While I have no REAL idea if this is true or not here is something that makes me think Nick over at ThinkSecret was fed a line of BS...

From one of my favorite sites (www.xlr8yourmac.com)

"Last month Powerlogix announced G4 7455 chip based 800MHz and 1GHz CPU upgrades for the G4/AGP (100MHz bus and 133MHz bus) towers and G4 Cubes. A reader sent an email that a Sonnet AD in the August issue of Macworld notes they also are announcing 800MHz/1GHz CPU upgrades for AGP Macs."

Sorry but if Powerlogix AND Sonnet are gonna start shipping 1Ghz CPU upgrades for PowerMac G4 systems (that for the most part have NEVER had a CPU upgrade path open to them before) then Apple MUST have something ready to go for MWNY. I can't imagine Apple wouldn't have something 'a step above' the upgrade card makers.

I hope so, but if nothing better is available it could be that Mot only has 1Ghz parts or something marginally faster, 1.1-1.2Ghz, same FSB, possibly MPX166. Not a dramatic improvement; they'd still find themselves behind the curve.

just imagine in two months, when some of you lucky bastards will be reading over these topics and laughing as you reply to them on your brand new G5's...

    According to <a href="http://www.cube-zone.com/"; target="_blank">The Cube-Zone</a> (July 10th blurb) the current line of PowerMac's have been EOL'ed.

That could mean very good news about MWNY or that could mean Apple is hip deep in inventory. Who knows...

Interesting; but if there's a glut in the channel, Apple could just be cutting production so as not to glut it further. One of the advantages of calling an Apple Event is that you can do it on relatively short notice (the press usually gets their invites three days to a week in advance), so Apple can watch the channel and time the announcement carefully.

Heck, if they offer some discount that makes the current PMs fly off the shelves (free Bugatti with every purchase!) they might even be able to announce at MWNY.

My biggest reason for attaching credibility to this particular rumor is that if I believe it I'm much less likely to be disappointed by the keynote, and I can put on my consumer hat and judge it in that context.

There actually has been a substantial upgrade of the original G4.

    I have a Rev. B. G4/450. It has a 100 MHz bus, 2x AGP, 3 PCI slots and 4 SDRAM slots.

Some changes from the Original El Capitan: Go from G3 to G4 Graphite stylings, then from Graphite to QuickSilver (new front panel) with new back panels to match new mobos. The internal drive bay areas were reorg'd to allow more drives than El Capitan originally shipped.

Some changes from the original G4: Faster bus to 133 Mhz, 4x AGP, Gigabit Copper Ethernet, 4 PCI slots (added one), 3 SDRAM slots (removed one), "custom" powered speaker port (major whiners) and now the Apple Pro speaker port, SuperDrives and no Zip drive any more.

If anyone was waiting on a new G4 and using a Beige G3 Power Mac you have other issues than newer G4 envy.

Until this rumor hit, I hadn't heard any mention of excessive PM inventory. Then, suddenly, everyone was talking about it like an absolute. Is there a surplus? Are there any retailers here that can give some insight?

All of this makes me, once again, wish that Apple was a bit more open about their HW strategy. This cloak and dagger routine gets old after a while. Really, it interferes w/purchasing decisions. My brother was ready to buy a dual gig last month, but, w/MW so close, he decided to wait.

MW is not a rumor. We all know when and where it is going to happen. But, if no PM is released, it will put him in a hard spot. It would SUCK to buy a PM shortly b4 they are updated, but the 'Apple Event' is purely rumor...it might never happen. Maybe the PMs will come out at Paris or wait until Jan. Who knows?!

For many years now, Mac fans have looked to the big shows for announcements. Even tho we didn't know what was coming, we knew something was. Now we can't even be sure of that. Like I said, it makes purchasing decisions very difficult.

-EDIT- It is also ridiculous that this rumor is gaining credence because more sites are reporting it. TS posts original --&gt; Cnet quotes TS --&gt; MacMinute&MacNN quote Cnet. Only SpyMac is saying 'wait and see'

MacBidouille reports that it is not possible for dealers to order the G4 933 or 1000. They also report that iBook stocks are low.

I find that hard to believe, just one day after Apple launched a promo on them. <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Now the Frenchies chime in, and things go round the cycle again....maybe they are coming? Who knows? I feel like I'm watching the old Batman teevee show.

You know, I may be reading this differently than everyone else, but I'm kinda optimistic about Think Secret's report of delayed Power Macs. He states in the article that:

[quote] Our sources confirm Apple will probably announce new G4 towers in three different speeds in excess of 1.2GHz in a special product announcement next month <hr></blockquote>

Now, it seems like everyone on this board reads this as, new Powermacs in August, with high end barely over 1.2 Ghz. I read this as, new Powermacs in August, with the low end over 1.2Ghz. Read that sentence again, and you see what I mean. If that's the case, and the Powermacs start at 1.2 Ghz, then I think you all should be patient and be happy when August comes around.

Does Apple ever have a special event to just speed bump a product? No. Every time Apple has a special event there something revolutionary about it.</strong><hr></blockquote>So the question is, will there be a Special Event®? Just because they don't release a new PowerMac at MWNY doesn't mean there'll be a Special Event.

As I remember, at MWSF 2002 you were the one who predicted no new PowerMacs. What did they do? A couple weeks later, they press-released the dual ghz. No special event, because it wasn't a major upgrade.

What's to say they won't do the same this time with a 1.2 Ghz?

No MWNY release != Special event.

Sorry, we're all too busy wailing and quailing to notice such fine print now.

After the cry to the heavens, we still have the gnashing of the teeth, and the rending of garments, not to mention the cursing of Steve.

It will take a few more days before anyone's ears become unpacked from hot wax of our melting expectations.

Not at all. Read the <a href="http://store.apple.com/Catalog/US/Images/CrystalClearPDFCoupon.pdf"; target="_blank">Promo PDF</a>. It specifies savings on 800, 933, and Dual 1GHz Powermacs. If they're not readily available is not Apple's problem. (In fact, it's to their benefit).

It's one method of clearing out the last Powermacs in the reseller channel.

Screed ...still confused on whether we'll get an announcement next week or several weeks later.

As for the iMacs, which are definitely overstocked, I don't see what Apple could do other than cutting prices at a loss.

If no new PowerMac's are into'd, then the already weak sales of the PowerMac will effectively drop to ZERO.

Nobody has commented on my suggestion and the more I read the more it make sense to me; that if the delay in intorduction of new Powermacs is delayed until August, it is because they NEED Jaguar.

I am convinced that this is the most likely reason, and I don't think Steve would want all the press to review his flagship machines with 10.1.5 becuase it (10.1.5) makes the machine look much slower than it really is. If I was Steve Jobs there is no way I would launch them with 10.1.5 I would want the press and not just the Mac press to rave about these new machines.

Think about the speed jump that will be apparent if we get either a G4 1.5ghz with DDR and JAGUAR, or a G5 with the same.

When you think about it, Steve can't let these machines to go to market with 10.1.5 what he wants and Apple need is to make these new machines a revelation.
