It sounds like you are using the iTunes app. For your music you want to use the Music app (it might be labeled as iPod) and for video you want to use the Video app. As you fond out the iTunes app is for accessing the iTunes Store.

Are you saying yes when iTunes asks to allow incoming access? This behavior started awhile back (pre iTunes 10) and is still with us. i say yes all the time and do not have a problem with the Apple TV.
