Yeah, but when the PowerBooks do come out, they'll be getting one major speed bump. 800MHz-1.2GHz!!! Must be 0.13-micron G4s, and you now what that means. 1.6GHz PowerMacs.

800MHz-1.2GHz is a 50% jump. Not bad. 1GHz low-end and 1.2GHz high-end would allow the iBook to hit 900MHz or maybe even 1GHz. Cool!

I've lost all interest in towers!

I wish there was a way to know if we were getting new Powerbooks soon. I could buy one right now, but if Ghz models are released next week I'd be so annoyed. Months I can handle, but days would be torture.

TBox: So you're an architectural 3D modeler? Super cool.

I would love a 1.2 Ghz with a Firewire drive and a second 15" LCD panel, since those FormZ tool windows take up so much space. If they're pushing 1.2GHz I agree that it means that .13 micron fab is here. Hopefully better. There's no excuse for Motorola not to have better.

I know I'll want that extra performance to run FormZ 4. I don't think my current 500Mhz has the punch to do it.

Would you prefer a small speed bump now, or a MAJOR upgrade in 4 months? You can't have both.

That's not the way Apple operates.

Apple isn't that smart yet apparently.

Apparently they want Dell to kill them.

More frequent updates are GOOD. Witness OS X.

You cannot update hardware every 3 months, it makes for high R&D, high manufacturing costs and high component costs. Also when you have processors increasing in speed like Mot's, if you update every three months they will be 25MHz speed bumps!

If they are going to get to 1.2 then I think they must be testing 0.09 G4's because the .13 would be too hot.

I'm not trying to rag on anyone, but every time talk of a new powerbook revision comes up, someone has to say how it will be too hot to handle. Well I hate to tell you, but apple will release an updated powerbook and it will be more powerful and they will have figured out a way to deal with the temp and fan volume...just like they always do...

    "just like they always do?"

have you ever used ANY titanium?

well, obviously you live in alaska and so are not concerned about this things. anyway, But for people who live in warmer places (california, miami, Mallorca..) heat and, consequently, fan noise is a serious problem for a laptop.

Add to that poor wireless reception and fragility and you've got nothing but a bad notebook (it may be a great computer but NOT a good laptop)

Yeah to more frequent updates, beside speed and price, the other big problem with macs is they look very stale on the shelf very quickly, more frequent updates would cure that to a large degree and the buy-wait cycle that Apple execs always complain about. It would also mitigate the other two factors (speed and price) to a large degree (if the machines were no more than 3 months out of date, instead of up to a year!)

PS. A .13u G4 would comfortably go to 1.2Ghz and higher, adn it would fit in a notebook. Just look at what the wintelon guys have to tame, it can be done.

I have £3200 I'm willing to spend now. It's doubtful I'll have it after Christmas as stuff happens. So I'd prefer Apple has it now on a new Ti1000

I don't see why we can't have a modest update now and a brand new model in 4 months. 1Ghz G4s and Radeon 9000s are drop in parts.

MacWarehouse UK have 47 Powerbooks in stock, 21 of which are 'value added' with extra RAM or a Sony Clie. Similar offers are at the US store too.

    My guess is next tuesday.

yeah, I still think we will see updated PowerBooks within a month. Also, just because they are "testing" 1.2 GHz processors doesn't mean they plan to ship them anytime soon. Just like they maybe are "testing" the GPULs.

I guess we will have a "minor" update (to 1 GHz) now, and the next update (to 1.2 GHz and beyond) in the spring 2003 - about 5-6 months after the october update. All makes sense. DON'T expect 3 month intervals - simply not gonna happen!

what do you mean by good laptop? If you mean good for computing while it is sitting on your bare legs (lap) then you are right, it is too hot. If you are saying it is not a good portable computer (a good notebook, Apple NEVER claims it to be a laptop at all) then are just a moron. The objective reviews of every site, and mag (even PC ones), along with the interest in the ti on this site and others, not to mention the incredible success of the machine all prove you could not be more wrong about it being a good portable.

But like I said if you really meant it sucks if you want to use it bare against your lap then you are totally right.

    FlashGordo,

when i started this thread just wanted to remark that IMO the current titanium is probably a little bit too slave of its own skin.

"almost a perfect notebook and a desktop replacement" i wrote. But if you compare to previous Powerbooks (read Pismo) you'll notice new flaws have been introduced with the new gorgeous enclosure. I summarized them in the 1)2)3)4) points.

that's why i kept saying that while in some aspects the titanium is a breakthru piece of technology, in others represents a step backwards regarding mobile computing.

then my again my proposal, isn't it posible to redesign it -perphaps using the same thickness and materials of the icebook- for the new powerbook to adress those problems and become a really great mobile/laptop and powerful computer?

By the way...the EDU discounts end today, a lot of rebates end next Monday and Refurbished Machines are gone from the Apple Site.

Have the current TiBooks been EOLed? What about stock at Major retailers? Has anyone checked this? Mac Zone has 59 of the 667 Mhz and 242 of the 800 Mhz. While I want the PowerBook Revved now, I would imagine that Apple will wait for these units to be sold.

I'm pretty sure EOL only happens on new models, not speedbumps.

I've been checking retailers and the 667 seems to have offers with it everywhere. It's the same here and the US. Macwarehouse UK was offering extra RAM and a Sony Clie last week, this week its an M505.

I don't believe Apple will wait for retailers to be out of stock - after all they have the money.

I also don't see Apple waiting till January. Sales must be dropping as we all expect an update, but there has been no 'buy now' statement from them like there was with the PowerMac.

    I'm still hopeful.

I am not disagreeing that there are some problems with the ti. Those include heat, fan, paint, etc... I am disagreeing with your comment several posts above that states it is a bad notebook. The evidence already stated in my reply above shows that you are wrong in that assertion.

Now on to your current point that all problems would be solved by putting it in the ibook case. Would not that be a step back also? Now that they have gotten us here they just need to solve the problems, not give up and go backwards. We are not going back to the horse and buggy b/c cars are noisy, dangerous, and pollute too much, we are just going to make quieter, safer, more efficient cars. This is the same with the powerbook. We have come this far, we have solved this many problems, and we have just a few left. I'd rather we solve them than quit and go backwards. Just quitting and doing things the easy way is how the PC world does it, so you can get a VAIO or a Satellite or even an iBook if you want, I and the majority of others that want a true portable pro computer will be happy waiting for Apple to perfect and innovate the tibook.

Not quite. Often a model is EOL'd if a new one is coming soon, it's to keep people like MacMall and others from ordering a product that will be updated within a week or so which would mean Apple would have to offer price protection to MacMall for the difference in price after the new models come out. The goal is to have as little product out there when a refresh happens.
