Woohoo!

I was wrong, and I'm glad! Just ordered a 1Ghz, Superdrive, 1GB RAM and an AC adapter for $2,663.47, including tax and shipping. I am a happy man this morning!

Now I can afford a bunch of new games to go with it.

The DVD burner is effictively £120 from the UK Education Store, which still isn't bad.

Other good offers available from the (UK) Apple store: (not all compatible)
    • Digital Souvenirs: large discounts off a digital camera (Nikon Coolpix 2500 or Coolpix 5000) when you buy a DVD equipped Mac

    • Virtual PC 5.0 for £21 (ran out on 30/9 but still advertised?)

    • Double your RAM for £28 on PowerMacs/PowerBooks.

    • £100 off a combo eMac for students, £150 off a Superdrive eMac for teachers.

given that the new 60 GB drive is only 4200 rpm, is there reason to suspect that it's only 9.5mm instead of 12? (and could then theoretically be used in an ibook?)

I just ordered a 1ghz combo today. Am I missing out on not shelling out another $160 for the superdrive? I just thought that the 3-4 weeks till ship time and the slow 1x write is not much worth it. Does anyone think it is possible to upgrade later on if they do come out with a faster superdrive? Any inputs appreciated.......

My 1ghz superdrive is still being reviewed too. Though I purchased it with a select developer discount.

    Hi everybody,

yeah first post i know but i've been following AI for about 1+ years now so I guess I know how things go over here.

    To business now.

So I was ready to order my PB 1Ghz 1Gb ram no superdrive yesterday but i've come across a terrible thing.

All prices on apple store belgium ( where i live ) say including vat. (21% here)But in the end when i see the final overview of my order, they AGAIN calculate vat in it. That's a difference of about 700? more over here and it already is about 20% more expensive in europe. Hello???

I'm currently educated as an music engineer so that gives me right to get the education discount right?

So I mailed an apple store here in belgium to order it there and ask some questions cause no way they gonna nail me with the 2x vat-thing. They returned a mail that said, you're outta luck, the education stuff just ended blablabla.

I also asked them about the ram promotion where i didn't get an answer from.

Is it so that it is only valid (the promotions) if you order online cause i have a feeling they are gonna stick that b*llsh*t up my rear end. I mean, i would order online if they didn't calculate 2xvat. I'm sure this is completely illegal and nobody of the official apple guys is willing to give me decent info. I tried to send a mail to apple where i got an auto returned mail that said thanks for your interest but don't expect an answer from us. holy....

Then I called 2 phonenumbers, both of them were computervoices, i mean, i need answers and i need them ASAP. I've been waiting for this 1Ghz just as long as you guys and now i can't even order it in a decent way, i even can't talk to someone personally which is very important in doing business. Seems they don't want to sell apples here in europe. I've heard it a lot that apple support stinks and i now know they were right even though i didn't want to believe it first. I'm one of the switchers so i don't know what to suspect from apple (although my intuition tells me that a pb kicks a**e*, yes more than one)but you guys can understand what impression this gives me, right?

I mean: if they even can't program a website (the vat-thing),what about software not to say hardware. (Could be my fellow belgians which are incompetent but i doubt that, if they all as smart as me)

Well whatever, just needed to get this off my chest.I can wait a little longer but it wasn't suppose to be like this and i already was frustrated about it.

As i said, whatever, time will tell.

    Greetz to y'all!!!

I ordered mine through academic developer purchase also and they did not require any transcripts from me. I called apple's ADC and they said that I did not need to. I asked for the fax number anyway just in case. Did they ask for yours or did you just send it anyway?

Mine is still being reviewed too (ordred through ADC Student)...can't wait for it to move to "being assembled!"

BTW, I'm keeping the iBook as a jukebox for my workout room.

Well, I set aside 3,600 dollars to purchase a new powerbook when it was updated to meet my expectations. i can't say the new laptop has it all but i am impressed and talked myself into going to the apple store today and buying one. it took me all night to decide if it was time to spend the money. well, i arrived at the apple store to find out that they don't even have them in stock. what a drag! now, after having more time to think about it, i may just wait even longer since the next expo is around the corner and i don't really need one but just wanted it because it is so cool..haha. so i guess i can say i am still undecided. maybe it is better to wait and get some feedback from the rest of the group that bought. does anyone know when the apple store is scheduled to have the new powerbooks in stock and how long does it take if you order on-line? just wondering.

funny thing, I ordered mine through the ADC student discount on wednesday. I checked last night (immediately after I received a confirmation email) and it said it was being assembled. you can imagine the joy I felt. This was without asking for a transcript. Today, I check again, and it's back to review. Now I'm worried. Still haven't asked me for a transcript or anything...

Another interesting little upgrade tidbit. According to the spec page, the new Powerbooks have a 61 W-hr Li-ion battery, whereas the previous generation was only 55.3. So that I think compensates for some of the extra power consumption from faster chips.

    Hey guys,

I just went to the apple store in Somerset Mall, Michigan to look at the new powerbooks. Anyway, I asked the guy about the heat as well as the paint issue. Regarding the heat, he said that because Ti conducts heat well it will get a bit warm(I took that as meaning it will be the same). However, he did say that the new PB will use different paint that is supposed to be tougher and not chip off. This is great news as I am going to order my new PB within the week!!!

If you can, why don't you just order from the USA apple store and have it shipped to Belgium. Can people not living in the USA do that?

I don't know about that, could be but i've already went to a local dealer.

I just don't trust internet in doing business, never had, never will + i want to speak somebody personally when doing business to talk things over and get some signatures.

Apple now has changed the problem at the apple store belgium, i guess they read AI too heh?

With a few small exceptions, the new GHz PowerBook G4 is essentially a portable low-end xServe

No, it is from Matsushita. Pioneer has nothing to do with this.

Thanks for that tip. Really helps. Matsushita is a fine company, but Pioneer is truly tops in this area.

But those are very important exceptions.
