My theory is that Apple has to clear the gates and assure the buying public that they are continuing to address these customers concerns and brings assurance that they are working for us. It goes a little bit farther than even updating software to correct any outstanding issues. In some cases it involves new trade-in programs (ie: scratched iPod finish issues, scrambled or distorted video issues with G5s) or even firmware updates, all in an effort to make sure everyone is happy so they can go on introducing new hardware without leaving purchasers of recent hardware out in the cold.
It has happened everytime for the last 2-3 years. Apple releases an onslaught of software updates; THEN, the following week we see some new hardware.
Will it hold up after this weeks smattering of updates including iSync 2.1, Mac OS X 10.4.2, iPhoto 5.0.3, Airport 4.2, DVD Studio Pro 4.0.1, Final Cut Pro 5.0.2, SoundTrack Pro 1.0.1...
It clears the gates and assures the buying public that they are continuing to address these customers concerns and brings assurance that they are working for us.
Will my theory hold true? We shall see in a couple days.
Sure, the 17" MBP ships next week. Seems obvious enough.
Sure, the 17" MBP ships next week. Seems obvious enough.
Well, it wasn't obvious until about a week before it was actually announced.
NOW it is obvious! Now that the "surefire indicator" has passed and the leak of this 17" MBP had hit the net - and then culminating this Monday with the actual announcement and release.
It doesn't seem that Apple could possibly release many more software updates so soon as to follow up the previous 2 or 3 week's listing (probably the biggest in the history of Apple Computer).
BUT... the show goes on.
Get a load of this:
GarageBand 3.0.2 Update
Xsan Filesystem 1.3 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
Xsan 1.3 Uninstaller
Xsan Admin 1.3 Update
Xsan Filesystem 1.3 for Mac OS X 10.4
FileMaker Pro 8.0v2
FileMaker Pro 8.0v2 Advanced
Keynote 3.0.1
Pages 2.0.1
Apple Keyboard Update 1.0
Keynote Update 3.0.1v2
Pages Update 2.0.1v2
All in just 4 days time. I wouldn't think Apple would be releasing something else in the next week or two to folly up the new 17" MBP so quickly but one never knows.
According to my theory (though I would bet against it this time \ ), there IS something coming really soon.

I think Apple may be gearing up to release the new iBooks. Why is Apple's new "TV ad" campaign coming out next week (which LoopRumors.com, though not yet a reliable source, indicates will be Mac-related)? If the ad campaign is mac-focused, it makes sense to have the whole consumer product line converted (read: MacBook pros, iBooks, and iMacs) before it's run.

Means that the following week or two (May something-or-other, 2006)
Apple releases new hardware of some sort.
I would not have guessed but my theory says some sort of new hardware is coming really soon.
On the other hand, maybe they're just trying to get the current projects done and out of the way so that they can (a) take summer vacation, (b) get ready for WWDC.

They have done this in the past, but I think these are just necessary updates because some apps were not yet updated for intel Macs, and the rest were just bug fixes.
MacRonin I think you're on to something, but the intel may have gotten garbled in translation.
If they don't release the new 13" MacBook Pro and/or MacBooks soon, a lot of people on these forums are going to need a "tablet".

Two, please: 1 lite with minimal features, one decked to the hilt. With water.
Fingers crossed for Tuesday; my wife desperately needs a new portable and can't stand the metallic MacBook Pro. TS has just updated their site to say May 9 is the MacBook release date. Hmmm....

Why? Because it has already proven the theory's worth?
Lately I have mainly just been using it as a tally.

I wouldn't lock this thread. I find it an interesting theory.
some statistics would be nice like
x= number of updates
y = frequency of updates prior to release
z= actual release date
let's see if there is a statistical correlation.
I would do it myself but I am statistically stunted.
