  • Apple hides job titles of ex-employees, reclassifies them all as 'associates'

My wife works in HR and is frequently assisting with hiring (and separations). She also handles employment verification. She has repeatedly told me the only thing she can verify is if someone actually worked at her company, that’s it. Job titles shouldn’t matter in that case.

ETA: Asked my wife for clarification, here’s what she said, “Yeah we don't actually do it it's all outsourced so they can only give the high-level information they were employed at this company from this date to that one.  They can also get general titles, I believe. But it’s not uncommon for titles not to match. They also verify education, etc. generally just trying to make sure it all checks out at a high level.”

I was a little off but my point is it’s unlikely this person didn’t get hired simply because Apple (supposedly) changed job titles on departure.

  • HomePod software version 16.3 is here alongside tvOS 16.3

Just did the update, Temp reading & humidity is quite accurate. Love it
I’m not seeing any new sensors post upgrade. Where do you find this info?
Your phone also needs to be updated. I did the HomePods first but nothing new was working. Then I updated my phone. The temp and humidity sensors were then visible in HomeKit. I see them available under “Automations” and in the settings for each HomePod they are shown under “Accessories”.

  • Peloton abandons Apple's GymKit health data sharing platform

GymKit is one of those technologies that I always have felt Apple didn’t push enough or advertise enough. A couple of years after GymKit was announced we were in the market for a treadmill for home use. The only company I could find that had products that integrated GymKit was TechnoGym. At the time the pricing was out of our budget, I think the lowest cost treadmill that TechnoGym offered with GymKit was around $14,000.

A few weeks ago I needed some new dumbbells and went to the local fitness supply store. For reference, I’ve been working part-time at a gym for 17 years and this is the store our gym uses to buy equipment. While I was there I was talking to the “sales guy” and asked if he knew if GymKit was available on replacement head units for the indoor cycle we have at home. He didn’t know what GymKit is. In his defense, they don’t carry TechnoGym, which, outside of Peloton, is the only manufacturer I’ve ever heard of that supported GymKit. But to me that’s ridiculous. How is it possible that a guy who works at a fitness supply store doesn’t know anything about GymKit when GymKit has been available for so long? That’s a failure on Apple’s part.

By the way, I’ve used GymKit enabled equipment a few times, usually at hotels, and it works well. If I use our home treadmill my watch doesn’t get the mileage as accurately as the treadmill does and the treadmill doesn’t get my heart rate/calorie burn as accurately as my watch does. Using GymKit resolves those issues and it’s really nice.

  • Only Apple could have made Apple Vision Pro, say firm's design chiefs

    avon b7 said:
This is Apple getting high on its own delusions.

    It's understandable but still ridiculous.

Anybody that thinks only 'they' could do something really needs to rethink things.
I’m pretty sure they are correct when they say only Apple could have created the Apple Vision Pro.

  • EU advocacy group sues Apple because other streaming music services hiked prices

Why wouldn’t Euroconsumer sue the streaming services that increased the cost to their customers? This is like suing UPS or FedEx because the shipping fees added to the cost of the product I wanted to buy.

  • Facebook shutters news rather than pay up under new Canadian law

The only "news" Facebook ever reports is what their algorithm shows will inflame...er, I mean, "engage" that particular user the most, so loss of that facility is essentially no loss at all.
In 2017 a high school friend of mine was visiting us. He is ALWAYS on Facebook (I’m don’t use Facebook at all).

One morning I saw an alert about a mass shouting in Las Vegas the night before. I commented to him about it. He looked confused, pulled out his phone and started poking around. A minute or so later he said, “There’s nothing on Facebook about it. It’s probably fake news.” I told him I read about it on whatever well known source. He was baffled and checked Facebook AGAIN.

He struggled to believe that a major event like that would happen and he wouldn’t see it on Facebook.

So, yes, Facebook algorithms appear to be working as you mentioned. Also, all Facebook users will benefit if they stop relying on Facebook for their news.

  • Apple execs explain Apple's position in the AI race & how it isn't necessarily 'behind'

Joz even scoffed at the idea of it being "demo ware," in what seemed to be a pointed comment at Daring Fireball's John Gruber.

Sure, now that it’s a year later. We still aren’t seeing the semantic index stuff that was touted at WWDC 2024. What is Joz scoffing at?
At the suggestion that what was shown during WWDC 2024 was faked or not actually running.
I understand, I’m just saying that it has been a year since the event where many things that were shown still haven’t been seen (by anyone outside of Apple), and yet he scoffs at the notion they don’t exist. Seems silly to me. I’m happy he seems confident in Apple’s ability to deliver the still missing features, but he shouldn’t be scoffing.

Side note: there is a lot of speculation that Apple snubbed Gruber over the Something is Rotten article, but I’d also point out that Gruber has made many posts specifically calling out Tim Cook for donating to Trump’s inauguration and seeming to be generally supportive of Trump. Gruber’s comments on that subject frequently use terms like “bootlicker” and it’s certainly possible that it’s those comments, made over and over about Tim Cook that he has been snubbed over.

  • Nearly one million 'Fortnite' users getting FTC refunds for unauthorized charges

Players will get refunds either by check or PayPal payment. Payout amounts will depend on several factors, including how many people file a claim.

Hey, now. That isn’t fair. I don’t want to use either a check or PayPal and my preferred method is Apple Cash. Shouldn’t the courts force Epic to allow me to choose the way I want to be paid? I don’t want to go through their system.

  • iOS 26 Message filtering upsetting fundraising politicians that want to annoy iPhone users...

I don’t know anyone, on either side, that looks forward to getting political text messages. I DO know people that donate to their chosen political party and then are still annoyed that they get texts asking them to donate. I, for one, am looking forward to keeping it the way it is in iOS 26 (and I already use filtering of unknown text messages).

  • Apple forcefully refutes UK's claims about mobile browsing

This could be a significant milestone in the UK, following the EU’s lead in permitting porn apps to be installed.
