  • Three things Apple got wrong with the Vision Pro launch

I’d like to note that when I preordered mine, I did the fit test multiple times and was given two different results.  21W and 33W.  I settled with the 33W but as the two week waiting period dragged on, I noticed that the majority of people were fitted for 21W. Got me wondering.

When I went to pick it up, I asked to try on both light seals before leaving and they were giving me such a hassle.  The rep told me she had to ask her manager first and I kept getting the run around saying the manager was busy.  Then they told me I can take home what I ordered and come back if it doesn’t fit right.   I told them I was not leaving without the proper fit and going to cancel my order if I don’t try on both light seals.  The whole ordeal took over an hour.  Needless to say I was extremely frustrated.

By the way, the 21W actually turned out to be the better fit, against the 33W that the Apple Store app recommended the majority of the time.

  • Google's next project is making its ecosystem more like Apple's

And then they’ll kill it off in the blink of an eye.

  • 'Car Keys Tests' app surfaces on App Store

CarKey is an awesome feature that I’d hoped would’ve seen a wider adoption by now. I really wanted this after my wife got it with her BMW X5. This along with HomeKey and now I don’t have to carry physical keys and the added pocket bulk with me anymore.

That said, I was pretty much forced into getting a BMW for this feature.  Not that that’s a bad thing as I love BMW cars and have owned in the past but having options would be much better.

  • Inside all the new HomeKit products coming out in 2020

I don’t believe anything Netatmo says will be released.  Been waiting over a year for a video doorbell that was supposed to be launched in the last quarter of 2019.  Waited patiently since it was announced at CES last year and then checked the website every day since Oct 1. Zilch...
Bet the ADT video doorbell is released before the Netatmo, which is the new one I’m looking forward to.  Gave up hope on the Netatmo and I wouldn’t think about the Robin which is way overpriced for a 720p camera.

  • Apple turns on HomePod's smoke alarm recognition

It’s a pop up at the top of the Home app when you open it, like when there’s an update available.  I just got it on mine.

  • Wemo Stage with Thread review: Finally a reliable HomeKit button

I must have a faulty unit. I have an extensive amount of HomePod Minis in my house scattered around. Eight of them to be exact. I’m not sure if I need more Thread devices but the response time for mine has been just a little better if not the same as when it was running in Bluetooth. That’s only with one of the configured buttons using single tap.  Double tap or long press doesn’t work at all for me.

The worst part is the battery drain. After the update, I replaced two batteries within a week. Not even exaggerating. I saw the battery drop to 94% inside of 10 minutes and kept going from there. Then the Home app stopped showing the battery percentage altogether after two days. I already reached out to Wemo regarding these issues but I’ve never had a Wemo HomeKit device that I was happy with. Shame because that new doorbell looks really good but I’m skeptical.
You can have 20 HP mini but only 1 will be the border router. All others will be routers only. Have you check that the unit is actually using Thread? Download the Eve app and check your Thread network it tells you if the unit is already on Thread or still using Bluetooth.

How to change it from Bluetooth to Thread? That’s just the same as AirPods firmware update: MAGIC. There is no way to force it just let it sit there and it will switch. That happened to me with 1 of the A19 essential bulbs from Nanoleaf. It was using Bluetooth with the slowest response. I didn’t pay attention to it and eventually switch itself to Thread.
I have the Eve app and the Thread network has been stuck on “Checking Network Status” for a long time.  My HomePod Minis or ATV 4K (2021) don’t show up there.  Do you need at least one Eve device for it to show anything because I don’t currently.  So what you’re saying is the rest of my HomePod Minis that aren’t acting as a border router are irrelevant within the Thread network?  I thought they still play a part in strengthening it. Maybe I’m just misunderstanding you.

I got the firmware update for the Wemo Stage and the current firmware with thread support is showing in the Home app.  So it’s not automatically connecting to Thread after the update?  Makes sense then if it was still Bluetooth slow after the update.  This still doesn’t explain why the battery is draining from 100-0 in just a few days.  Two brand new Energizer CR 2032  batteries did that.  I really don’t know what’s going on.  Thanks for the reply and info.

  • Apple-backed Matter smart home standard delayed until 2022

I guess this explains why all the newly announced Google cams don’t support “Matter”

Was really looking forward to this soon. Oh well, there’s always next year.

  • Apple gearing up to re-release revamped HomeKit architecture

Unless you're a developer, here's the best advice you'll hear on installing beta software: don't. And if you still feel the need to, do a current backup first, and take your device offline.

As a consumer/enduser, you have nothing to lose by waiting for the official release. I spent 14 years working for an Apple Specialist and then Apple Inc. and never, ever installed a beta on any of my devices after seeing people coming in crying about what happened when they did.

I’m in complete agreement with you on this. I never install any beta., ever. I feel most people on the Apple betas are just in it for the new features early and not to report bugs.  In all fairness though, the new HomeKit architecture released with 16.2 was a public release.

  • How to use Mac Virtual Display for Apple Vision Pro with desktop Macs and MacBooks

Does the desktop Mac need a display for this to work?  In other words, can I just setup a Mac Mini and use the AVP as its only/primary display?  Guessing I’ll need one initially to setup the prerequisites like Bluetooth and WiFi.

And... is the connection between the two over an existing LAN? Or is it a dedicated Wifi/Bluetooth connection?

And will this work over the Internet if I'm in a coffee shop?
In answer to the headless Mac mini question, set up originally using a display, connect a $8 HDMI spoofer plug so the Mac mini thinks it's connected to a monitor, and you're good to go.

In answer to your question, RCS1000, it works with my Mac Studio with the Wi-Fi off, so existing LAN, it seems.

It does not work over the Internet if you're in a coffee shop.
    Thanks for that!
