When it was said that a PPC 970 would out-perform a G4 by double on the same clock speeed, was that a 64-bit optimised application, or 32-bit application?
-
Honestly, I hate to say it, but the 3 ghz would be faster than the 64-bit because most likely nothing but the iAps and OS X would be optimised for it, but the 32-bit one has AltiVec too. So it's basically just from a marketing stand point, which is…

But couldn't they acquire the one Dell uses without Dell knowing. Buy it through other accounts and other companies appoint some CEO that has no connection with Apple and run some sort of puppet scheme.

You're not getting it. We're not buying everyone of them and making a monopoly. We're just buying one so that we don't have to spend even more on R&D to make Macs have the best hardware. We need a starting point. We also get the added pr…

That's why Apple's company would stay in business. They would be producing for Apple, and many other computer manufacturers so with mass-production prices stay low, and they would have the most advanced hardware. Of course the pc companies woul…

Oh, so a higher performance version of the current 32-bit PPC could be used in a workstation with some modifying to the OS. Most workstations won't need more than 64 GB except databases and servers, etc. Edit: Also, besides more RAM capabilities w…

Okay, thanks. Also, I was wondering what advantages 64-bit has over 32-bit in the high end workstation area. What besides being able to handle more RAM?

I don't think apple could buy Adobe though...4.8 billion market cap...How much would ATI cost to buy? Apple could also buy AMD but that's just a little too much for Apple too handle I think
-
Also, nVidia's market cap is 1.4 billion...apple has 4 billion cash, so it could be possible.
-
Just possibilites you think would make sense and be a good idea...most likely none will come true though. How much would Maya or ATI cost, I couldn't find a market cap on either. I think SGI owns A|W though so would Maya be included in buying SGI?

In the Mac Warehouse, take a look at the powerbook page and read the last paragraph. AFAIK, the powerbook does not have SuperDrive yet.

Yeah, I didn't mean with cash, I mean wich company is bigger and who could buy who? Could Intel buy Microsoft, or the other way around?
-
So basically, switch MS and IBM. I thought Disney had way mroe money. So Adobe could buy Apple, not Apple buy Adobe? I was just basically looking to see what the biggest companies are out there.

*bump.

I don't think Apple could actually make the mb...they might design it but i doubt they actually do the fab...maybe some other eastern fab but i dont think apple has their own fab.
-
Is there any place where I could find out about how much each component costs them? How much does a G4 1 GHz cost? How much is the motherboard? How much does the superdrive cost? BTW, who makes the superdrive for apple?
-
That is weird...like the same exact concept we discussed here just a month or so ago. Bill Gates reads our boards???

What about companies, like Adobe, who just spent all this time optimizing for OS X and for G4 and altivec, are they going to want to come back again and optimize for 64-bits now? What if Apple made a uber-pro line with the 64-bit chip, then bough…

Too early. Most havnt even started shipping yet. Also, giving them just as much processing power as the towers would be a bad move.

LOL, but seriously...
