  • Apple made secret 5-year $275B deal with Chinese government

    This is consistent.
China encourages and supports capitalistic ventures -- as long as they benefit China and its people -- and especially if they do not threaten the stability and growth of the country.

    It's a win-win strategy.
    in this case:
Apple wins, China wins, and the Chinese people win -- and we win because we get great iPhones at prices we can afford.

  • Apple uses Messages colors to bully Android users, says Google

    avon b7 said:
It's all a bit stupid. iMessage/Messages used the colour scheming to identify those who used iMessage and those who didn't (for whom the fallback were potentially costly SMS messages to people using Apple's app. .

Perhaps that decision could be frowned on today, now that social media is so prevalent among the wider public, and Messages could be required to only show users that are on the network. Just like Signal, WhatsApp, Telegram...

The problem for Apple is that that could lead some users away from Messages.

It's not bullying IMO, but I can see a problem (with easy solutions).

NBC News reported that a former Apple employee said that blue was used during the initial development of iMsgs so that they could tell one from the other -- and it just stuck around and made its way into production.  But initially there was no intent to distinguish iMsgs from others -- that is was simply a development tool.

  • This is the best tool to safely clean your AirPods or AirPods Pro

I just scrap any debris off -- although I avoid touching the grills.

I finally figured out my biggest problem though:  My Airpods repeatedly developed a problem where one would not only not charge but actually discharge while in the case.

It turned out (I think) that it was sweat on the Airpod after a workout (mostly running) where the sweat would run down and corrode the terminal in the bottom of the case.   The case tested fine but the Airpod was not working right -- so Apple kept replacing the Airpod when the case was the problem.
Now I wipe them off before returning them to the case.

Go figure. Apple. That's why CCP leaves Apple alone vs. other U.S. companies. To do business in Asia, all you have to do is bribe to get your place secured.

So where's the bribe?  This was a smart business deal that both sides benefited from.

  • Epic vs. Apple takes new turn as 34 US states & DOJ side with 'Fortnite' maker

I feel like there are infinite analogies that show why this whole Epic thing is ridiculous. Here’s one:
The best nightclub in town charges a cover at the door, and the entertainment and overall experience they provide is the best anywhere. They provide complimentary water and soft drinks, included in the price of admission, and sell alcoholic drinks at industry-standard prices. I own a champagne producer, and I determine that customers would buy more of my champagne if the price were lower, but rather than lower my own wholesale price to the club, I try to legally force the club to reduce their markup, arguing that once a customer pays the cover, the club has a monopoly on all products sold there.

As long as the Apple App Store is the only distribution point of iOS apps, your analogy is incorrect.    Keeping the analogy, this would mean that the night club owner does not allow the champagne producer to sell to other night clubs.
But Apple does not prohibit anyone from selling their apps to users on Android or any other OS.

I guess you are one of those people who thinks that Apple has an obligation to let anyone sell anything on iOS for free. How is Apple supposed to recoup its expenses for things like CloudKit services that are included in everyone's apps? Or do you think Apple is not allowed to charge for its services? How would you propose Apple get paid for its services?
Not every app uses CloudKit, and Apple can charge developers or users directly for its use if they want to, or they can provide it as a free platform feature to add value to the iPhone as a product.  Either is fine.

That's the answer to the first question, the second question is straw man junk, and the third is the same as the first.  Try to ask one question at a time and keep it sensible if you want respectful responses.

Asking Apple to build and maintain a free secure store for developers to sell their products is not fair to Apple.  And, it would be unfair to Apple's customers because Apple would have no incentive to maintain or enhance it -- so customers would get less than optimal experience.

Switching to fixed fee, upfront charges could/would set up a roadblock for small & first time developers (the kind Apple has always supported and encouraged) by charging them upfront regardless of whether their app sells or not.   Charging as a percent of sales enables small and first time developers to get started with low up front costs and then only charge them when they receive revenue dollars from their app.

I think this is a situation where any new "fix" merely spawns other problems elsewhere in the chain -- and that any "fix" would be a balancing act between "good & bad, winners & losers.  That is, it's just a matter of picking the best option because there are no perfect options for everybody.

  • Apple VP of health talks about the company's responsibility to keep users healthy

The headline -- about "Apple's responsibility" for its customer's health raises interesting questions:

I have seen that question debated in medical forums:  namely: what responsibility do physicians and healthcare organizations have for their patient's health?
When a fat person comes in with metabolic syndrome -- big belly combined with hypertension and diabetes -- what responsibility does our (so called) healthcare system have to correcting the cause of his disease (too many BigMacs and video games) -- or does its responsibility end with merely treating the effects and symptoms of that lifestyle by prescribing more pills & procedures?

Unlike Apple, it seems that most physicians agree that their job ends with the pills & procedures.  And, it is the patient's responsibility to seek health through a healthy lifestyle.  But, few patients know what a healthy lifestyle is or how to achieve it -- so nothing happens.  Their doctor's pills keep them alive but never cure them of the chronic diseases they suffer from.

  • Apple Women's Health Study uncovers impact of PCOS on other medical issues

Intersting:  those with PCOS are almost twice as likely to be obese -- and obesity likely drives all those other conditions.

BUT WAIT:  is it that those with PCOS are more likely to be obese?  Or those who are obese are more likely to have PCOS?

Obesity / FAT has become a politicized term ("don't body shame me!") so people avoid talking about it.
But, obesity is a contributing cause of most of our chronic diseases (heart disease, cancer, diabetes, arthritis and more).
Obesity / fat doesn't just lie there storing excess energy.  It is an endocrine organ and secretes sex hormones -- which is one reason why it is a probable cause of breast cancer.
It may also be driving PCOS.

  • Apple looking to the past, working on how to put a Mac in a keyboard

Apple could do this right now with m1.

But it’s not a great concept.

    Solution looking for a problem.

From the beginning Apple has succeeded by solving problems people didn't know they had -- till Apple solved them.

  • FDA approves first iOS app to control insulin pump

One more step forward in the struggle with insulin dependent diabetes....
People who can't produce (enough) insulin need all the help we (or Apple) can give them.

Now all we have to do is make it so they can afford the insulin they need to stay alive without forcing them to move to another country.

  • Google Maps, Apple Maps, and smartphones are at the forefront of modern war

Another tech related effect:  Ukraine has suspended electronic funds transfer systems.  While there is no evidence that Apple is involved (I doubt ApplePay/Cash works there) Venmo and Paypal are impacted.

It illustrates the impact of the tech industry on banking systems.
