  • It's still cheaper to import iPhones with 25% tariffs, than assemble in the US

The most important thing to that convicted felon is that Cook bow to him. He's not concerned with bringing manufacturing back to America. That's theater. He wants the 'Muricans to think he's a hero. He's flexing his ego and doing what he likes doing best — bullying. Well that and self-aggrandizing. And making money at the expense of others.

Cook could just say Fk it and pay the 25% (or additional 25%) indefinitely. It would take years for building a plant to satisfy Trump's whim. No, decades. And that's only if Trump doesn't raise the vig. Cook says Apple can live with 25% and makes no plans to build. Trump would be triggered and probably raise the tariff again if somebody doesn't keep him in check.

What's the answer or is there more than one? I have no idea. Even when he leaves office there will still be a huge mess to clean up and correct. There's no telling how much infamy will live on in the Red Party and celebrated as legacy. I think we're going to see Apple prices get somewhat painful though not impossible (ha!) for most to afford.

  • Save up to $450 on OWC Express 1M2 USB 4 external SSDs for Mac

You can buy the 4.0TB OWC Express 1M2 for $450 as advertised here.
Our you could buy the 4.0TB OWC Envoy Ultra for $500. This is Thunderbolt 5 drive for only $50 more.
If I were going to get 4TB, I'd definitely get the T-Bolt 5 enclosure for only $50 more. I'd prefer to get an empty Envoy Ultra and put my own SSDs in it. Maybe one day OWC with have Envoy Ultra empties on sale for $150.

Something else to be aware of:

    3. Does not mount if being connected as the third bus powered device with select Mac systems, including the Apple (M4) MacMini16,11 and Apple (M4 Max) Mac Studio.

  • Apple Watch sensors are so good, it could provide the first pregnancy indicators

Note to women living in Gilead (states controlled by republicans): don’t wear an Apple watch. Should you choose to terminate your pregnancy in a civilized state, your watch logs could be subpoenaed to prove you had an abortion.
There was a time when a post like this would have been just some nut job making a dumbass tortured statement to disparaged Apple tech.

Now it's a solid warning about an actual possibility that's not at all far fetched. I'm curious as to how accessible that data is. Does it or can it exist only on the Watch? If so, can it be deleted to an extent as to be unrecoverable? In Gilead there's no compunction against seizing and trawling someone's tech without a warrant.

  • Trump's new China trade deal is still bad for US business & consumers

    JamesCude said:
    It’s a great deal- if you’re a billionaire.
Yep. And it's billionaires saying "Just hang in there. Sure it will get worse, for you, but it will get better". Half truth half lie. Yes it will get worse for us, no it won't get better.

I see that Apple is treated very unfairly.
But Apple has been "friendly" in terms of their pricing policy.
I think Apple will not be heavily affected by raising prices.
It isn't just Apple that's being treated unfairly. It's pretty much anyone importing anything into the US. I'm curious to see if the "Trump Phone" ever ships and at what price compared to the current quoted prices, since it's NOT "Made in USA" as was originally stated. The walked that back quickly. It smells like vaporware, but I hope it's not and MAGAts everywhere buy it. Well except that it also means money in Trump's pocket.

What does But Apple has been "friendly" in terms of their pricing policy even mean? You think they're not going to pass on any cost increase to the customer?

"I think Apple will not be heavily affected by raising prices." Huh? You don't think Apple paying almost a $Billion more in tariffs in one quarter isn't heavily affected by rising prices/tariffs? Or do you mean Apple will not be heavily affected, because they'll be raising prices? Either Apple doesn't raise prices and eats the increase costs, they pass them on to customers, or a little of each. You and I have a different definition of "heavily affected'.

  • Oppo Find N5 foldable phone review: Apple's now on notice

    AppleZulu said:
That's a great review, but it failed to answer the biggest question: What is the use for this, beyond, "hey look, it folds"?
If you have to ask the question, it's not for you. How can people who obviously think they know tech, not see the advantage of a folding phone even if it's not for them? Seriously. I have no reason to own a pickup truck but I see the utility, even if I'll never need it. You don't have to be a visionary to see it. Or maybe you do.

"An iPad mini in your pocket" someone said. That makes perfect sense to me. Even if I have no reason to have an iPad mini with me. No doubt someone does.

"It's not an iPad mini, it's an Android tablet". Brilliant response. Utter fucking genius. Of course it's not an iPad mini. But it sets a high bar for for a folder. I have no need for a folder. Except when I'm out somewhere and want to actually read something online. Presbyopia isn't fun and Rx lenses only help so much with a phone. To be able to open phone and actual read something without having to scrollscrollscroll would be very nice.

I try watching the odd YT review video online from time to time, not fun for me. No way I'd watch a movie or TV on a phone, but I've seen a lot of people doing so. A folder might offer the viewing experience I can't get with a regular phone.

Pricey. Niche. Novelty. Blah.Blah.Blah. Yeah some will by a folder because it folds. Something like Noem fighting crime while wearing a Cosmograph Daytona. But others will benefit from having a folder for their viewing preferences. They'll have to endure the pejorative remarks from know it alls like the first AirPod customers.

In a couple of years when folders are a thing though not ubiquitous, current naysays will be sayin how they knew it was the next big thing. The N5 sets a high bar. I hope Apple answers the challenge.

