  • San Bernardino shooter's iPhone may hold evidence of 'dormant cyber pathogen,' DA says

Yes, because an iPhone that likely has (or had) only limited access to the company network is the ideal way to get a "cyber pathogen" into the county's infrastructure. Apparently they think that's easier than the guy just walking into the office and plugging an infected thumb drive into someone's PC?

Are they saying it might be "dormant" to give a sense of urgency that it could wake up and attack at any moment? If that's what they're worried about, shouldn't they just pull the SIM and kep it off the wifi?

They're counting on the fear and stupidity of the public and the courts to believe this nonsense.

  • Apple's iPhone SE 4 rumored to launch early in 2025

Apple might be following the old advertising motto "We will sell no wine before its time." Maybe they're not happy with the performance, reliability, and security of their (experimental) under-screen fingerprint sensors. Or maybe it just doesn't suit their marketing plans.

But yes, I'd certainly find it acceptable if Apple came out with a phone with that as a feature and it was as good as the one on my 3rd Gen SE. I'm just saying I like having to take a purposeful physical action to unlock my phone or authorize a purchase. (Yes I'm aware I can disable it all and just use a password, but who wants to do that?)

  • Apple's Touch ID is probably never coming back to iPhone

I hope they don’t eliminate Touch ID completely.

I have continued to buy iPhone 8 and SE models over the past several years specifically because they have Touch ID. With Touch ID there is zero danger someone can take my phone and hold it up to my face to unlock it before I realize what they’re up to.

For me, the  added security of having to perform a purposeful action - touching the unlock button with specific fingers - makes up for the inconvenience when wearing gloves, etc.

It’s nice to have that choice available.

  • What to expect from Apple 'AirTags' tracking accessory in fall 2020

I love my Tile Mate locators, and they’re less expensive than the article says - well under $20 each in a set of four, and there are other discounts available. Their batteries are replaceable and can be used to locate your phone from your keys as well as the other way around. My Tiles have saved my bacon scores of times. I’ve never used them to locate a truly lost item, but I lose my keys and phone in the house all the time.

The biggest advantage the future Apple devices will have is that the crowdsourced locating capability apparently won’t require a specific app to be installed like Tile does. I’m guessing that anyone with the latest OS becomes a “finding assistant” for a tag marked as lost. If that’s the case, I’ll probably have a mixture of Apple tags and my existing Tiles.

Or... Could/will Apple open up the API and location system to third-party tags like Tile?
