  • Apple releases macOS 10.15.3, iOS 13.3.1, iPadOS 13.3.1, tvOS 13.3.1, watchOS 6.1.2

iOS/HomePod/iTunesMatch bug hasn't yet been solved by engineering [reported to Apple engineers about 3 weeks ago].

Bug: With an iTunes Match subscription (not Apple Music subscription) and HomePod set to recognize your voice, Siri is unable to access music in the iCloud Music Library. Example: requesting Siri play anything in your iCloud Music Library results in Siri stating the music is not in your library.

Temporary work-around: Turn off "Recognize My Voice" in the Home app on your iOS device. Siri will then be able access all your music in the iCloud Music Library.

You can still factory reset a HomePod or HomePod mini by plugging it into the USB port on a Mac
Really?  I have a dozen of the OG HomePods and two of the 2nd gen - where do you plug in the USB cable (they do not have a USB port????
You are absolutely correct. My apology, this only applies to HomePod mini. The jumbo has no ports and can only be factory reset using the top controls.

I should know this because I have a 1st gen HomePod that is truly bricked. From what I’ve read some of the 1st gen have a component, I think an inexpensive diode, that shorts out and renders the device totally inoperative. It’s way down at the base of the device and requires peeling back many layers of the assembly onion to gain access. I’m keeping it around in case I get bored and want to play with puzzles.
RE: the dead diode, check out Nic's Fix, both website and youtube channel (where he live streams his repairs). He is able to disassemble the HomePod, replace the diode, and reassemble with no damage to the HP. He is able make other repairs and fixed two of my HPs -- the dead diode/no power issue and the "death farts"/DC offset issue. Reasonable prices, too.

RE: HomePod ports. There is a port in the bottom of the HP--Nic has info on this port and tried to reset bricked HP via this port connected to a Mac, but hasn't had any luck, yet.

You updated and tried it already? Just because it isn't in the release notes doesn't mean it is not fixed. BTW, I reported back in early December to support.
Of course. Updated and tested before posting. Bug is still present.

  • Mark Zuckerberg says the Vision Pro doesn't present 'any breakthroughs'

So.... Zuckerburg just took time to let Meta employees know he has pooped himself over Vision Pro.
Can hardly wait for Meta employees to stage Vision Pro's mock funeral, "Meta Quest buries the competition!"

  • NSO Group CEO says law-abiding citizens have 'nothing to be afraid of'

"We are selling our products to governments. We have no way to monitor what those governments do," he said.

Hulio did note that NSO Group has mechanisms in place to detect when abuse happens so that the company can "shut them down." He says that NSO Group has "done it before and will continue to do so. On the other hand, he said that NSO Group shouldn't be responsible for government misuse.
So which is it, Hulio? Do you have a means of monitoring what governments do, or don't you?

  • Apple will launch HomePod with 7-inch screen in 2024, says Kuo

Goofy combination to be honest.  Any form factor that doesn’t alter the sound imaging by obstructing the speaker?  I can’t get the image of a second
gen iMac out of my head.

I had the same image in my head. Though I still don’t know why I need a screen  on my HomePod, especially if I interact with it via AppleTV, my iPhone phone,  or my voice. Different strokes, I guess.

  • Chipolo announces ONE Spot tracking tag with Find My support

    hmlongco said:
"Should another person find the Chipolo ONE Spot, they'll be able to identify and contact the owner."

Ummm.... does that mean a thief with an iPhone can "find" the Spot just as soon as it's reported lost?
What "Should another person find the [lost] Chipolo" is likely referring to is this (from Chipolo website):
"When one of the Chipolo community members passes by your lost item, their phone will record your lost Chipolo’s new location. You will then receive an anonymous notification of your Chipolo’s new location. It will be sent to the Chipolo app on your phone and to your email."

So, another person doesn't actually "find" the lost Chipolo; If a passerby belongs to the Chipolo community, then their device will send an updated location, anonymously,  to the person who lost the Chipolo Spot.

  • Developers get day in court over 'tyrannical greed' of Apple's App Store

I don't like their chances. Their arguments are weak. Their demands are ridiculous.
If you want to go after Apple's monopoly, you have to use the customer's right to chose what apps they can use on their iPhones. That is where Apple is the weakest.
For example, why can't I mine cryptocurrency on my iPhone if I want to?
Why can't I use BitTorrent if I want to?
Why can't I display a list of the WiFi networks around me?
Why can't I run a Windows or game emulator?
Why can't I choose any kind of Apple Watch face?
    1. Because that's what Apple allows/disallows.
    2. You chose to use the product knowing the limitations
    3. You don't have a "right" to choose features and capabilities Apple doesn't offer.
    4.  You DO have the right to petition Apple to change its policies.
    Yep.

Steve Jobs commenting on applications that are rejected in the Appstore because they provide pornographic content (2017):
"Folks who want porn can buy an Android phone."
