven’t been miniaturized enough to use in a modern iPhone form factor. I hope  that the back wouldn’t be glass, though. We are also going to get much bigger battery also, because why not?

These mockups are terribly executed. What a mess they made of the corners and notches!

I can just barely put my iPhone 11 Pro Max in my pocket and now the 2020 top-of-the-line version is going to be even longer. Since I love purchasing a new iPhone annually, I may have to buy new pants.

About the only thing "new" is the width of the case. The photo lenses don't look like anything plausible, no openings for sound, recharge or dongles. Indistinct bezel ides.   Visual Troll?

Looks like they ran out of cool new design ideas. There are only so many ways to wrap a smart phone. I hope we get to see AR glasses this year and I hope they are touted as a replacement for phones not just a cute add on. Facebook is all on on AR as a replacement for smartphones by 2030.

This quest for length is to me just wrong. Will we see a phone in a few years that is 1ft long and 2 inches wide? Is there some reason for 'going longer' and longer? Please don't say 'screen size' which when you get very long and thin is just silly.
Give me a phone that is the same size and shape as a 4S but with all the latest tech inside and I'll be a happy person.

The square edge in the iPad Pro accommodates the FaceID module, while this approach alone would not work on the iPhone (as the bezels are too thin.) It could buy Apple's engineers enough space to place just the components that can't be placed behind the screen - thus doing away with the bezel.

It seems pretty logical that Apple have a roadmap for removing the bezel, it's just a matter of time before it comes to fruition.

Has never been a problem. Whatsoever.

If you believe they ever intended to design “cool new ideas” into the shell of the device you really don’t know Apple very well. It’s not intended to entertain or alleviate boredom, it’s the frame of the device.

They really are. Amazed that people here are treating these low-rez rough mockups like the final thing. It’s the same pattern every year tho...the real device always looks fine, great, etc, and all the handwringing was for nothing.

I think this is called a ‘notch frenzy’, where lots armchair designers seek a sense of belonging by spewing nonsense about stuff no one cares about.

I can't wait to get flat sides back. I have hated the feel of this rounded form. Fine with the notch. Add a notch at the bottom too, Apple, if it makes the functionality better.

Apple always seems to associate size with cutting edge technology.  Pro gets the largest iPhone models with the latest technologies while the small size iPhone gets the lesser, lower hierarchy of Apple technology.

Remember reading that 5G will require new antennas. The width might have to increase to accommodate them.

While, emotionally, I tend to agree with you, I think the main reason (hopefully) for the square sides will be to perpetuate Apple's apparent move away from a hyperfocus on thin & light towards increased functionality.   Square sides could provide more room for things like a bigger battery and/or (if needed) room for 5G components -- or who knows?   Maybe even an enhanced GPU?

In a phone every millimeter of thickness enables new and improved components.  I doubt Apple will squander that space.
