A8, A8X: How Apple's custom silicon hit Samsung with a one-two punch
Apple has one of the best silicon design teams in the industry, and it’s complemented by writing great firmware which makes for a high performance iPhone with great battery life. Before A8 Intel was the leader in silicon process technology for their CPU’s, but now TSMC is the leader with 5nm technology while Intel is still struggling to get out 10nm CPU’s in volume due to defects. So not only has Apple advanced in their technology road map it has been an enabler for TSMC to do the same. Apple’s A chips has basically given TSMC the customer it needs to fill its expensive state of the art fabs, without Apple TSMC would not be producing 5nm IC’s, and I’m sure both companies realize this. Apple’s next generation iPhones will enable rear camera time of flight capability enabling precise 3D effects unseen in the industry. -
Folding iPhone will probably cost more than the Mac Studio
I think a folding iPhone by Apple will only happen after the super thin Air iPhone. Reason being it will be required since the folding iPhone will have to be very thin. Additionally it will require a decent camera so this will require new cameras and lenses from Sony to work. These two technology hurdles will have to be overcome first. Additionally it will use the new Apple Modem and new Apple WiFi chip which will need to be proven to be reliable. These chips will work in a thinner iPhone and Qualcom chips won’t. I think the display OLED technology is there now. This folding iPhone will also fold vertically not horizontally so it takes up less space in your pocket and you can just swing it open quickly. -
Apple updates iBooks Author with wide color gamut support, easier Photos imports
AppleInsider said:Apple on Monday issued an update to iBooks Author, its tool for building interactive e-books viewable on Mac and iOS devices -- its first such update since 2016.
Images can now make use of the wide color gamut found on recent Macs, iPhones, and iPads, Apple said in iTunes release notes. The company has also made it possible to import images and videos from Photos via the Media Browser or drag-and-drop.
The software also includes unspecified "performance and stability improvements." iBooks Author is a free download, and runs on Macs with OS X 10.11 or better.
The release coincides with the launch of macOS High Sierra, though it doesn't explicitly take advantage of new technology. High Sierra mainly adds support for standards like HEVC video, HEIF images, Metal 2 graphics rendering, and the Apple File System that originally debuted on iOS. It also includes improvements to apps like Safari and Photos, which might have warranted the iBooks Author changes.
