I hope a steely eyed audience, one completely impervious to the charms of the RDF, shows up to greet Stevie at this upcoming MacWorld. Anything short of truly competetive prices on significantly enhanced machines deserves to get booed off the stage -- loudly, and embarassingly so. And by improvement I mean real improvement: powermacs that justify their cost with brute number crunching power, DDR, faster firewire for all models, properly priced (pre-DVI level) powerbooks, a G4 consumer 'book' of some kind, at least 1Ghz on ALL (including bottom line iMac) desktops, CHEAP iMacG3's, etc etc...
Steve has enjoyed far too much acclaim for far too little hardware offering in recent months. He needs to be taken down a few notches.
Nick is just pissed off that Apple is treating him like a nobody and is trying to throw as much dirt at Apple as he possibly can to show that he has some weight in the community.
I think it's pretty obvious that the PowerMac line is due for an update. iMac sales are slow and will most likely receive an incentive to improve sales before they're updated.
[quote] Nick de Plume is awfully upset about not being allowed to get a press pass for MWNY. So, what does he do? He posts a rumor article - this time with quite a negative position, and asks Apple to be allowed because the rumor sites can cause negative press for Apple too.

I really hope this is the case.
There is a logical inconsistency between his reasons for no powermacs, and new iMac announcements. I hope he has fallen for some SJ Black-Op Disinformation....
Guys. Relax. This COULD be just more disinformation from Apple to the rumor sites. It's happened before. This could be Steve Jobs' "f uck you" to Think Secret just before he goes on stage and announces some kick ass products (one of which could be a PowerMac G4 that will ship in three weeks).
I'll be in the audience at the keynote waiting patiently. Either way, it'll be a fun time.
No, this is not Apple disinformation. If it were, Apple would have to prematurely end the new Crystal clear savings. Has Apple ever done that before?
Seybold or MacWorld Paris might be better suited for a Power introduction.
I think Steve could not announce new PowerMacs and leave the stage alive, if he had something up his sleeve that would soothe the attendees's murderous natures. So we should be wondering:
Cnet is reporting the same thing, though they quote Nick at one point - makes me wonder which one is the real source.
I wasn't planning on a pMac until August/September anyway - so it's no skin off mine - but I think this will make for a dismal showing in NY. It's not as if those of us who'd hold off until after MW won't hold off even longer now... it's idiocy.
We can tell ourselves that something good is around the corner, but this actually doesn't bode well for that to be true - they have 2 audiences a year this size. Smells like a more modest than anticipated update in August - regardless of what's being reported. You can spin MW as a pro-consumer show, but showing high-end pro hardware to consumers isn't to get them to buy (well, some of them) - its a confidence game... it's purely a credibility booster, sliding them into the low-end model with a bit more ease and deflecting eyes and thoughts from the pricetag in the shadow of what the "pros" use.
Sad sad. Hoping for the best...
EDIT
You know, maybe it's not idiocy. I said it myself - we'll wait even longer. They know they have us, and we have no other options (I'd go back to Linuz before I went back to NT). Therein lies the problem. Perhaps we're angry with ourselves for backing a horse that doesn't run when we snap our fingers.
You know, I agree that DePlume puts out some decent articles and product profiles (a la Jaguar series of late), but since WHEN is ThinkSecret this Holy Grail of inside information?? It's like someone who has held himself above Ryan Meader (cuz that's really hard to do) suddenly posts a rather severe set of predictions and everyone is like
"OH MY GOD...if NICK says it's true, it's GOT to be right. Fvck Apple, let's boo Steve off the stage maaan."
Wake up homey-G's. Whether this is Nick DePlume being pissed about a press pass, or Apple feeding him BS or something else - THE GUY KNOWS SQUAT. Just like RAILhead, just like Architosh, Geek.com and all the rest. They all think they have these amazing sources and none of them do. It is in their interest to post all these borderline sensationalist predictions - how else are they going to get traffic? And don't tell me there's consequences for that; there is none. Will you guys suddenly stop reading ThinkSecret if he turns out to be totally wrong?
No. You'll forget all about it after a few [weeks] and then come his MWSF predictions this crap will start all over again - in one direction or another.
I would be totally [BAFFLED] if Apple didn't significantly update the Power Mac line sometime during the next 60 days. Whether the announcement is at MWNY and the release in August, or some other combination I have no idea...but chances are very good they're going to update the machines...period.
Just chill out and let's see what happens OK? God...people get so friggin worked up over nothing in this forum it's beyond belief.

Guys, chill. This is how it is, there is nothing we can do about it. We are a small percentage of the Apple buying public. Apple doesn't work their days around trying to fool the people on AppleInsider.
3 weeks to wait for a cool unveiling of the Power Mac at a special event is worth waiting for.
Does nobody remember that there was an announcement of an announcement in August together with nVidia at WWDC? I'm sure we'll see 'nForce' chips in every PM next month.
NVIDIA revolutionizes desktop PC performance with the introduction of the NVIDIA nForce(TM) Platform Processing Architecture. From stunning 3D graphics and awesome Dolby Digital 5.1 audio, to screaming system and memory performance, nForce integrated motherboard solutions make PCs roar with unparalleled performance. I would be more likely to believe him if he wouldn't have said: "How are we so certain that MacWorld won't bring new towers? Use common sense! Just look at the Apple promotion..."
If he would have just said: ?a really good source told me?, I may have been more likely to believe him... but having said what he did, made his article just another opinion, and we have enough of those here at AI
Maybe we'll get new Power Macs at MWNY, maybe we won't. But the logic of the Think Secret article is far from compelling, and contradictory when it comes to the 17" iMac.
We've all heard that sales of Power Macs are way down, but I've heard nothing about where the inventories are. Sales have been slow enough long enough that Apple's had probably geared down, if not stopped, production of the old Power Mac line some time ago.
Current Power Mac inventories could already be quite low, with "Crystal Clear" simply meant to help move what's left. You can bet that if new Power Macs are announced at MWNY, they won't be ready to ship immediately (or, in classic Apple fashion, they'll have way too few ready to go and quickly slam into massive backorders). The already-depleted inventory of old Power Macs could still be sold after such an announcement to anyone who's in a hurry, or who wanted to save a few bucks.
Why not stretch the promotion until to August 12, only for the current Power Macs, even if the new Power Macs have been announced at MWNY? I don't think anything can be read into the August 12 date at all.
iMacs, however... There have been plenty of stories about those piling up in warehouses. Even if Apple cuts the price to help get those inventories moving, it doesn't make sense to confuse the issue with a new iMac model until more of the old stock has been unloaded.
Good reasons to believe or disbelieve in new Power Macs at MWNY would have more to do with the readiness of the hardware, not trying to second guess the meaning of promotional offers.

My 'source' if you call it that was told this very thing this morning from Apple. They worded it as "underwhelming".

What very thing? The stuff from the ThinkSecret Article?

There most definenlty will be new PowerMacs at MWNY.
Promotions? Deception. Apple is just trying to make us think it's safe to buy old PowerMacs.
Remember iWalk? This is the same sort of thing. Apple is toying with us again.

Yes, on the powerbook about 2 years ago or so.
