  • AT&T workforce stricken with over 2000 layoffs U.S-wide days after $1000 tax reform bonus ...

Why Americans allow CEO's to fire workers willy-nilly to make their short-term bottom line look better is beyond me.

Yep, lay them off and put them on the dole. Great.

In Germany, for example, BMW is not allowed to layoff and send them to the unemployment line for the government to pay. First, they have to go on 3/4 time, then half time, then 1/4 time and into a retraining program. Now that's how a responsible company should operate.

Case in point, Germany was the last country to go into the Great Recession of 2008 and the first to come out!

    Oh well.

  • Consumer Reports ranks iPhone X behind Galaxy S8 and iPhone 8 series in testing

CR is out of touch...always have been. I remember back in the day, they would rate various Windows laptops as better 'value' than Apple laptops.

That's when I cancelled my subscription.

CR is for the Costco crowd who buy Samsung TV's, Android cellphones and HP computers where if it's cheap, its has to be good value.

It's written by unimaginative former IT 'engineers' weened on Windows! Left up to them we'd still be using Motorola Razors, working on Windows Desktops. Ugh!  :)

  • Saudi journalist used Apple Watch to record own interrogation and execution, report says [...

Typical...not to sound too cynical...but as you look around the world, (all hemispheres), there are no real wars left.

    Except in the Middle East!

Yes, there are regional problems, as with the Royhinga in Myanmar, whatever is going on in the Philippines and, of course, Crimea/Ukraine.

Only the Middle East continues to be an area of the world that has not obliged itself of the success as have the emerging markets of India, Brazil, China, Africa, Vietnam, etc., etc.

E.g., China, a country of ~1.4 billion people has lifted half their population out of poverty and had ~10% growth in GDP (YOY) for the last 30 years...(Down to ~7% growth, currently, I think?)

Islam needs a Reformation. Similar to what happened to Christendom in the 16th century. (You know, where God told us to burn more Catholics b/c it was 'cold' outside!)  s/

Oh well, don't mean to sound like I know everything...

Saudi Arabia is not our friend! They're too concerned with fighting a 2,500 year old regional war with 'Persia' (i.e., Iran)

     :)

P.S. Why is 'Arabia' at war with 'Persia' you might ask? Yes, Arabia are Sunni Muslims, and Persia are Shia Muslims. But, one sect believes the caliphate should be a direct descendent of the Prophet Muhammad and one sect doesn't. Are you f'ing kidding me!  'Que so what, so what' or better yet, 'Inshallah.'

  • $29 battery exchanges for iPhone 6 and newer now available at most Apple retail locations

HI guys, I downloaded the App, 'Battery Life' (Free-No affiliation)....My SE is fine (Green) but my GF's iPhone 6 is average (Orange).

Also, my GF's had a message from Apple, Settings>Battery "Your iPhone battery may need to be serviced."

    Best.

Hmmm, I first notice how small it is in the hand, after several years with plus model. And to be honest, the notch on the top is not bothering me at all. It was a little bit strange in the beginning though, but it grows on me. Still, I am curious why they opt for this design as oppose to make the whole bar black.
Yeah, I think I read you can 'opt' to have that when looking at movie....so it looks like a black bar on that side. :)

  • Apple's 8 years of iPad: a revolution in iOS computing

What I liked about the first iPad was it forced companies to improve their websites and most importantly those companies that had web-based applications.

I was in real estate and to use the listing service (ARMLS) or the contract/document service, etc., I had to have a Windows PC -Ugh! (I used a good, but somewhat, slow Parallels emulation SW on my iMac.)

To update the e-Key I had to have a landline in 2006!  Sheesh!

Then along came the iPad on the heels of the iPhone and not only were the services more Mac friendly, but the iPad/iOS versions were a joy to use.

