This year I actually want to join in the MWSF fray a bit, since I have recently stumbled upon a decent source of information. She hasn't been too eager to share information, but if I am reading her comments correctly I think the iMacs and the Power Macs are the most likely candidates. The PowerBooks and iBooks were just recently updated so that's out, and I don't personally care about the eMac one way or another since I think it's a kludge but I am banking on

1 GHz 17" iMac (maybe with more RAM standard),

    1 GHz 15" iMac,

and 800 on the low-end combo drive machine.

2 x ~1.5 GHz (.13µ SOI part) at the top with the 200 MHz MPX bus,

    2 x ~1.3 GHz w/ 200MHz MPX

2 x 1.25 GHz G4 at the bottom with current setup

From there, basically no updates until MWNY announcements.

    AND

A new digital device (I have no details other than it seemed a pretty obvious inference to me at the time).

    But that's just me.

I'd be in the market for one of these two. I've been itching to replace my Bondi Rev.A iMac and have come close to hitting the "confirm order" button several times. But I have told myself that I would wait until I can get a 1Ghz consumer machine. I have a feeling that MWSF will be just my occasion.

"In related news, an anonymous source reports that Apple France will be rebroadcasting Steve Jobs' MacWorld San Francisco's Keynote at the Pompidou Center in Paris, France at the same time and is inviting customers. No other details currently available, but such a rebroadcast appears not to be a routine event."

\tJust another bit of info for MWSF. This along with the fact that Woz is going to be there. Not counting all of the other rumors around the net, especially the 970 rumors. Ummm... Looks like something big is up. Something new...

    Maybe Steve is retiring.

I don't think he will retire until Apple is back on top in terms of performance. If you want to go it is better to go on a high. Getting the 970 series into Powermacs is going to be something of a high. The 970 will deal with the speed issue for most of us, and especially those of us who find the GUI sluggish.

They have made these satellite broadcasts before but I am not sure when, but I don't think they did it for anything big... or was it for OS X?

I've said it before and I'll say it again, the 15" iMac is going away along with the CRT iMac.

    Consumer desktop lineup at MWSF:

    eMac 17" CRT 1GHz/128/40/gForce4MX32/Combo\t\t$999

    eMac 17" CRT 1GHz/256/60/gForce4MX32/Superdrive\t$1,299

    iMac 17" LCD 1GHz/256/60/gForce4MX32/Combo\t\t$1,399

    iMac 17" LCD 1GHz/256/80/gForce4MX64/Superdrive \t$1,699

    iMac 19" LCD 1GHz/256/100/ATiRadeon900064/Superdrive\t$1,999

1 GHz G4s across the line, all iMacs are widescreen, and nice clean price points from 1K to 2K. Just watch, it'll happen.

    Eh, your speculation is optimistic.

I don't think Apple's willing to part with a 1 GHz G4, 17 inch LCD, DVD/CD-RW and everything else in an iMac for $1400.

    800 MHz / 17" LCD / 256 MB / 60 GB / GeForce4 MX / CD-RW - $1299 <-- seems more reasonable to me.

And I doubt it's worth making the necessary changes to put an ATI chip in one trim and nVidia in the others. It'll be one or the other. And I think Apple still wants to keep a fair balance between nVidia and ATI in its product lines. Only one Power Mac comes with nVidia graphics in addition to the eMacs and iMacs. My bet is GeForce4 MX across the board and no major changes to the hardware other than speed, RAM, storage bumps. The screen issue, I don't know.

I hope that you are right it looks good and makes sense. Do you think they will have bluetooth and what about bus-speed?

    Rookie with a bold prediction.

I say MWSF 2003 is all about Bluetooth, iSync and Rendevous. In order for this to work I also believe we will see the entire apple product line updated. Some will be very marginal updates, some will be substantial but none will be left behind. Built-in Bluetooth for everybody! This would also explain the no OS9 booting as of Jan 03 in all NEW models. (yea I know about the quark and education models in June)

Also, notice that MS is releasing thier $19.95 version of the iApps on Jan 7th? But Apple doesn't have a Tivo-like app you say. Hmmm.

