  • Apple debuts colorful 24-inch iMac with M1, upgraded camera and audio

I love everything about it except....once again, Apple is being so stingy with the storage.  256GB for a desktop computer is almost insulting.  For $1300, 512GB should have been the minimum and I wish I didn't keep having this complaint every time there's a big refresh in the Mac product line.  A disappointing skimp on what looks like a really nice update.

I too wish the chin was totally gone, but I suppose we just aren't there yet.

  • Actually, there is something new about Apple's upcoming iPhone 7

Thanks for pointing me to Joanna Stern's article on iPhone and AI in WSJ. I think she's spot on. The position of Apple on privacy is not a desirable one. If I look at my Android friends that are amazed by the AI delivered to their phone by Google & friends that analyse their data, I can't help but wonder how Apple will ever deliver something similar?
Nobody seems to care that Apple protects their privacy (it's a multinational too!) and Google not. They just want useful information delivered to them when they need it.

I know a ton of people who care about privacy, especially the more they find out about how much they've given away to Google and Facebook.  So they adjust and change privacy settings to minimize the future damage, or they migrate away from those services.  I know it's one of the big reasons I don't ever foresee jumping to Android for me.  There is nothing so groundbreaking in Android or the hardware their various OEMs come out with that makes me want to wade into that privacy abyss.

That entry level one is what I'd expect for education and to be priced at $1099 or maybe $999.  The $1299 one should not only have the 2 USB 3 ports and gigabit Ethernet, but 512GB of storage.  The $1499 one should have 16GB of RAM and 512GB and the $1699 one should have 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

Sorry, but this is just ridiculous.

  • Epic Games wanted a special deal for 'Fortnite' on the App Store

I'm sorry but if you willingly pay the 30% fee to Xbox and Playstation to be on their consoles, you can hardly bitch about Apple doing the same on their App Store and platform.

  • Lawsuit bemoans iPhone XR's 'inferior,' 'defective' 2x2 MIMO antennas

2x2 MIMO antennas were in iPhones up through the X and iPhone 8/8 Plus series.  It's not a defective design, it's just not the latest/greatest technology which at the time of release for the XR, XS and XS Max was the 4x4 MIMO.

There's no evidence Apple misrepresented this antenna in the XR or hid that spec from anyone.  I'm confused as to why people would think a phone that is obviously a step down from the flagship models of that year (see LCD screen instead of OLED, single lens camera, etc) should have top of the line specs.

Ok, also, this section highlighted below is some bullshit:

Seriously Apple?  You take away Gigabit Ethernet, only give two Thunderbolt/USB4 ports, and no Touch ID on the keyboard?  These are the sorts of compromises you'd expect on the el cheapo version built for K-12, not for a consumer desktop.

Looks like it will be a while before I consider trading in the 27".

  • EU may require Apple to give competitors access to Apple Pay tech

I've never really understood this line of thought.  Someone else builds a payment concept into their hardware and you're owed access to it simply for existing and wanting it?  Don't most of these card companies embed an NFC chip into our cards already?

  • U.S. House questions Apple over FaceTime flaw

Are these imbeciles for real?  The existence of Google and Facebook alone should negate all this false concern.  Good Lord.

Far from nonsensical.  The issue is, the $1299 price point didn't used to be the crippled K-12 version.  A version like that was in the $1000 range.  When you got to 1300 bucks it didn't have goofy trade offs like only two USB ports and no ethernet jack.  Hell, even the base Mac mini has a damn ethernet jack, 2 USB ports in addition to the 2 Thunderbolt ones, and even an HDMI.  So it's perfectly reasonable to question the specs for the price on this new iMac.
I don't know what country you live in but in the western world things have been getting more expensive over time for the past 40 years.  And it's accelerated in our COVID blessed world thanks to the now blindingly obvious gross, continued overreaction to the China virus.  The base mini lacks a screen, speakers, bundled keyboard/mouse, etc. so it's hardly an equal comparison.

Speaking of costs raising over time - I was unwrapping some stuff wrapped in newspapers from the mid 70's and cars costing $30K plus today were around $1500 then.  Thank decades of successful central planning for this "feature".
And I pointed out in the very next post that the M1 Mac Mini with the same exact specs on RAM and SSD storage can be paired with a nice 24" 4k LG monitor, Apple keyboard and mouse and still come out $150 less.  Add in webcam and speakers and you're still at or under $1299 and you have the versatility of more ports (including HDMI) and the ability to upgrade the screen to 5k or a larger size later.  I don't think inflation on the Mac line jumped 20% from the release of the M1 Mac Mini til now.
The mini is in same old enclosure as the Intel
model. The display is 4.5K, not 4K. It’s got a new logic board, cooling system, and audio designs. You can’t pretend like these aren’t factors.

Which while it may justify a price increase, does not justify an increase while removing 4 ports, the SD slot, and ethernet.
Because you’re making up component costs in your head to calculate the value of the product. As has been discussed many times over, the sum of component costs has nothing to do with development and manufacturing costs. You have no idea how they calculated these choices, and are making yourself angry over an imaginary metric that you concocted on your own. That
    seems unproductive.
The bottom line for the end user is value for the money paid.  I think if you told a person - hey, we couldn't stay at the $1099 iMac price point from last year but it's a new design with the better processor and a bigger screen, then while I'm not thrilled that the entry point is 20% higher, I can handle that.  But when you do that but also give me a paltry 2 USB ports, and remove the ethernet jack and other ports then I'm starting to feel nickeled and dimed and it's actually affecting the functionality of the computer.

  • Apple's extortionate upgrade prices can't stop the MacBook Air being a bargain

For the overwhelming majority of MacBook Air customers, 16GB of RAM is plenty.  And so is 256GB of SSD storage.  That machine will scream at virtually anything a normal user throws at it.

My issue is, as the article states, the extortionate upgrade prices.  You make the machines nearly, if not entirely, impossible to upgrade after purchase, but charge $200 extra per upgrade tier for additional SSD or RAM.  The upgrade tiers should be $100 more.  That's reasonable.  $400 to go to 32GB of RAM is insane.  $400 to go to 1TB of storage is likewise insane.
