  • Hands on with Apple's new Smart Battery Case for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR

Bought two of these (Max) and received them yesterday. Here are my initial impressions:
-They are a little harder to remove than previous versions, maybe there is a break-in period. Material feels great.
-There is a lip on the bottom of the phone for some reason, a departure from other Apple silicone/leather X/XS cases, so the swipe up home gesture felt funny for a few tries.
-Despite the capacity controversy, they seem to be only capable of charging half of the phone’s battery capacity in my usage, so one case will get me from 0 to 50%. I have the phone in low power mode with the screen off when charging for this test.
-Perhaps my biggest disappointment: I just replaced all my Mophie flat pucks and 29-watt iPhone lightning docks with the amazing new Logitech stand Apple worked with them on, and have them all over the house. Typically I used to leave one or both batter cases charging when not in use. The cases appear to charge in this stand (case LED turns amber), but at a very slow rate (8 hours got the case from 0 to 20%; just the case, without the phone). The Apple support article says if the case charges slowly, make sure the Apple logo is centered on the puck. The odd thing is, the Apple logo on the case seems to be right about in the middle of the phone, in other words it’s in the same position as the sweet spot of the phone. Nonetheless, I had to bring out the pucks again and it took several attempts to get it positioned just right to charge at a decent pace. Looks like I must go back to the lightning dock with 29-watt USB-C adapter and cables, but if the case only ups my iPhone 50%, not sure it’s worth it. The iPhone 7 case nearly got the phone fully recharged.
-It feels amazing in the hand!!

  • Apple's CSAM detection system may not be perfect, but it is inevitable

No source quoted in the article. The author is presenting his opinion as if it were factual. This technology from Apple will never see the light of day, specifically after the widely publicized epic fail incident he mentioned, occurring last week with Google and the innocent parent.

  • U.S. antitrust officials ask to be heard in Epic vs. Apple appeal

Is that a thing now – the government “participating” or intervening in civil cases between two private parties? Merrick Garland has crossed the line. Such an abuse of power. If you hate Apple, sue them yourselves.

  • Early previewers praise new HomePod's 'just wow' audio

Sounds like people were probably wow’ed by the stereo pair demo and the one glowing review was probably placebo effect. For whatever reason (upsell opportunity?), Apple gimps the volume output of a single HomePod. Mine is nothing to write home about and I use these in areas where a stereo pair is not feasible. I’m convinced that people who think this is the “best sounding speaker on the market,” etc, have just never had a high quality audio setup. If Apple remove the artificial volume limitation from a single HomePod, it would be enough to make me upgrade to the new model.

  • Epic calls Apple's 'Fortnite' & developer tool block 'overbroad retaliation'

The hearing has disappeared from Judge Chen’s calendar tomorrow. Trying to figure out why.

  • TSMC plans more 3nm chip factories in big Taiwan production push

When China takes back Taiwan it's going to really hurt the west.  All these chip facilities will disappear overnight.

West….Diversify now forever be held hostage
That is precisely why the last paragraph talks about upcoming facilities being constructed in Arizona USA, and Singapore. TSMC and Apple probably are already deep into contingency planning for if/when China tries to turn Taiwan into the next Ukraine. Everybody knows China is likely to be as ruthless and unconcerned with civilians and scorched earth as Russia.
But the $12B plant in Arizona pales in comparison to the $40B in new plants that were announced in this article for Taiwan (and only represents 10% of the recent $120B spending spree). It’s likely being built there just to keep Apple happy, and they probably have first right of refusal for all of the Arizona capacity.

It’s far more likely that these plants are Taiwan’s hostages. In other words, “the West will only be forced to go to war for us if we keep most of our plants right here.”

  • Musk taps over 50 Tesla employees to make Twitter changes

That’s could become a controversial move since Tesla is a public traded company and Twitter is his private company. So borrowing employees from a public company can get weird.
Not controversial at all. They will likely be paid as independent contractors by Twitter and receive a 1099 next year for tax purposes. One's original employer (Tesla in this case) cannot bar or punish the employee for simply working a second job unless it violates a non-compete or causes issues relating to performance at the original job.
I highlighted the reason it's controversial.

Musk has a huge conflict of interest here. He now has a massive financial interest in Twitter and is abusing his position as CEO of Tesla to divert Tesla resources to help Twitter. That benefits him but almost certainly hurts Tesla shareholders. The only uncertainty is how much it hurts Tesla shareholders.

That's only an issue if he instructs them, as Tesla management, to work on Twitter stuff.  If, however, he hires them, as Twitter management, to work on Twitter stuff, the only controversy is if they do, in fact, harm Tesla in so doing.  I've been programming professionally for almost 40 years, and lots and lots of programmers moonlight without harm to their "main" employer.
Yeah but,  this is likely bad for morale and could create employees churn and turnover in the coming weeks\months.  There is no telling how many at Tesla and now twitter are looking to jump ship as fast as they can.  Let’s not
mention how bad this can be for productivity and health having this “moonlight” work as you call it.
Hope you are right about the existing Twitter employees jumping ship. The platform needs less radicalized left-wing censors and more adults in the room.

  • No 'Studio Display Pro' in 2022, suggests Ming-Chi Kuo

Both analysts could be right, if the panel Ross speaks of is going into an iMac Pro, and not a standalone display. Still hoping. It would also quash the debate over whether Thunderbolt/USB-C cables support 5K @ 120Hz, as the display would be internal and connected with a proprietary connector or whatever they use in an iMac.