Trash me now and praise me later.

Unless we hear the Sony and Phylips are going to be there, possibly some other non-traditional vendors that have announced plans for Rendevous, and have products to show, I dont think that blue tooth is worthy of center stage. Apple needs something to showcase it with, preferably with an outtside vendor showing off a new product as well. Say for example the Sony/Ericson phone, and maybe an AirPort/Rendevous conpatable AV Amp from Phylips. The phones are there, but I dont think Steve can do much more than rehash what he has already said about them. I doubt that the appliances are ready yet, expect to see early ones this summer.

As for Blue Tooth, it would be better for Apple to integrate it into the Airport cards, so that they can sell more cards. There is already a healthy market for these in the existing user base of G4's, iBooks PB's, and iMacs. If they have the 805g version ready then the card would be even more attractive. I seriously doubt thta they will get one upgrade just becouse the computer hase bluetooth.

This has probably been noted somewhere in this thread and I missed it, but is the Keynote Tuesday or Wednesday? Either way I'm sure my contact will spill it on the day of their announcement (even if before the keynote) but I'm just trying to figure out if I'll be in a place where I can watch the keynote.

I bet regardless of which hardware items are updated, this MW will still be more about software than hardware. I forsee mostly iterative changes unless something miraculous happens regarding the Power Macs.

It does seem kind of stupid... then again it wouldn't make sense to force people to buy a new airport station and card ($400) to add a $5 chip.

If some sort of of innovation that requires bluetooth is announced, how can you only update say the iMac, and leave the rest behind. I'm looking for a bold step like we saw with the original iMac and Blue & White G3. If Apple can't get a big Mhz boost, then it needs to create a buzz in other ways. Didn't Steve say Apple was going to innovate it's way through these dark days of computing?

It's been really quiet in Appleland for some time.

The idea is that you wouldnt have to update all of your Airport hardware, just the $99 Airport card for BlueTooth. This would also give you compatability with 805G, which should be comming out soon with over twice the bandwidth of the current Airport hardware, and $400 is a lot easier on the wallet than $1200+.

Yes, this is true. However, better that I get subtle hints and she keep her job, than her giving me all the details on a couple week's notice and risk losing said job. Or it could turn out my instincts suck but it's worth a shot.

Anyway, I at least have reason to post to threads like these for once besides just pointing out how useless they typically are. Sorta like that dark lord: "One hint to rule them all; one hint to slight them. One hint to bring them in, and in the darkness spite them!"

Or something like that. Makes no sense of course because I actually want to help, but it sounds neat and I just got back from the second movie so I'm in that frame of mind.

I agree... a $1400 17" LCD 1ghz G4 Combo sounds a little high... but not if they really are planning on bringing the 1.8ghz PPC 970 to us in August...

(which could mean 1.25ghz iMac G4's...)

The 700 to 1ghz jump isn't overly unrealistic (but where are all those 867mhz CPU's gonna go?); However, when paired with 15" to 17" LCD, it really does start to push... that's $200 more for maybe $400+ worth to the consumer...

So again, if Apple really pushes fat CPUs to hot prices, this will probably only be a glimpse of what is to come... and thus it's possible we'll start seeing more than 100mhz jumps...

I'm thinking we should at least see 700 -> 867, or at least a 167 jump... This would alow for another future 867 -> 1ghz ( or 133mhz) jump, to later be followed by a 1ghz -> 1.25ghz (250mhz) jump.

By doing this over a longer period of time, Apple can keep the hype up, and thus keep the sales up.

People will be happy with a 167mhz jump on the bottom line, and the jump to 1ghz can be performed in time for Eductional Season...

(Plus, if they make too much of a jump now, what will they do with surplus???)
