well, mount_afp will let you mount with a -nobrowse flag, so you won't get a desktop icon. I'm sure there'll be a similar flag in whatever API your using.

tap the down arrow to highlight a listed user, then press alt-return. You'll get the standard dialog box.

Dear God no! You won't see an intel eMac. Apple have been trying to kill them for months, but education don't see anything in the range as a direct replacement. No-one in education wants a Mini, and the current iMacs are just a bit too costly com…

You may want to look at how you're installing those LoginHooks, lundy. You've left the permissions on the scripts themselves as 775, and you've written the loginwindow defaults into /Library/Preferences, which is also root:admin 775. Both of these…

You'll need to boot into OS 9 to run the 4.19 update, from a writeable volume (ie not just from CD). You couldn't have mis-applied the wrong one, 4.17 is just the version that shipped on your iMac. If you attempt to upgrade to Panther or above with…

you could copy the tree with a command line tool that won't touch resource forks - this would let you test all was good before deleting the originals, too! ditto --norsrc, or rsync without the -E switch should do it.

One thing that happens on login is that the Finder attempts to resolve the IP address of idisk.mac.com. This really bogs down logins that cannot do this, not 10 minutes but perhaps 20-30 seconds. If i have to set up a lab with no no external networ…

OK ,so we're downing the dregs of our second bottle of red, so my comment was perhaps a trifle less coherent than i imagined. But, I spend much of my working life deploying Mac OS X into large AD environments, and i think that the Thursby SMB and A…

Thursby, Thursby, Thursby, Thursby, Thursby, Thursby, Thursby, Thursby. I like Thursby.

I know what you want, and you can of course do it with X11 programs already, but i don't see it being available for Quartz apps any time soon. I would love to offer cross-platform remote display to thin clients from an Xserve farm, since many of my…

Yes, it will keep data that has been deleted from the source until you do a recycle backup.

Except that those BigDisks are RAID 0, so you've gone from a solution that gave you the ability to survive a drive failure without downtime, to one that takes your entire backup down. A simple array of separate drives, or a JBOD would probably have…

nope, RAID 0 or 1 only. How cheap do you need it to be?

Well, you can play with /etc/fstab and mount the volume wherever you like. I used to mount a partition at /Applications, so that i could reinstall the os without touching the apps - pointless really, but i thought it was cool at the time.

Just to throw some fuel on the fire, I set up one of the new single -processor 1.8 G5s today, and it had the revised smaller logic board inside - as seen a few months ago in those pics from the Service Source manuals. There is a good 4 inch gap fro…
