  • Apple's legendary workplace secrecy threatened by Slack

Time for a new CEO at Apple. The things described here suggests the present one no longer connects to the people inside Apple and the handling of the CSAM stuff suggests he no longer understands the world outside Apple.

  • Apple Watch 'Series 7' rumor claims glucose monitoring is on the way

I've had diabetes for 56 years and have dreamt of this for a long time. A non-invasive blood glucose monitor was announced as CES this year by Quantum Operation. I hope these reports relating to multiple companies mean it will really happen soon.

Why doesn't Apple help a privacy advocate such as the duckduckgo organization and let them supply the search engine? Apple doesn't need the revenue stream at this point. Wouldn't that partner be more in line with Apple's current privacy stance? Or maybe you have to be in the "Big Tech" fraternity to be considered, or maybe duckduckgo is unable to scale to accommodate such volume for what ever reason...
Except for the FACT that duckduckgo is a useless piece of crap that can’t find anything. I know, I’ve tried using it several times and always had to return to Google to get what I was looking for. Google Search may have privacy problems but it is the best algorithm out there, period.
Must be user error - I’ve been using DDG almost exclusively for 2 years. Really don’t miss google
I also find DuckDuckGo meets my needs for search. Maybe others do not find it satisfactory because it's not as effective at converting vaguely worded queries into what the user wants. But that's just speculation; since I don't use Google I can't comment on whether it might be a "better" search engine.

  • Pixelmator Pro update adds Motion exports, improved SVG handling

Yes, it's pretty good but has some problems with EXIF tags.

I found that if the UserComment tag contains a non-ASCII character the character gets replaced with a question mark and sometimes the text gets chopped off although not at the character. You can see this by looking at the Info window for a picture with a non-ASCII character (for example an é <e acute>) in the UserComment. I reported this back in August and they hoped to sort it out for version 2.1.4 but it's still not fixed. Accented characters in the ImageDescription EXIF tag do not have this problem

I also think the application modifies GPS information on pictures, only by a small amount (probably less than a metre/3 feet) but I haven't had time to check this in detail.

To bypass these problems I changed my workflow to edit the picture in Pixelmator and then set the EXIF tags to the values I want rather than the other way round.

I realise neither of these will be a problem for most people and I'd still recommend the software.

  • Zoom installer flaw can give attackers root access to your Mac

What is the auto updater Process Name? Then maybe I could kill it in Activity Monitor.

I don't see anything that looks to be associated with Zoom running on my computer, but I have not used Zoom since the last restart.

If I could, I'd ditch wifi in my home completely in favor of CAT5 ethernet cables. That wiring is something of a chore though. And all the little odds and ends at require wifi certainly don't need these uber speeds.
Why Cat 5 instead of 6 or 8? I only ask because I’m wiring my house this fall and the more knowledge I have, the better.
Well...mostly because CAT5 was the last thing I knew about. In other news, there are apparently CAT6 and Cat8 wires. I doubt they are easier to snake through walls though...
When our house was built back in 2010 we installed Cat 5e ethernet cabling. It works very well and I don't find I need the higher speeds.  Our internet comes from a 600mbps fibre optic cable. The biggest problem is that there are not enough sockets in some of the rooms, which is entirely my fault. We put in two point sockets at each outlet - next time I'd put four point sockets in the living room and office. Cat 6 was relatively new when we were building the house and it was easy to get structured cable with Cat 5e, co-ax and loudspeaker cable combined.

I think with Cat 6 it is necessary to avoid sharp bends in the cable which will make it more difficult to install (but please don't quote me on that as I am not an engineer).
