BTW, While we may all hate Moto for one reason or another, let us not forget they are masters at embedded technology. Im sure that had a a lot to do with why we got G4s into such small portables.
Sure, IBM is making amazing low power G3s now, but thats also a tried and true proc that was made 4-5 years ago. The PPC970 is a different beast entirely.
For the G4 (7400): in desktops by Sept 1999, and we saw it one and a half years later in the TiBook (Jan 01) [OK, well it was really the 7410 in the PBs, but close enough]

Yes, it was the 7410, which also appeared in the low-end PowerMacs at the same time. So the 7410 was released for laptops and PowerMacs at the same time. It was the first G4 to be manufactured at .18µ.
I don't know of any reason why they couldn't do the same with the new .13µ 970.
My 800Mhz PowerBook shipped today. If a new model is released tomorrow, I am going to go nuts. I will call Apple and DEMAND a $300 rebate at the very least.

Yeah, I'm sure that'll work really well.
I was thinking about a PC laptop just to fool around with, in case I need to someday need to know Win XP for a future job. But I just can't bring myself to blowing $1,399 + on a laptop that I won't really like, when I can put it into a more graceful, nice Mac.

Just get Virtual PC with Windows XP Professional. Probably can't play games, but most other software is supposed to work good. Plus, in Virtual PC you can undo any additional software installs if you don't like how they turn out. Much better then regular Win XP.
That's what I'm planning, once these new PBs come out. Already looking forward to logging into the office network from home/coffee shop/etc.
It will, it's part of their Apple Store policy.

Oh, I guess I missed that $300 rebate policy. Care to provide a link to it?
It is now October 15th in New York...and nothing. I'll tell you this- the company nerver fails to disapoint. If they think that they have broken me and that now I am gonna settle for a 32 meg video card, and what not for 3 grand-NO WAY. THat IBM 64 bit news was nice-but need I that NOW! Those of you in my same position ya gotta hold out! Off to E-Bay !
Its now 9.00am in Frankfurt and the Apple store is still open. I suppose I need to wait for a few hours before kicking myself for believing our Apple contact. How about I get him to meet in a chat room so we can all ask where the new machines (laptops) are.
Damn, Damn, Damn. I could have been using a new ibook my now if I had not listed to him.
Sorry everyone for the false alarm.
Alf. - he turns off his Mac and enrols in a retraining course as a DEC PDP specialist.
Is the real reason so many people here are hoping for a speed bump is so that they can then pick up the current 800 model for cheaper?
