Apple's new 16-inch MacBook Pro reveals its future direction
sidedtech said:It says the new keyboard has 1mm depth. What's the depth of the 2015 models before they tried the terrible mechanism?
I want to buy it but not sure if it's the good keyboard or just a better one.

Apple weighing legal action against Trump immigration ban, to match employee donations to ...
sirozha said:Cook should be ousted.
Meanwhile Cook is doing a pretty good job. Rather than saying he should be ousted you're going to have to suggest who'd do better. Under Cook's watch he hired Angela Ahrendts, whom with Ive went way beyond Steve's vision of what an Apple Store could be. Under Cook's watch Apple redefined and I would argue defined what a modern watch should be. AirPods happened under Cook's watch—as important a product as any iPod. It's early days. Apple has yet to reveal where it's decided to take the pro desktop market—we must have patience here. They are obviously working on something. And are probably working on a nice new Apple display and a modern WiFi networking solution. Among other things. For now Apple's doing better than ever. Let's see what pans out over the next three years. If nothing truly interesting happens from Apple in the next three years then by all means put in another CEO.
iOS is more polished and stable than ever and the app ecosystem is doing really great. We've a new vastly improved file system coming (under Cook's watch), a new vastly improved programming language (under Cook's watch), and a new cloud infrastructure coming. And besides what we don't know of we know Apple are both working on a car and a home voice speaker.
Under Cook's watch he successfully defeated the fucking FBI.
Speaking of products, you're a product of a FWP generation. -

Growth of Apple's Siri hampered by privacy & departure of key staff - report
Good because privacy is the number 1 important issue of our times. Or at the very least one of the top five issues going. I wouldn't necessarily want to, but I could get by without a digital assistant. I could even get by, if I had to, without a phone, period. But I couldn't relax and feel myself without privacy. Once you have no privacy, you have no identity IMO. It is also certainly a key reason I choose Apple products over competitors. In terms of voice assistants in technology, early days doesn't even begin to get to the heart of where we are at this point. And tbh, even though Path Inc's social network didn't take off, long term I see the potential for a competitor to Facebook coming along and succeeding with privacy being its key differentiator. It may not happen next year, but it wouldn't surprise me if it happens at some point. If Duck Duck had a search engine anywhere near as good as Google's I'd so never use Google again.Apple's privacy policy is making hard to evolve and personalize Siri, the ex-Apple sources told the Wall Street Journal.

Apple disallows developers from collecting and sharing Contacts data
I personally think a users Contacts should be unattainable on iOS. No apps should be left near them. Completely sandboxed and locked down, as safe as a user’s unlock password. It’s one of the reasons I refuse to use WhatsApp, for example. I will never give my contact book to any app... ever. Apple should rethink this. It’s serious.
Fuck Facebook... fuck snapchat... fuck Twitter... fuck WhatsApp. Fuck them all. They should not have our contacts and be able to determine who we know and where they live and likely relationship—those details are private and no business of any corporation. I remember about four years ago when I re-signed up for Facebook, they rold me: “here are some people you might know”, and it was cousins and friends and relations. Because others clicked a button on their phone these companies get my private data? I don’t think that’s very fair, safe, private, and I think long term it’s a recipe for disaster, tbh. These companies should not have our contact data.

How to keep your MacBook Pro battery healthy for years
Bit of a hack, but if you want to give your MagSafe-Mac power, without charging the battery, you can place a small piece of paper here. Your battery will still climb in power slightly over time. If you keep this Mac plugged in for extended periods of time—days or weeks, it is one way to help prevent it falling to 0 or reaching 100. I have found if you plug in around 40%, that’s a good starting point. Got the tip online from someone who studies battery chemistry. -