  • iPhone Fold could be thinner than an iPad Pro when opened

The comments show a whole lot of uneducated speculation as fact for a product that hasn't shipped or even been announced yet, based on rumors of that unannounced rumored product specs.

There are ribbon cables that once had a comparatively limited flex life compared to today's cables. Technology marches on. Who's to say that Apple hasn't worked with someone to develop a screen that has hundreds of thousands of flexes without crease. Wait we've got an expert in that field right here who knows what Apple can and can't do.

A folding phone is a niche product. News flash: water is wet. Unless it's dehydrated Instant Water crystals. There are other manufacturers selling folding phones. They're niche products. Whodda thunk it. Apple make a niche product? Never. Well, there is the Apple Vision Pro. It's a thing. Pricy, heavy, still needs some work. But a very niche product. Apple is said to be working on other models. They will probably sell better than the AVP, but they'll still be a niche product. So Apple shipping a folding phone which could sell better than the AVP doesn't seem like a huge stretch.

It will be pricey. Some will own one to show off. Forum experts will spin that any say anyone who owns one is just showing off. But if someone can afford to buy one in the first place, maybe they might get on some new phone every year or two years plan. That's not me. Not for any phone at any price. I buy outright. But that's just one datapoint and use case. There are a lot of people who get a new phone every one or two years.

There are customers who will benefit from a phone with a screen smaller than an iPad mini and bigger than any non-folding phone to date. That would necessitate a folding phone. Some people lack the vision to see such a simple niche market.

Apple wouldn't have to make a folding screen that lasts forever without creasing. Just make it last one or two model years. Trade the phone in for a new one with a perfect screen. Done, till next time.

Only a fool takes a picture with an iPad? WTF, Einstein. You have an iPad, you see something you want to capture, you click. An iPad to be used primarily as a camera isn't the best choice for most people. But I don't doubt it is for some. Others, you shoot with what you got. Taking an iPad to venues to use as a camera does annoy me if it blocks my view.

Were you one of those who said all the people with AirPods will look like dorks? Because they had 'buds in their ears that didn't have a cord attached? Now no one gives it a second thought. Not that they should.

To that end we don't yet know how Apple will handle using the phone as a camera. They might have an 'external' screen visible with the phone closed. In that case a pic could be taken without ever opening the phone. Your fears of an iPad as camera world neatly averted. The same would go for checking date or time, texts and any other alerts, all without opening the phone. Or maybe not. Maybe they'll think anyone who can afford their folder will have a Watch for the light lifting. Who knows. Not anyone here.

The original iPhone was $499 and $599. Not cheap compared to some phones, and only that 'cheap' because ATT subsidized the cost to consumer. It was a niche product for a few years, though probably selling in greater numbers in its early years than a folding iPhone, if there is such a product.

All of this is speculation based on rumors. I won't be getting one but I'm excited to see Apple's take, you know, if they making a folder.

Who keeps asking Apple for an even thinner iPhone with worse battery life? I’ve never met anyone with those requirements.
Even thinner? They’ve been getting thicker with basically every new release for the past 11 years, and this is what keeps me from upgrading until I absolutely have to. Nobody wishes for worse battery life, of course, but I would love it if they could make something with the same thickness (6.9mm), weight (129g) and battery life as the iPhone 6 from 2014 (or in that ballpark) but with more modern specs. And maybe they should devote more resources to developing really great battery cases for people who don’t mind the bulk but need more battery life.
On behalf of all of those who want a phone to be functional and useful for a longer period of time versus being 2mm thinner, how is 2mm thinner with 25% less battery life an acceptable tradeoff to you?
Not that I'm a heavy user but I could never live with that. I have friends who have no worries every getting down to 20%-30% battery life and it's not the end of the day. None of them carry a charger aren't worried. It seems to work for them but I'd have Percentage Anxiety. Apple probably dropped the MagSafe Battery because non-mini MagSafe phones don't really need it for most users. Or Apple says they don't.

Apple didn't deliver the mini with the battery life I wanted. I compromised because the compact size was better than the other phones, even though it wasn't a 5S. With a car charger and a MagSafe battery on occasion, I can get through a 12 hour shift with no anxiety.

I've known a few business types, especially some women, how prefer or would prefer to keep the phone in an inside breast pocket but don't due to the weight, or do and lament the weight. I don't know how many customers like that there are and that they're enough to help sustain a model.

See, that's the thing, people say they want this or that, but then Apple offers it and they don't buy it.
No It's not. it's speculative bullshit. Tell me how many customers said they wanted a smaller phone and didn't buy it. How many? How many said that but didn't buy?

I can more accurately speculate that everyone or nearly everyone who wanted a smaller phone bought a mini. Because the minis sold. Wasn't enough in either case. It's possible that some people wanting a smaller phone weren't happy with what Apple delivered. It happens. That's not the same as your implication of "people say". That line is trotted out a lot and never with any substantiation other than Apple dropped the line. The sales weren't to Apple's liking. That doesn't support your "people say" premise at all.

Maybe @retrogusto will say why he didn't buy a mini. Maybe it was as you stated. Or maybe what Apple shipped wasn't he's dream phone for some other reason than size and weight.

And apropos of the subject matter of the book. It's not my idea of entertainment, so it's a pass for me. It looks to be one of those series that Apple does which often gets critical acclaim without much of viewers eyes. There's many people like seeing others misfortunes whether to commiserate or criticize. Even if I don't view the material, I like that Apple does allow projects like this.
