  • Garmin challenges the Apple Watch Ultra with new smartwatches

I realize this is the least critical of the top Apple fan sites and tailors its editorial to the most committed users accordingly (gotta make a dollar, no shade intended!), but given Garmin has a proven track record of making ruggedized smart watches tailored to that niche for years, and the AW Ultra is still the newcomer, wouldn't a more accurate headline be something like, "Year-old Apple Watch Ultra up now challenging refreshed Garmin options"?

There is nothing specifically wrong with the Apple Watch Ultra. It's a fine, one-size-fits-all product. But presenting the Apple option as the standard bearer through word choice is disingenuous fan service. All companies should have to work for every inch of their reputation through time, revisions, and responding to customer feedback, not have it handed to them for free.
Not so much! Apple Watch outsells the Garmin line by nearly 3-to-1, with much higher revenue and growth as well. So no. Apple is the standard-bearer in this category. To say otherwise would be distorting the facts.
Apple owns the overall smart watch market by a lot, but Garmen still owns the high end fitness market.  The ultra runner's, triathletes, adventure racers, etc are all primary Garmen users.  The apple watch Ultra was the first attempt to win these users over.  Battery life was really holding apple back from this group because the standard apple watch wouldn't last long enough to finish a lot of these races.  The Apple Watch Ultra was a good first attempt for this market, but Garmen still own it.

  • How the Apple Ring will blow all the other smart ring manufacturers out of the water

The Meta Quest 3 has full color passthrough and it was announced and released before the apple vision pro.  So no apple didn't come out with it first.  If Apple does release a ring, I'm not expecting it to blow everything out of the water.  I think it will be similar to the Apple watch and just get out the door and finally get better over with each generation.  The original apple watch was like a beta release, and it was missing way too many functions but now I think it's great.

  • Compared: 2021 iPad Pro vs 2020 iPad Pro and 2018 iPad Pro

I do not need this iPad Pro but oh boy do I want it. the iPad Air 4 is enough for my use case at the moment.

2021 iPad Pro with the M1 is a brilliant move in terms of product positioning as personally I always felt that the iPad Pro value prop was limping along a bit since the soc tended to be an interaction of the iPhone soc. Now it is more positioned with heavy workloads and helps Apple to build further efficiencies of scale for the M1 chip.

I wonder if there would be a future option to run Rosetta 2 on the iPad and if having a magic keyboard and trackpad connected then to flip into a macOS emulation mode similar to how iOS apps can run under macOS. The M1 certainly provides the infrastructure to enable all sorts of convergence use cases in the future.
With the iPad Pro now having the M1 and still starting at $999 (for the 11"), I wouldn't recommend the iPad Air ($599). For an extra $200 you get so much more (ProMotion, FaceID, Center Stage, 8GB / 16GB RAM, double performance, quad speakers, better mics)  and it's worth it even if only for the future proofing. In addition to that the iPad 9 is rumored to get the A13, 4GB RAM, laminated screen, 10.5" screen. To me, the iPad Air is stuck between a rock and a hard place.   If someone is asking my recommendation, I'd say get the entry-level iPad if interested in only basic tasks otherwise fork over the extra $200 for the 11" iPad Pro.
Am I missing something here?  $599 to $999 is another $400 not an extra $200.

  • Brazil orders Apple to pay iPhone buyer $1,000 for not including charger

Stupid lawsuit.  Apple made it clear that the phone doesn't come with a charger, you have the option not to buy the phone.  I could see and issue if they led you to believe the charger was included.   And why is the compensation not just the cost of the charger if that is the issue.

  • Apple's extortionate upgrade prices can't stop the MacBook Air being a bargain

Apple's storage upgrades are the worst example of price gouging.  You can purchase a top spec 1 TB M2 SSD for under $100 but apple charges $400 just to upgrade.  This is the reason I have refused to buy a new Apple laptop for over 10 years now.  I've managed to do everything I need to do with an iPad and my iPhone.  I'd like a new Macbook Air but until they start including more storage standard or bring their upgrade prices to realistic levels, I refuse to support these practices.
