El Capitan vers. 4 (updated images inside)

Posted:
in Future Apple Hardware edited January 2014
I had a chance to play today... everyone still recuperating from being off the week of the Fourth.

Okay, here's the idea, the frosted emac type plastic on the same basic ElCapitan shape but with polished metal handles. (chromed)

Sort of a nod to the ipod and emac...

Also, firewire and two USB ports available from a "push-and-pop-down" door. (The door would come down inside the front panel.)

Eject buttons on CD trays ala Xserve.

Okay let's here from those critics. <img src="graemlins/smokin.gif" border="0" alt="[Chilling]" />

And here it is...

If the 2nd bay allows a full height drive rather than a useless Zip, I'll take two of 'em....

Actually you know what sprung to mind when I saw that...prosumer G4.

I still think the next (high end) PM will be similar to the Xserve.

looks like compaq's take on el capitan.

remember, all that's keeping apple going at this point is style...

    that ain't got none.

Wouldn't this be the fourth incarnation of El Capitan? Trailing blue/white G3, Original G4 and Quicksilver G4.

I think it looks nice. Great job.

    that actually looks really good.

    just a couple of things:

    1. Might look a little more balanced if the handles were at a 45 degree angle like the current el cap case. still it might be a refreshing change if they were arranged like in the photo, or maybe even having them at 0 degrees - sticking straight out horizontally in front and behind.

    2. If the handles are angled, there should be some provision for side to side balance on the bottom ones. One way is molding a flat area at the points the case touches the ground, which would have plastic or rubber feet attached.

    3. The handles might look and work better if they were more machined alum look instead of chrome. It wouldn't show fingerprints and wouldn't get scratched. That would alse tie the looks to the Xserve and the TiBook as well. You'd have to modify the speaker cone and apple logo to match tho.

    4. The buttons in the center of the drive bays are needless. The QS cases do without it.

    5. It might clean it up a bit if the Apple logo was actually on the speaker cone, maybe anodized on in white or a darker/lighter shade of metal.

Whats the little panel below the speaker? Also, where are the front mounted USB and Firewire ports?

This looks good, and would be easy to modify the current LCD lineup to match.

Gosh, did an Appleinsider Moderator imply that current 'Tower' specs aren't all they could be?

PS. Not a bad mock up. A little squat, dumpy and inelegant. But I like the chrome touches and the chrome handles and the frosted colouring is okay...

"No, Mr. Ives. You're son isn't fat; he's just husky."

Screed ...I want taller, thinner, less curvy on the side. Given current rumors, there's probably more metal trim to it, too.

Too short! Jonathan's right; looks too PC-ish. Needs some real clean-upping. To tell the truth, a G4 Sphere would be pretty cool. But I don't think that's coming for a while.

Looks like someone took the el capitan case and crushed it vertically. Now it's fat and short.

While the El Capitan design is a great design, its getting kind of old though. I mean, its 3 1/2 years old.

Its time for a major update in this area.

Of course, if we get the usual 100 MHZ speed bump, maybe its not worth updating.

You would not want to confuse the consumer into thinking its actually a new machine, would you?

It'll be either a new Xserve stylie metal case, or a colour tweak of the quicksilver, maybe with some small mods (front ports?)

This looks fake, the reflection of the Apple logo and speaker on the bottom chrome handle is incorrect. The reflection exceeds 180 degrees which is impossible. The camera and foreground would show in the chrome reflection.

Probably rendered chrome handles (with the case as the environment for reflections) photoshopped with a Quicksilver case.

    damn right I did.

Let's get something straight: i'm shallow. The only thing that keeps me using Apple computers is the fact that, well, chicks start conversations with me about my computer.

Titanium is one sexy mother****er of a metal.

The fact that i still don't know how to use Windows is another reason, probably. but the whole 'shallow aesthete' thing is easier to say.

Yes, we know this isn't alleged to be what Apple's going to release. It's called a mockup - that's the key word. Someone's design. . .

Concerning the case itself, the poster definitely gets points for effort, yet I don't think Apple would give us something like that.

Judging by the width of the drive bay doors as compared to the current QuickSilver, that mockup is about 14 1/4 inches tall (vs current height of 17).

(Okay, okay... I'm only posting this again because I'm feeling crabby that my original thread for the Power Mac G1945 got locked! )

People who want a computer that's spherical should be forced to do some space planning in an architectural firm for a few weeks sometime instead of dreaming about their own Transformers doll-festooned bedrooms.
