If I could, I'd ditch wifi in my home completely in favor of CAT5 ethernet cables. That wiring is something of a chore though. And all the little odds and ends at require wifi certainly don't need these uber speeds.
Why Cat 5 instead of 6 or 8? I only ask because I’m wiring my house this fall and the more knowledge I have, the better.
Well...mostly because CAT5 was the last thing I knew about. In other news, there are apparently CAT6 and Cat8 wires. I doubt they are easier to snake through walls though...
When our house was built back in 2010 we installed Cat 5e ethernet cabling. It works very well and I don't find I need the higher speeds.  Our internet comes from a 600mbps fibre optic cable. The biggest problem is that there are not enough sockets in some of the rooms, which is entirely my fault. We put in two point sockets at each outlet - next time I'd put four point sockets in the living room and office. Cat 6 was relatively new when we were building the house and it was easy to get structured cable with Cat 5e, co-ax and loudspeaker cable combined.

I think with Cat 6 it is necessary to avoid sharp bends in the cable which will make it more difficult to install (but please don't quote me on that as I am not an engineer).

  • NordVPN 8.6 review: Protect your data on public Wi-Fi

Has the situation described in this article been fixed?

All iOS VPNs are worthless and Apple knows it, claims researcher

Maybe it never existed at all but if it is still present then it is not clear that NordVPN can do what is described in the second sentence of this article:
When you connect to public Wi-Fi, malicious hackers can lurk in wait to steal your private data. NordVPN can protect you from much of this, while maintaining your privacy at the same time.

  • Zoom installer flaw can give attackers root access to your Mac

What is the auto updater Process Name? Then maybe I could kill it in Activity Monitor.

I don't see anything that looks to be associated with Zoom running on my computer, but I have not used Zoom since the last restart.

  • Apple should not be injecting ads in its Apple Music playlists

What is the point of these ads? Aren't Apple's Music radio stations available to everyone on a subscription? How will they get more money if someone hearing the ad decides to listen to the station. How successful are these radio stations? Maybe no-one listens and the people responsible want to justify their jobs by getting an audience.

Another example of the failure of leadership at Apple. The man at top seems more interested in donating money to disaster relief than building a future for the company he plans to leave soon (although I don't remember anything about helping the millions of refugees from Ukraine).

Time to get rid of the technocrat and get someone who understands the technology and people (both inside and outside the business).

  • UK's 'tough' Big Tech regulator to remain permanently toothless

Not sure why the EU’s investigation into Apple Pay was tacked on to the end of this article. Completely different thing.
Maybe not. The UK might be using this to promote a regulation-free alternative to the EU for Big Tech investment.
