My amateur projections saying the number of infected will quadruple over the next 2 week (in the USA)...
I really hope I’m wrong.
You may be right and of course that would be very bad, but we as a country desperately need perspective. As of now, if the coronavirus deaths quadruple they will still be less than projected deaths for the flu. It also very likely that the death rate is strongly skewed toward a higher death rate since those who are suffering are mainly the ones being tested.
I only say these things because our panic and overreactions to the coronavirus is causing more problems than the virus itself. We need to take it seriously, but we need to have perspective and patience.
You're skewed.
First, not everyone who has died has been tested -- in Spain in particular they were swamped and a lot of people just died at home, with no test or tie-in to the data.
Second, there is a massive quarantine across the globe, and despite that the deaths rose to 70,000 very quickly. It is only due to the draconian social distancing that we have been able to flatten the curve. COVID-19 is much more contagious than flu and more deadly across age brackets.
...What we're doing is working, thankfully. But if we did nothing the simple math of the death rate speaks for it self, millions would die.
If these are not masks that Apple somehow magically have come up with independently of all other sources, Apple should get out of the queue of HC institutions and countries across the planet desperately clamoring for such masks on the global market. 20 million masks to Apple means some others needy in another country probably would go short of masks. (that is how brutal the global market for masks is right now)
Having the masks on hand, Apple should donate the masks to the US federal pooled resources so they can be distributed to those needing them most, and get out of the business of virtue signaling.
Sourcing 20M masks and designing/shipping a new face shield is now defined as "virtue signalling"?
Sourcing 20M masks for a company that has absolutely no direct use of the masks when the supply situation is CRITICAL for health care personell across the planet - effectively removing that supply from the market is reckless at best. It is clearly used for virtue signaling by Apple.
The only honorable action by Apple is immediately giving up their stock and return it for distribution between HC professionals where they are needed the most – also outside the US.
Apple's business is sourcing materials and getting manufacturers to make products. Steve Jobs historically got Corning to take something they created decades earlier with no perceived market value to Corning and put it into production in a timeframe so short that the iPhone he demoed on stage in January wasn't made of what would be trademarked as Gorilla Glass and the CEO of Corning didn't think was possible to ramp up production for a June launch. Apple—even if you hate them—you have to admit that they are the best at being able to get textiles makers, plastic molders, countless other types of vendors to ship components to manufacturers who can ramp up production based on Apple's direction to make masks produced. For all you know these masks are being created with materials and on assembly lines that would otherwise be used for Apple products. What I don't understand is how someone can be so callous and cruel as to be upset when someone helps others as to only look for some alternative reasoning and try their damndest to make it seem like a bad thing to help others.
Because they ROB THOSE WHO NEED IT THE MOST by removing this stock of masks from the market for their own fucked up virtue signaling distribution!
And no, it is not produced by Apple factories and / or materials.
Add to that. On EVERY UK government presser last week, the journalists brought stories of HC personell not having PPE because it could not be sourced on the international market as American corporations were snatching up large quantities. Entire COUNTRIES are in short supply while Apple sits on 20 million masks that would save lives all over Europe. Now even with the UK PM in ICU.

Whose masks did they steal? Which mask maker or customer did they take these from? I see Tim Cook holding up a prototype for a simple and inexpensive face shield that Apple designed and I've seen countless designs for DIY face masks online, but you're claim is that Tim Cook is a piece of shit who is just stealing property from others in an attempt to "virtue signal." Again, you may want to stay away from that 5G iPhone because of the government control ions that will turn you into a genderless cuck or whatever bat shit crazy conspiracy you think Apple is up to next Fall.
PS: I just remembered. Apple is only good at marketing. /s

Apple was never sitting on 20 million masks. They sourced those from manufacturers in their supply chain.
I saw that the U.S. was expected to need 1.5 billion n95 masks, so 20 million is a rounding error, but good on Apple for a least attempting to make a difference.

Sourced at the expense of others that needed them more. The 20M masks were removed from the market by Apple's acquisition at a time when there is a CRITICAL world-wide demand to protect those who can save lives the most; health care workers!

Ignorance on parade. Apple and its supply partners certainly have business use cases for masks in their production facilities. Apple was able to get these partners in the supply chain to give them the masks, so that they could indeed give them to healthcare workers.
Your irrational need to hate on Apple is a neurosis, and is clouding your judgement here. The Procuring and donating these masks is an infinitely good thing. Get fucking real.

