My roommate ran into this with his SmartDisk Firelite 30 GB. His OS X iBook wouldn't read it, nor could my TiBook in OS X. But when I rebooted into OS 9.2, it read fine, and afterwards it did in OS X too. Weird, but at least we didn't lose any data.

I'll try when I get home with my 9.2 and X 10.2 discs, but OS 9 isn't reading CDs either, so I fear it's not a problem with login priveleges, but rather a hardware issue. Thanks, will repost after I try.

I don't know on homemade VCDs, but at least on commercial VCDs (which should be the same as homemade): The movie file is the .DAT file in the MPEGAV folder, which you can open with Quicktime. AFAIK, though, you can't read this file in OS X, only …

Got it working! Posting this in X.2 Went to the Apple Support site. Apparently it's a "rare" problem, so lucky me... Just had to download the half-MB Mac OS X Modem Update, run it, restart, and my modem is singing again.