I think mainly, due to the fact that the apps/sw had to basically be built from scratch for iOS and b/c Apple provided the tools to build them to developers, the applications were closer to the Apple standard of elegance and ease of use. It forced the companies to 'raise their game' when it came to iOS!

That's what I remember most of the early iPad and hardly hear anyone mention it. It continues today, in that many tasks I do are easier on the iPad/iOS than on a Mac.

Great article -as usual, Daniel. :)

  • Apple's iPhone privacy ad campaign continues with new billboards

Apple is really onto something here.

I emailed all the App Developers of the few Third Party Apps I use both on my iOS devices and MacOS, TVOS. I asked them directly if they collect, distill and sell my personal information.

All of them assured me they don't. Some of them were quite offended even though in the first sentence I said, "please don't be offended..." :)

I listen to a few Apple podcasts, (mainly ones with Jason Snell), and it amazes me when, guests extoll the virtues of Android, Google, Google Docs, Chrome, etc. They just gloss over the privacy issue!

I know there maybe better Note apps, Messaging apps, Podcast apps, email apps, Pages-like apps, Numbers-like apps, Books apps, Calendar apps, Map apps, News apps, Music apps, Contacts apps, Photo apps, PDF Reader apps, Password generation apps, Online Backup apps, etc, etc., but I only trust Apple.

And that's why I only use their apps! :)

I've never been on FB, never been on Twitter, use DuckDuckGo as my browser,

Apple's iPhones collect on average 75 data points a day, Android (or as I call them 'Taliban' phones) collect 1,500 data points a day).

FB collects  29,000 data points on each of its users! (Source: Scott Galloway, Pivot Podcast - Really recommend it.)

  • Facebook fined $5B by FTC over Cambridge Analytica scandal charges

They need to add a 'Zero' to make it a 50B fine. Only way FB will change their awful ways!

FB has 40B in cash, they would have to borrow 10B. Stock would drop by 2/3's and so would Zuck's wealth.

If that happened, they would have all the problems fixed in 10 days!

Increased teen suicide, especially among you girls, visits by young girls to emergency rooms for 'cutting' up 70%. Russians buying ads, Cambridge, data breeches, Myanmar genocide, etc., etc.

FB is like the cigarette companies of the 90's.

  • Steve Jobs unveiled the first iPhone 17 years ago today

Love the article! Very well done! :)

I bought 2, Day-One! (Full price!) One for myself and on for my 17 year old daughter...

...I asked her how she liked the iPhone and she said, 'Dad, my whole life is in this phone!' Admittedly, is more charming a comment in 2007 than it is today. :)

I gave her my MacBook, and with her iPhone, I like to think they both got her thru Med School!

(Fortunately, she has her mother's brains and is now an Anesthesiologist, MD!) :)

I was in real estate and it was a game changer for me...the iPhone was the ultimate communication deviceI So much so, that I stopped carrying my original intel MacBook around with me.

Text was not that big back then...but the Visual voicemail, the access to email, contact management and access to PDF's was a game changer! I could answer 'contract,' 'counter offers,' and submission emails with, 'yep I have it, will get back to you, shortly!"

Arrive home, whenever I 'arrived' and handle the 'heavy lifting' on my 2006 original intel iMac at home.

No stress b/c the iPhone allowed me to send a quick response. I didn't have to rush home. Being stressed the whole time!

    Anyway, good times! :)

    Best.

I found nothing compelling about the X other than the color/build quality and OLED display.
The constant face scanning is actually a major turn-off and not something I want.
It's actually a lot faster and more convienent to click the home button while pulling the phone out of your pocket and straight to your ear, than bringing the phone to your forward looking face and swiping up before bringing to your ear.

I sense a growing divergence in what people will accept in regards to privacy.
I don't think the X will fail, but the face recognition will. For the same reason Oculus failed... it's a step too far in loss of privacy.

The 8 will blow the X out of the water in sales for this reason alone.
Yep, you're right. Having the best designed device in the history of man, is not for everyone. :)