Apple did not produce jack shit yet. They announced the intention to produce SHIELDS, which is perfectly fine.
The contention is over 20M protective MASKS that is CRITICALLY needed elsewhere, and not in Apple's possession.

How ignorant you are. You actually think hospitals and healthcare workers can ‘source’ these things on their own? You think Andrew Cuomo could come up with 20M masks on his own. You think manufacturers are calling hospitals asking how many they need? You think Apple is hogging supplies? What a fool you are. Apple is the master of the supply chain. They know who ,how, and where to get this stuff manufactured anywhere in the world. They have the financial power to cajole factories into action. Hospitals don’t. Governors don’t. Even Trump doesn’t.

There never were 20 million masks in Apple's possession. Most were recently obtained through Apple's supply chain and distributed directly to those with the greatest need in the U.S.
Maybe your complaint is that these are destined for American Medical personnel, rather than "elsewhere", but you certainly fail to acknowledge how distorted the marketplace is for these during this crisis.
Thanks AppleInsider, Apple and Tim Cook! I was taking a walk Saturday with a doctor friend on Saturday who had been treating COVID patients for 10 days straight and mentioned lack of PPE for the care givers in his hospital. When I saw this article I sent it to him. He e-mailed Tim Cook who responded very quickly and his hospital is getting masks and face shields right away. This is what we need to be focussing on in this crisis. How to work together to care for patients and enable care givers. NICE job!!

You don't know that they're even in their possession, for all we know they identified which partners have the masks and are arranging to have them sent where they're critically needed. Regardless, that's the final destination, where they are CRITICALLY needed. They already donated 9 million of their own supply.

There you pretty much described the issue in a nutshell: Apple is removing 20M masks from a very supply constrained market and redistributing them to a hospital that hardly need any of them right now. Meanwhile people and health care personell in Europe are dying in the thousands every day partly for lack of personal protective equipment as it cannot be sourced in the market.
Distributing these maske to their immediate backyard is nothing but virtue signaling.
Nice, but I do think that distributed production is the future, the end of dependency on big Corp is nigh ...
3D printed my own facemasks, looked at thingiverse for designs. I printed with two types of materials: for the filter holder and first part of the mask I printed with PLA to make it sturdy for the rotate click fitting and continued printing with flexible TPU to ensure an optimal fit. Really great result.
And we also need self discipline—if people were acting responsibly this outbreak would already be under control, and we’d also not be perpetually out of foods and supplies and greedy losers charging $40 for a 16oz bottle of ‘Equate’ (Walmart brand) isopropyl alcohol on eBay.
“Price gouging” just means there will be adequate supplies on the shelves. Know why the supply of toilet paper and paper towels disappeared across the country in the first several weeks? Sellers were not allowed to find the price people were willing to pay through price discovery. Supply and demand are fundamentals which remain no matter what is happening in the real world.
Blind faith in free, unconstrained markets is the core cause of the 2008 Great Recession. They gutted regulations and the regulators then, after the banksters went crazy and it all came crashing down even free marketer Greenspan said: "Gee! I wonder how those free markets could have failed so badly?"
That's not to say free markets are bad. But unconstrained free markets tend to fail and crash hard.
But, that was not the case here: nobody was controlling the price of toilet paper but the free market.

