...what i don't get is that most of the lines (let's say half at least) are supposedly booting into os x only come that keynote (while some models will remain os 9-able until june). so either we are going to see a LOT of new hardware, or just the same-old same-old with updated firmware/roms, right?...
[ 12-19-2002: Message edited by: rok ]

Not neccessarely, they said that new models released after January 1 would be OS X boot only. If they dont release any new models untill June, then all of their computers will be capable of OS 9 boot untill June. All that Apple has said in their latest release is that they will continue to market some (and they have named them) models that will continue to boot in OS 9 through next summer, when we will probably see 10.4 released.
I do think that it is a good chance that we will see upgrades to most of Apples line-up in Jan/Feb of 03. I also think that there is a good chance that we will see an expo this summer the likes of the original G4 release. Apple may blow our socks off and have this next month, but I dont look good in blue so I wont hold my breath...
I get the feeling that Apple is very aware that they need something. I'm sure that Steve wants to do his photoshop bake-offs again, yet they have been conspicuasly absent from the keynotes recently. There are signs in their aquisitions that they are up to something, and the 970 is a good omen. I thinkthat we will be impressed when it comes out, and the sooner it does, the better for Apple as a company and for Apples stockholders and the stock market as a whole....
Pasadena store opens on Jan. 7th at 6 PM. This clearly indicates to me the immediate availability of any new hardware announced at the keynote earlier that day. It's not like they're going to pick that exact time and date and then tell everyone "Oh those cool new machines we just announced this morning? Oh yeah, we don't have those. Thanks for coming to our grand opening anyway".
Seems like we're getting new eMacs and iMacs for sure and Steve wants people to take them home that night.
more likely is that they just didnt want people to have to decide between coming to the keynote or going to the grand opening...
6PM is enough time for people to browse the EXPO and have dinner, and stop by the apple store's grand opening probably just a publicity stunt more then anything else...
i doubt it has anything to do with availability of new hardware... although it would be a good idea to have some units on hand... they would be sold in 20 minutes

can you imagine the cheering from the crowd when (if?) he finally does another one...
it will be nuts... even if we beat them by like 30 seconds or so... i mean... they have to address the speed problem sometime in one of the next few keynotes... and then blow it out of the water

Um, are you including the fly time from the bay area? The expo is in San Fran, the store opening is in L.A.
Rumors are steadily building about what to expect next from Apple Computer (nasdaq: AAPL - news - people ) and its rock star Chief Executive Steve Jobs. Jobs is set to make new product announcements part of his keynote speech at the San Francisco Macworld Expo on Jan. 7, 2003. As usual, Apple is giving no hints about what to expect. But the latest rumors suggest that several software updates are due, including the addition of videoconferencing capability to the iChat application launched earlier this year. The Sherlock Internet utility will likely get some new additions, including the ability to search the Web via Google.com and track UPS (nyse: UPS - news - people ) packages, among others. Apple is said to be working on its own Web browser software. And, reportedly, Apple's all-new machines will have Bluetooth wireless connection capabilities integrated. Also, expect some new hardware updates, including speed bumps to the iMac and eMac computer lines, and a larger screen for the flat-panel iMac.

First, it's been stated the G4 tops out around 1.3ghz, so I don't think a 1.5ghz is very likely. Also, following recent history, no towers updated at the show, they should follow a few weeks later.
As for the displays, would you spend time updating a 22" non NH display when you had a 23" HD display? I wouldnt either. Look for the 22" to go bye bye to make room for the 19"
Motorola said the 7457 will top out at 1.833GHz not 1.3GHz. 1.3GHz by the rumor sites perhaps. It won't start out at 1.8GHz but if the G4 can hit 1.25GHz now on 180nm then an Apple line up of 1GHz 1.2GHz and 1.4GHz is as likely IF the next PowerMacs come out with the 7457 rather than a 7455. But being the optimist that I am, I fully expect 1.0-1.6GHz configurations.
i just cannot bring myself to buy any g4-based computers new now if i get even the slightest impression that the powerpc970 (or whatever it is) is on the horizon. and i think apple knows that. so you will not see any "sneak peek" at the new chip (which they will probably brand the "G5")... it'll either be shipping, or it won't.
my guess is the convergence of IBM's own timeline with apple's own end-of-OS9 declaration are too close to be coincidence.
is macworld july in newyork this summer, or was this supposed to be the first year it went back to boston? i got confused with all the bickering back and forth between them.
also, can the imac hardware support a 19" screen? that seems awfully top-heavy.

The 22" Cinema Display didn't suddenly look any less gorgeous when the 23" display was released. The 22" is still a killer display. If it went bye bye you would only have a choice (if you stayed with Apple) of the expected 19" or jumping to the $3,499 23" display.
Most users can't even afford the 22" at it's current price. All Apple has to do is lower the price of the 22" to under $1900. That would provide a great option for those who don't have $3.5k available to spend on a display.

well then maybe Jobs will be making an appearance
I'd say at the very least there will be display models of at least one or two new product(s)