The biggest problem we’ve had as a nation is the politicized response of this administration. Even though its been forced to acknowledge the seriousness of this horrible disease, it still refuses to do whatever is required. Still playing politics even now.
to think that this isn’t as serious as medical authorities are saying it is, is willfully criminal.
It’s understood than many deaths from this are going underreported as they are being ascribed to other illnesses, such as pneumonia, which is a major result of Covad-19, and is what many people die from once they get Covid-019.
the minimum number of deaths from this, assuming everything is done properly, and all required medical equipment is readily available, which it is not, is over 100,000. Assuming things wont get too much worse than that, with known shortages of ventilators and other vital equipment, the estimate is around 240,000 deaths. The numbers soar from there with more extreme scenarios, all the way up to an unlikely 4 million. There are normally between 20,000 and 40,000 deaths from the flu every year here, with a delayed vaccine in 2017 resulting in 80,000 deaths. There is no vaccine for this, and likely wont be one for around 18 months, with medical researchers stating that that would be a miracle. I hope that time line will be shorter, but it’s not very likely. Even the US company that has a candidate that is going to testing right about now, has said that it will still take 18 months, assuming it works, something that we don't know.
We still have some southern and Midwest governors refusing to instate social distancing rules. Rules that are enforced. They say that there aren’t enough cases in their states yet to do that. Stupidity unbounded! They don't seem to understand that the best time to do that is when there are few, or even no cases. So they’ll wait for more advice from the White House, they say, before instituting these rules.
This whole response makes me sick, and not with the virus, because my wife and I are being very careful, and not going out.
Those things you are so concerned about are State responsibilities, not the Federal government.
What I find so bizarre is those who have been the biggest critics of this President are also the same ones who are demanding more of an authoritarian response from the Feds. Those two trains of thought don’t run on the same track.
LOL... No! Those things became the responsibility of state governments only because the federal government failed to do its job and state governors stepped into the void left to save the lives of their people.
And too, No! Every action by the federal government is not "an authoritarian response" LOL... A core function of the federal government, one even classical Libertarians agree with, is protecting the safety of its people. Here, Trump's thieves failed to fulfill their responsibility. Instead of protecting the lives of the people they protected their own assets in the stock market and Trump's chances at re-election (both of which are failing anyway).
Sorry, but blind ideology usually fails -- especially when it is misused to justify a political agenda.

Right, so you didn't actually watch the video or read the article; fair enough, I know clicking through is tricky for some people.
As well as the procurement of masks, Cook also mentioned that Apple design engineers have created a new mask that is faster to manufacture, is easier to ship in bulk, and can be assembled in minutes. That was actually clearly stated in the article.
The rest of your post is made up of the usual 'maybes' and 'probablys' so you clearly don't have the information on how Apple is procuring the masks.
One thing that these companies can do better than hospitals, individual trusts and one or two governments run by incompetent nincompoops who claim to be top-notch wheeler-dealers, is negotiate better prices when buying by the million, which health trusts cannot do, and the companies that run hospitals would rather not do. Because believe it or not, the prices on these vital items have rocketed since the virus broke. That's what happens when the market is allowed to run free; you need experienced companies run by people like Cook, who know how to bleed the most out of the supply chain.
What America needs to do is mandate that these medicines, medical equipment and PPE are manufactured in the US or atleast impose 400% Tariffs. Trump is right on the need to roll back globalism which is why the globalist billionaire controlled Democrats fight him and are wrong. Likewise Similar tariffs should be Applied to electronics like the iPhones. China can not be trusted to operate fairly or transparently.
Sorry, but you are 40 years late. Globalization is a fact and it's here to stay. We tried the go it alone strategy with test kits and it was a total fiasco.
The fact that Trump has been fiddling since this virus was announced back in 2019 doesn't absolve him of responsibility.
Trump has done the greatest job. That’s why his Ratings are through the roof. Better than even the Batchelor. Obama was never that good.
You should try listening to news rather than propaganda.

PS: I just remembered. Apple is only good at marketing. /s
I saw that the U.S. was expected to need 1.5 billion n95 masks, so 20 million is a rounding error, but good on Apple for a least attempting to make a difference.
Congratulations for winning The Dumbest Thing Said On the Internet Today award!
Your irrational need to hate on Apple is a neurosis, and is clouding your judgement here. The Procuring and donating these masks is an infinitely good thing. Get fucking real.
The contention is over 20M protective MASKS that is CRITICALLY needed elsewhere, and not in Apple's possession.
You are truly psychotic in your hatred of Apple.
Maybe your complaint is that these are destined for American Medical personnel, rather than "elsewhere", but you certainly fail to acknowledge how distorted the marketplace is for these during this crisis.
You don't know that they're even in their possession, for all we know they identified which partners have the masks and are arranging to have them sent where they're critically needed. Regardless, that's the final destination, where they are CRITICALLY needed. They already donated 9 million of their own supply.
"Virtue signaling" — JFC you are dense.
Distributing these maske to their immediate backyard is nothing but virtue signaling.
I printed with two types of materials: for the filter holder and first part of the mask I printed with PLA to make it sturdy for the rotate click fitting and continued printing with flexible TPU to ensure an optimal fit.
Really great result.

You should try listening to news rather than propaganda.

Excuse me, but your ideology is showing...
